Three singers. Three songwriters. One voice . . . “For the past seven years,
a trio of Dunedin women have practised a seductive sonic art. Augmenting
honey-dipped harmonies with acoustic guitars, ukulele, trumpet and
drums, they’ve conjured many a mood-altering spell…with a repertoire of
original compositions that reflect a shared talent for finding the
remarkable in the everyday, the trio appear to revel in the pleasure of
performance.” Jeff Harford, Otago Daily Times 3/11/07

CHRISTMAS HOUSE AND GARDEN TOUR Outram Charitable Trust News
Despite the drizzling weather the Christmas
House and Garden Tour was a great success!
The Outram Charitable Trust organised this
community event, which made a profit of
approximately $1,700.
The evening began at the Presbyterian
Church which was packed to the rafters!
The children from the Sunday school put on
a lovely nativity play and the school choir
came along and put in an outstanding
performance for the enjoyment of the
congregation.
The first of the gardens on the tour was
Seguier (pronounced sek-oy-a), well known
in gardening circles as a must to visit during
spring and early summer. Brollies aloft;
people meandered around the grounds,
glass of summer punch in hand, or simply
sheltered under a tree with some cheese
and crackers whilst listening to the talented
Esme playing the keyboard.
The beautiful garden of John and Daphne
MacFarlane in Railway Lane was the other
garden stop and there were lots of
wonderful nooks and crannies here to be
explored.
The McSkimmings' in Bidston Street
showcased a sophisticated dining room
setting with crisp, clean linen and sparkling
crystal. Their cutting edge kitchen was host
to Jan Lane who demonstrated the latest
'Chefs Tool Box' equipment.
The McAlwee's lounge was a veritable Elves'
Workshop bursting at the seams with
delightful Christmas Characters and Cuddly
Cuties. Dressed as Christmas fairies the
McAlwee girls managed to delight their
visitors.
The Grace family opened their home to
share a traditional 'Parlour Christmas'.
David Young played the piano while
accompanied by Andy Grace on the guitar,
with lots of singing along by visitors!
The Grand Finale was the Christmas House
opposite the park where all our groups
reconvened to share a glass of mulled wine.
Some of us even got a chance to sit on
Santa's knee! For those of you who have
never seen the Campbell's house at
Christmas it is transformed into a magical,
sparkling wonderland at this time of year.
All in all the
evening was
a wonderful
way to get
into the
Christmas
Spirit.
A big thank you is extended to the guides, the church and everyone who was involved or supported the evening.

The members of the Outram Volunteer Fire Brigade hope you all had a safe and enjoyable festive season.
It has been a quiet holiday period for the Brigade, which is good news, and shows that people are being
sensible about the lighting of fires, driving etc.
Monday night training has restarted after a few weeks off for the holiday break
(only the training has been on a break and the Brigade has still been operational). This year, we will be undertaking training in new equipment and working on keeping our abilities up to scratch in the traditional fire fighting skills.
Outside of the operational side, the brigade has managed to purchase the original Outram Fire Appliance, a rare Forward Control Landrover, and will be restoring this over time. If anyone has any photos, information, or is willing to assist then they can get in touch with the secretary, Craig Connor, on 486 1446.

TAIERI LIONS SERVICE CLUB
The Lions Club has been quite busy over the last couple
of months. A good number were engaged in assisting
with the Food Bank Drive and also in providing the BBQ
and generally helping at the annual IHC picnic. There has
been gate keeping duties at the races and the A&P Show.
It has been decided that the Club will "Do the Rail Trail" in April so members
are busy training for this event.

PONY CLUB ENJOY SUCCESS AT CHAMPS West Taieri Pony Club
Over the Christmas break many riders have
been out competing or attending training
courses.
Recently we had two teams competing at
the South Island Pony Clubs Show Jumping
Champs in Mosgiel. Our 'white' team got
third place. Our riders also won the
"Horsemastership" trophy.
In order to win this the teams must display
a high level of horse welfare and care both
on and off their horses, have a tidy
'campsite' and do everything correctly and
safely- the pony club way!
We were very proud of our riders for
winning this trophy.
Pony club will be starting back on 11
February and will continue with Thursday
evening rallies until daylight savings ends.
New riders are still more than welcome to
come along and see if pony club is for them.
We have a busy season ahead of us with
events to help organise, and visits to the
Hunt Club farm and our cross country
course at Woodside. We will be opening up
our Woodside cross country course to the
public on Anzac Day afternoon.
Anyone interested in helping to coach at pony club would be more than welcome, along
with any new members up to the age of 21 years.
Please contact our Secretary, Michelle Kerr 486 2743.

