A very warm welcome to yeast2003!

The ”International Yeast Conferences” started in the 1960s with a handful of delegates and since then have become THE most important event in yeast research. Nowadays, up to 1,000 delegates present about 600 lectures and posters. Recent superb conferences have taken place in Prague (2001), Rimini (1999), Stellenbosch (1997), Lisbon (1995), Vienna (1992), The Hague (1990), Helsinki (1988)…. This time the conference returns to Scandinavia, where yeast genetics once began at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen.

We extend a very warm welcome to all those interested in yeasts to attend yeast2003 in Göteborg. We, the group leaders, post-docs, and students at the Göteborg Yeast Centre and the Nordic Yeast Research Community resolved to do our utmost to make yeast2003 a truly memorable event with respect to the scientific programme, the venue, and everything that happens around the actual event. The conference might even be the starting point for an adventure-filled vacation in Scandinavia!

The Life Sciences are changing and yeast research is at their forefront. In the days of genomics, functional genomics, and systems biology, in particular yeast researchers are experiencing exciting and challenging times. For instance, with advancements in genome sequencing of yeasts and fungi, yeasts just now have become model systems for genome evolution and there have been stunning findings and exciting developments. More than ever, yeasts are recognised as excellent model systems in cell and molecular biology and as outstanding tools in advancing our understanding of how a living cell functions. If we happen to reach some ”complete” understanding of a living cell in the foreseeable future, bet that it will be a yeast cell!

Yeasts are also the most important microorganisms in biotechnology. New applications that make use of the power and flexibility of the yeast cell factory are constantly being developed. Along with traditional applications such as in baking, wine making, and brewing, modern uses of yeast such as in protein production are now being improved using the tools of functional genomics. Yeast is even used in drug screening. Never before have industrial and basic yeast research interacted so closely. Simply, exciting times…

One of the most important reasons for the enormous success of yeast research lies in the unique character of the international yeast research community. No other community employs such a free exchange and access to information and research tools. Nor has any other community had the ability to build - even intercontinental - consortia of critical mass to tackle large-scale projects, such as in genome sequencing or the comprehensive yeast knockout library. Yeast2003 is the meeting of the international yeast research community where the latest, and even unpublished results are exchanged, and new projects, alliances, and collaborations are founded. A do-not-miss-event.

We attempt to incorporate the present excitement in yeast research in the programme of yeast2003. We are confident that this conference will contain important news and information for all yeast researchers. In particular, we are making efforts to create an exciting, lively, and interactive event. For instance, read about the speaker’s corner, the microscopy as well as the genomics and bioinformatics arenas, the revised workshop format, and the theme on ”Model systems studied by yeast researchers”! For further developments, check out the website at www.yeast2003.se.

Taken together, yeast2003 will provide an up-to-date overview in yeast research and it will set the scene for years to come. After all, it is one of the most affordable international conferences of such as size and reputation!

This second (and final) announcement provides all the information you need to register, book accommodations, travel to Sweden and information for the submission of your abstract. If you still have questions, contact us at [email protected] and bookmark the website at www.yeast2003.se.

We really look forward to seeing/hosting you in Göteborg summer 2003. Welcome!

On behalf of the organising committee,

Stefan Hohmann Kerstin Stråby

Abstracts

All presentations at the conference - lectures, short oral presentations, and posters - must be accompanied by an abstract.

The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) at Stanford University will process abstracts. When submitting an abstract through the conference website, it will be sent to SGD automatically and you will receive an Abstract Submission Number. This number must be indicated on the registration form of the presenting author.

Abstracts will be published by Wiley as a conference issue of the journal YEAST. Abstracts will also appear in searchable format on the SGD website (http://genome-www.stanford.edu/Saccharomyces/) about four weeks before the conference.

Abstracts considered for publication in the abstract book must meet the following criteria:

a The registration fee for the presenting authors must have been received by Congrex.

a The abstract must match the required format (see below).

a The abstract must be received on or before March 1, 2003; publication in the abstract book cannot be guaranteed for abstracts which are received considerably later; distribution at the conference will then only be possible in an appendix that is not part of the official YEAST publication.

a The abstract content must meet - in a broad sense - the scope of the conference.

a The abstract must contain mainly new and unpublished or very recently published data.

a The abstract must not contain figures or tables.

a The abstract must be written in well-phrased English; no editing of abstracts will be done by the publisher, SGD or the conference organiser.

Abstract submission is possible exclusively online through the conference website at www.yeast2003.se. Abstracts sent by mail or fax cannot be considered.

