Hello West Potomac Community, I hope and pray that all Wolverines are safe and staying healthy. We are in one of the most trying times in modern history. I appreciate all of you and your patience as we navigate these uncharted and unprecedented waters. I know that some of you may have been frustrated by the pace at which the school system has determine plans and next steps, however, I am also sure that you understand the depths and breath of this work. Now we are going into the third week of closure and are able to begin the distance learning plan. It is my goal with this presentation, to give you an overview of the plan, timelines, and expectations. I would like to preface all this with the fact that this work is new and it will not be perfect. It will evolve over time and we have to be patient and give grace to our students, faculty and ourselves.

So, with that in mind, think about one thing that you’ve been grateful for over these past two weeks. I have found myself waking up every morning being grateful for many things, like my immediate and extended families being safe and healthy, the fact that I have a home, food, health care and an income. Things that I admit I have taken for granted and that I am keenly aware many others in my community can not take for granted.

A learning experience where teachers and students are separated by place. They communicate asynchronously through printed or electronic media and/or through technology that allows them to communicate synchronously. Synchronous learning where the teacher will be providing ongoing instruction of essential skills and knowledge within the content. Blackboard Collaborate Ultra will be used to accomplish this-it is teacher directed. Asynchronous learning will also have virtual office hours for students to work independently or in groups utilizing Google Classroom-it is student directed.

This week teachers will reconnect with their students, update grades in SIS, update google classroom and blackboard and identify work to improve grades for 3rd quarter and attend professional development sessions. Students will have the opportunity to finalize their work prior to 3/13 until April 24th at which time the gradebooks will be closed for 3rd qtr. Grading. Up until this point, VDOE has provided expectations for no new graded work.

With the guidance of VDOE, FCPS has established a virtual bell schedule for high school. This is the schedule for West Potomac. It may look slightly different from other schools but the basic bell schedule, daily student expectations and times are the same. We are adding an optional Wellness Block during our 3rd period advisory. We are planning to use that time for support programs from student services, college and career, library, activities, SGA, and our health and wellness professionals. We will develop a schedule of what students could choose to take part. This will also develop weekly for students. We are also hoping to offer “after school” activities such as Club meetings and athletics. Students are expected to have approx. 45-60 min of virtual teacher directed learning per class per day. They are also expected to to work 45-60 min per student directed/choice learning per class per day.

This is the Wednesday/Thursday office hour schedule for West Potomac. During this asynchronous time, teachers will be available via BBCU to answer questions, provide individualized learning opportunities. This is student directed and student choice. Each content team will be responsible for making sure a content area teacher is available to support students within these time blocks. Think of this as “late bus” time. It is not a time for new synchronous instruction, it is a time for help and reteaching as a student determines their needs.

Politica de Notas para (MS & HS) • Cerrar los grados del tercer trimestre a partir del 3/13 ( los estudiantes con la

oportunidad de realizar trabajos de recuperación) y asignar un tercer grado

• Asigne una "no calificación" para el cuarto trimestre, pero permita que el trabajo de los estudiantes en el cuarto trimestre influya positivamente en sus calificaciones finales en función de las tendencias en el dominio del aprendizaje

• Nota: Solo las calificaciones finales se muestran en las transcripciones; una "sin marca" no se mostrará en la transcripción final de un estudiante

As guided by the state and approved by the FCPS school board late on Friday, FCPS has developed an overall grading policy. More detailed information as to the calulation of grades and accountability for attendance and 4th quarter will follow at some point this week. I will provide all updated information as I receive it. The main focus here is that all students will have an opportunity to close out 3rd quarter and improve their grade. 4th quarter on student report cards will reflect a “no mark NM” which will NOT reflect on their transcript and GPA. This came as direct guidance from VDOE. However, 4th quarter learning will positively influence the final transcript, GPA marks based on student demonstrated trends in mastery of essential learning objectives.

El DLP entra en vigencia con la capacitación y preparación del personal, la distribución de tecnología y los controles informales de los maestros con los estudiantes.

Semana de Marzo 30

Las familias de estudiantes en PreK-8 pueden esperar recibir su primer paquete de instrucción, con un enfoque esta semana en la revisión del contenido enseñado previamente. La capacitación y preparación del personal, la distribución de recursos tecnológicos y los registros informales de maestros también continuarán esta semana.

Semana del 6 de Abril

VacacionesPrimavera

Si bien no se lanzarán nuevos componentes del DLP durante las vacaciones de primavera, las familias de los estudiantes de PreK-8 pueden esperar recibir su paquete de instrucción para la semana siguiente el viernes o el sábado, a medida que el descanso llega a su fin

Semana del 13 de Abril

Los maestros y el personal de la escuela tendrán un último día de preparación y capacitación el lunes, luego la instrucción directa se lanzará el martes para los estudiantes de PreK-12. Los estudiantes en todos los niveles de grado tendrán registros con los maestros, participarán en el aprendizaje virtual directo y participarán en las tareas de instrucción. Los paquetes de instrucción para estudiantes en PreK-8 complementarán la instrucción directa de los maestros.

Although it doesn’t surprise me, it continues to overwhelm me how caring our community is. How we all rise up in times of difficulty and how we are so strong and resilient.