OUTRAM SCHOOL NEWS
Greetings for the new year from Outram School.
Welcome back to the new school year for families who have been with us before and we look forward to meeting our new families and those who will be joining us for the first time this year. We have a lot of exciting things planned already and no doubt 2010 will be the usual action-packed year for Outram School.
We are beginning the year with just over 230 children. There are only a small number of 5 year olds coming in over the first two terms but the second half of the year will see our usual numbers joining us. If you have children who will be starting at our school this year it is very helpful for our planning if you can let us know and get children enrolled as early as possible. We work hard to have classes as small as possible but this is difficult to plan for if children arrive we don't know about. You may not be aware that Outram School has an enrolment scheme in place and you have to live inside a specific geographic area to be able to send your children to our school. If you are a new family we have to ask for 'proof of residential address' because of this. We do not take any children from outside our zone because with our growing roll we are generating more and more teaching space and teacher time and do not have 'surplus capacity' for any children from outside our zone. The school website has more information about enrolment procedures.
We have two new teachers this year, with Angie Young and Mark Hunter both teaching in the Senior part of our school. Mark is also our Sport Director. We would like to extend a warm welcome to both of them!
We have our Twilight Mardi Gras coming up on the 20th February. This promises to be a fabulous community and school event. The organising group is putting in a tremendous amount of work getting all the different activities and stalls organised and this is certainly a day to mark in your diary. Again you can find out more information from the link on the school website - www.outram.school.nz. See you all there!!
Our website also has increasing amounts of information about school and class happenings. We will be working hard to put as much information as possible on the website this year so it is readily accessible for families at any time. There will also be information about how you can be involved in different school programmes. We are always looking for family and community members who have the time to support our classroom and other programmes. Please contact the Office and let us know the kind of thing/s you would like to be involved in - reading with children, preparing resources, sports coaching, sharing other skills you may have, etc.
Have a wonderful beginning to the school year.

Principal.

REFUNDS Changing your mind by Dunedin Citizens Advice Bureau
You don’t actually have the right to return goods for a refund if you just changed your mind and decide you don’t want them.
A shop doesn’t have to give a refund if:
You decide you don’t want the goods.
You find the same thing cheaper else-where.
You bought something for someone else that they don’t like or already have.
You bought clothes that don’t fit.
You bought something that doesn’t match what you already have.
But they do have to give a refund if they told you that you could get one.
Some shops have a ‘change of mind’ return policy. The terms of these return policies are decided by the shop owner.
The Outram Church Hall hosts Saturday Morning Ballet classes for three to seven year old girls and boys (or thereabouts). The classes offer an introduction to Ballet and Dance and the opportunity for your wee one to feel like a true dancer without even having to leave Outram. Dance teacher Emily, will be starting classes again this term on Saturday 20th February. She will run two classes, one at ten o'clock for the younger age group with the older ones starting at eleven o'clock. Contact Emily for more details on 027 464 8638.