When submitting an abstract you need to indicate the category (invited lecture - poster - poster; I wish to talk/I was asked to talk in a workshop).

In addition, you need to indicate the poster subject/workshop title (see page 7 for list) under which you wish your abstract to appear.

Even if selected for presentation in a workshop, a poster must be displayed.

The abstract submission website will be open from October 1, 2002 until June 30, 2003. Note again that only abstracts submitted on or before March 1, 2003, will be guaranteed consideration for the YEAST abstract book.

Note that the abstract deadline for those requesting financial support is January 15, 2003.

Conference Sessions1. PLENARY SESSIONSPlenary sessions consist of presentations by invited scientists, followed by short discussions. There will be ten such sessions with a total of about 40 plenary presentations.

2. POSTER SESSIONSAll posters will be on display throughout the conference. Please mount your poster during the afternoon of Monday, July 7, and dismantle it on Saturday, July 12, before noon.

Poster boards are 90 cm wide and 120 cm high.

Posters will be displayed within a subject area (see page 7) chosen by the author. Some poster subjects will be arranged in ”arenas” together with commercial exhibitions and other activities within the spacious poster/exhibition area (see below). Poster presenters will be required to be present at the poster during certain times, which will be announced on the website and at the conference.

3. WORKSHOPSWorkshops are set-up somewhat differently this time. They are organised by convenors that have been chosen in advance for their wide knowledge within a field. Convenors will introduce and drive the workshop, stimulate discussion and will invite short presentations from abstracts as well shorter statements on ideas and theories. They may approach possible contributors in advance and also may be approached by scientists who wish to make a presentation during the workshop, but it is at the discretion of the convenors to decide on the entire set-up of the workshops. Note: EVERY workshop contribution longer than three minutes and with more than two slides must be accompanied by an accepted abstract and must also be presented as a poster.

4. SPEAKER’S CORNERSSpeaker’s corners are a new activity at yeast conferences. Specific times will be allocated for speakers to meet participants interested in discussion apart from the audience. Specific areas with seating possibilities will be allocated to this purpose. Times will be announced during the conference.

5. ARENAS AND ACTIVITIESThroughout the conferences there will be specific themes (”arenas”) and activities.

MicroscopyA specific section in the poster/exhibition area will be allocated to microscopic (subcellular structural) studies of yeast. The area will consist of posters dedicated to new advances in microscopy or localisation of proteins or other components within the cell, methods, tools, related databases etc. There will be possibilities for video display. The same area will accommodate commercial exhibitions in the field.

You are encouraged to submit abstracts for this activity. Contact the conference organisers if you have specific ideas for demonstration etc.

!!Submit photos for the competition on the best yeast picture; see www.yeast2003.se for more details on this special award!!

Genomics and bioinformaticsA specific section of the poster/exhibition area will be allocated to the analysis and presentation of large-scale approaches in genomics and functional genomics. This may include, among others, methods/tools for sequence interpretation, global gene and protein expression, bioinformatics, data visualisation, databases, approaches for modelling, simulation, etc. The same area will accommodate commercial exhibitions in the field.

You are encouraged to submit abstracts for this activity. Contact the conference organisers if you have specific ideas for demonstration etc.

Model systems studied by yeast researchersMany yeast labs study other model systems as well, including fungi, plant, or animal systems. How research on different models is integrated in a lab is of high interest to all yeast researchers. This will be highlighted in several plenary lectures. In addition, a poster session and a workshop will be dedicated to this subject.

Yeast labs using other models in addition to yeast(s) are encouraged to submit abstracts for this theme!!

Please submit work on so-called ”unconventional yeasts” to the session that best fits the biological phenomenon you study. We believe that your work will attract the most interest this way. Note that the ”International Yeast Conferences” cover studies on all yeasts including, of course, S. pombe, C. albicans and K. lactis.

TravellingGöteborg (Gothenburg) is located on the Swedish west coast in the southern part of the country, 300km north of Copenhagen, 300km south of Oslo and 450km southwest of Stockholm. Göteborg can be reached conveniently (and often enjoyably) by many different ways.

1. By airThe airport ”Göteborg Landvetter” is served by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Lufthansa, Air France, British Airways, KLM, Austrian Airlines, Crossair, Finnair and other carriers, including low-fare companies. It connects with direct flights to many major cities in Europe. There are about ten daily flights to and from Copenhagen or Stockholm for convenient connection from all over the world.

Landvetter airport is located 25km east of the city. There are busses every 30min (airport bus, flygbussarna) that stop in front of the congress centre (”Korsvägen/Svenka mässan”). The trip takes 20min and costs SEK 60 (in 2002). Taxis have a fixed price (ask for it!) from the airport, which should not be more than about SEK 350.

On Monday, July 7, 2003, there will be a conference service for your assistance in the baggage claim area of the international arrival hall.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is the official airline for this conference. Bookings using the reference number CFSE0304 qualify for the special conference fares for flights operated by

SAS, Lufthansa (between Germany and Scandinavia), Spanair, Air Baltic and Air Botnia.

The airport ”Göteborg Säve” is served by RyanAir (so far only Göteborg-London Stansted). Check under www.ryanair.com. Säve airport is located 15km north of the city and is connected by a bus service.

2. By trainFrom the European continent you connect through Copenhagen. There are about 15 trains per day from Copenhagen to Göteborg. Depending on the type of train, the journey from Copenhagen to Göteborg takes between 3.5-5h.

3. By car and ferryWhen planning for a vacation or travelling from Europe with several people, the car may be a more suitable option and probably the most economic one. Any way that you choose, you will need to traverse over water to reach the Scandinavian subcontinent

Coming from the western part of Central Europe you generally travel via Hamburg, Germany. From Hamburg the journey to Göteborg takes about eight hours. There are several options:

a The bridge-tour through Denmark. From Hamburg via Odense (320km), Copenhagen (150km), Malmö (10km) to Göteborg (280km). Total trip about 750km.

a From Hamburg to Frederikshaven (about 500km) in the north of Denmark and then by ferry to Göteborg; depending on the type of ferry the trip is 2-3h. About eight departures per day (www.stenaline.com).

a From Hamburg to the ferry Puttgarden-Rødby (160km; Germany to Denmark, ferry 45min, every 30min), through Denmark to Helsingør (200km), ferry Helsingør-Helsingborg (Denmark to Sweden, 20min, every 20min) and then to Göteborg (230km). Operated by Scandlines (www.scandlines.com). As an alternative to the second ferry one can also use the spectacular Öresund bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö (but this trip is 50km longer and somewhat more expensive).

a From Hamburg to Kiel (100km) and then the overnight ferry (with cabins) Kiel-Göteborg with daily departures at 1930. The ferry takes 13.5h.

Coming from the Eastern part of the Central Europe, you may choose the route via Rostock and then by ferry to Trelleborg. This ferry takes 6-7h with three departures per day. Operated by Scandlines (www.scandlines.com). Trelleborg-Göteborg: 300km.

There are ferries to Göteborg from the UK and those are served by DFDS (www.dfdstorline.com/Infobridge/). The most common route is Newcastle-Göteborg (via Norway, 26.5h, two per week).

Coming from Eastern Europe and Finland: there are various ferries connecting to Sweden, commonly via Stockholm (from Talinn, St. Petersburg, Helsinki) or Norrköping (from Helsinki, Riga) or Karlskrona (from Gdansk). Stockholm-Göteborg is 450km, about 5-6h by car or 3.5-6h by different types of trains. Check your travel agent for companies serving those ferry routes.

Application for supportThere are a certain number of grants available to support the attendance of young scientists. Most of these grants are part of a dedicated support from the European Commission (about 55 grants) but we do our best to make grants available for overseas delegates too. Please apply. The following conditions qualify for support:

1. From the support of the European Commission, grants can only be given to nationals from a country that is member of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom) or that has signed the contract for the fifth framework programme with the EC (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland). Hence, applicants must provide a certified photocopy of their passport. Note: an additional requirement is that grantees are active in one of these countries: post-docs being nationals of one of the countries listed above but working e.g. in the US are, unfortunately, not eligible for such support.

However, we expect to receive support from other sources too and hence every young scientist is encouraged to apply.

2. Applicants must be younger than 35 (certain exceptions apply: periods for army service or child care can be claimed to increase the age limit; proof is required).

3. Applicants must submit an abstract and must be prepared to give an oral presentation within a workshop (note that approval of support does not automatically mean that the grantee will be chosen for oral presentation, or vice versa).

The following items must be included in the application:

a The abstract

a A short CV (max. one page)

a A certified photocopy of the passport

a A supporting letter (max. one page) from the principle investigator of the group or from the head of department

a A max. one-page summary of the research project presently being pursued as well as of plans for the near future

a A covering letter (max. one page) stating why the support is needed to attend the conference and why attending the conference is important for the project and the personal development and any other arguments that support the application

All material should be printed in no less than 11 point Times New Roman.

The deadline for application for support is January 15, 2003.Applicants can expect a decision by March 15, 2003.