Come to our Twilight Mardi Gras! We have an exciting time all organised and ready to go. Check out what we have to offer. You won’t want to miss this.
As you enter the fair, you will be greeted by our town criers, jugglers and stilt walkers who will hand you a map of everything that is happening and where it is located. We have an amazing assortment of quality but cheap, second hand goods on offer at our Retro Alley. There will be clothes, shoes, jewellery, children’s toys, nic-nacs, books, records, magazines etc that we have been able to gather up over many months. Worth a look to check out any cool bargains – you never know what treasure you may find. We are charging as little as a $1 for these items as we want them to go, so make sure you get in early! A feature in the Retro Alley is the craft stall where stunning button brooches, hair elastics and clips have been made by our school children and parents. See them and you are going to want to buy them.
There is absolutely heaps to do. We will have a farmyard corner with animals to pet and admire. There is even the opportunity to milk a cow. We have a Treasure Island for digging up treasure, a Fairies Grotto for little girls where they can get their nails painted, hair done, face painted, make wands, eat fairy cupcakes and sip fairy juice, bouncy castles,
mini motorcars, pony and carriage rides, Mystery Jars, Lucky Dip, Astro Ball, Bat-A-Bug (test your reflexes), Coconut Shy, Glow Stick stall which will be perfect for the night time
activities and Pippity Pop who concocts absolutely gorgeous balloons into amazing shapes. Keep an eye out for our school children who will be juggling and stilt walking during the Mardi Gras. We even have stilts and juggling balls for sale!
And then there is your usual fun fair events such as a Chocolate Wheel, Gumboot Throw, Guess-the-weight of the Sheep, even a Fortune Teller for those brave enough. Feeling
adventurous? Try the 3 sided rock climbing wall or our crazy mini golf course. We have a professional photographer who will be taking photos in a silly setting printed on the spot! Ladies feel like pampering? Then check out the Starlight Salon for a retreat from the crowds to be pampered and coiffed by professionals. It’s handy the dessert stall and Wobbly Goat Coffee stall are very close by…
We have “Finer Things”, a mini gourmet Farmers Market featuring Central Otago wines, liqueurs, Central Otago oils, relishes, chutneys, tasty seed condiments, venison salami’s, and the Chefs Toolbox where they will demonstrate their gourmet cookware in a marquee. Our Silent Auction is shaping up to have some very good items on offer. We have been donated a signed work by cartoonist Garrick

FAMILY CAROLS IN THE PARK Outram Plunket News
The inaugural Outram Christmas Carols

before Maria Lane entertained everyone
with a medley of Christmas songs-at times
being joined by children and adults.
Approximately $500 was raised on the
night which goes towards the operating
costs of Outram Plunket.
We look forward to seeing you all again
this year!
Many thanks must go to the following people for their contributions that made the night such a success…

Southland Provincial Districts.” It was originally published in 1905. See the full

OUTRAM HISTORY
Outram, 1905
Outram is a country town in the Taieri
Plain, and is connected by a branch
railway with Mosgiel, distant nine miles.
It has a population of 500 souls, two
churches, a state school, post and
telegraph offices, two banks, two hotels,
two accommodation houses, and is the
centre of an agricultural district, which
contains some of the best land in Otago.
The township is governed by a Town
Board, which first took office in 1882.
A disastrous flood occurred at Outram in
1868, causing great destruction to
property and the loss of a young settler's
life. Many houses were undermined, and
others were washed away, including the
courthouse, and parts of the constable's
residence. At the time of the Dunstan
“rush,” the armed escort had quarters at
Outram.
Formerly the streets were lighted with
kerosene, which has been superseded by
electric light. The water supply is
obtained by filterage from the Taieri river,
14 West of the Taieri Newsletter
the reservoir (an elevated iron
tank of 4000 gallons, which
supplies the town) being filled
with the aid of steam power
from the filterage well. Outram
is one of the finest and
healthiest places in New
Zealand, and is a favourite
resort for excursionists from
Dunedin. The roads are good
and fit for cycling. There are
several endowments, one of
eighteen acres, used as a
domain and place of resort for
excursionists and another of 375 acres
along the river Taieri. There is also a
recreation ground of about six acres
planted with macrocarpa trees for shelter
and with a well laid cycle track.
Outram Town Board . The first chair-man
of this board was Mr. Donald Borrie, and
the present chairman is Mr. William
Snow, who has filled the position since
1883. Messrs A. Chisholm, P. K. Low, G.
Rutherford and T. A. White are the other
members; Mr. John Grant, clerk. The total
rateable value of properties in the town
amounts to £36,000, the annual income is
about £228, and the expenditure £185.
The board is free from debt. The township
is supplied with electric light, and with a
good supply of pure water from a small
burn or creek called the Whare Creek. The
cost of the work was paid out of the fees
obtained from licensing the sale of
whisky, etc.