Application must be sent to

General InformationFormalities for entering Sweden

The Kingdom of Sweden is part of the European Union and the Schengen Treaty. However, you may be required to present a valid ID or passport when entering the country or at other instances within the country.

A valid Visa is necessary when coming from certain countries outside Europe and you are advised to check well in advance with a Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. To receive an invitation letter for the purpose of a Visa application tick the box in the application form or mail to [email protected].

Language

English is the official language at the conference.

Swedish is the language spoken in Sweden. However, essentially everybody you will deal with in Göteborg (and most over Sweden) will understand and commonly speak English.

Insurance

The conference cannot be made liable for any personal injuries, damage or loss of property that may occur during the conference to any of the delegates. You are advised to check well in advance that all relevant personal and corporate insurances are valid when attending the meeting.

Currency

Sweden has NOT adopted the Euro. The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Crown (SEK, in Swedish: krona, plural kronor; symbol: kr). As off August 2002 one USD/Euro is about nine SEK, one GBP is about 14 SEK.

Shops and restaurants in Göteborg do, however, accept Euro, although not at the most favourable rate. Credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) are generally accepted in shops, hotels, restaurants and official taxis. Money can be changed most conveniently in Forex offices (see www.forex.se for rates) at the airport and in town.

Electricity

There is 220V electricity.

Time and daylight

During the conference Central European Summer Time is valid (GMT +1h).

At the time of the conference you can expect the sun to be up from about 0415 to 2215 plus about 2h of twilight before sunrise and after sunset, depending on weather conditions.

Weather

In July, the weather tends to be fine to variable and you should be prepared for anything from sunny conditions with deep-blue skies to rainy days. Accordingly, maximum temperatures can vary between 15-32°C. Water temperatures in the sea may be around 16-20°C and in the inland lakes between 17-22°C. Commonly, the most stable summer weather is experienced between mid-July and end-August. Since Göteborg is at the seaside, there is commonly some light wind. Check http://weather.yahoo.com/ for Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dress

No formal dress is required during the conference. The venue is air-conditioned; hence do not dress too lightly.

Safety

Generally, Göteborg is a safe city although it is advisable not to frequent centrally located parks, empty spots, and shopping centres after midnight.

During the summer, pickpocket bands have become an increasing plague in Göteborg, especially in crowded places and during the touristic high season, which occurs at the time of the conference. Be prepared.

Local transport

Public transport is not required to reach the venue from any of the conference hotels. But when you wish to move around, there is a very well developed network of trams and busses in Göteborg. If you buy the Göteborg Card (at ”pressbyrån”, ”tidpunkten”; offers reduced entry to many attractions), public transport is included. A single trip (90 min) within the city costs SEK 16; when buying a 100 SEK ticket at ”Pressbyrån” or ”Tidpunkten” the price/trip is about SEK 10. The tram/bus system also includes ferries to the islands in the archipelago of Göteborg (Göteborg’s skärgården). Such ferry tours are very popular and the islands offer many small remote scenic beaches.

Car rental

Renting a car is quite affordable in Sweden. All major companies are represented. Note that many petrol stations (Statoil) all over the country rent out cars with very good conditions.

Sponsors and ExhibitorsCapture immediate market exposure, year-long recognition for your company or organisation, perhaps find future employees or collaborators and support the goals of the congress yeast2003 by becoming a sponsor and/or exhibitor at this international conference. Do not miss this opportunity for great visibility in a way that meets the style and needs of your company/organisation.

Yeast2003 is the 21st conference in a most successful series organised every other year by the international yeast research community. This community is at the forefront of genetics, molecular cell biology, functional genomics, and biotechnology, as illustrated by recent Nobel laureates. The number of participants at previous meetings has been 800-1,000 from all over the world.

Yeasts are the most important industrial microorganisms used in brewing, wine making, bread baking, protein production, drug screening and more. Moreover, yeast is an excellent model organism. Yeast researchers make use of all relevant research tools in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, genomics, functional genomics and bioinformatics. Yeast researchers publish in the most prestigious science journals. Many now commonly used research tools in genetics and genomics, have been developed by yeast researchers. Hence, this conference is an important market place for interacting with an innovative and well-funded research community.

The conference has an extremely high visibility within the research community. It is THE place to make new contacts for future business, ventures, collaboration, and recruitment. Note also that this conference provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the needs of your (potential) costumers, to train your staff in customer relation and to be updated on latest developments and trends.

Exhibitors: the exhibition area will be integrated with the large poster area ensuring high visibility. Special arrangements such as for demonstrations are certainly possible.
