S P E C I A L A N N O U N C E M E N T S CHANGES IN POSTURE A T MASS

Effective immediately Archbishop Etienne, in his recent Pastoral Letter, has decreed that the Archdiocese of Seattle will be in

conformity with the rest of America during the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the Communion Rite at Mass. It is proper and

fitting that we should kneel before the majesty of God, so with that in mind, we should begin using the following postures

from this time forward:

Kneel after the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy);

Stand after the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer;

Kneel after the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) and remain kneeling until you go forward for Communion;

Bow before receiving the Body or Blood of Christ;

Remain standing to receive Holy Communion;

Sit or kneel after returning to your pew and during the period of sacred silence after Communion.

Please begin to adapt these new postures as we resume public Masses. The Archbishop has asked that all parishes implement

the changes at this time, although the new guidelines will be official with the start of the new liturgical year beginning Advent

2020.

THE APOSTLES’ COLUMN

This column is a new feature in our bulletin, coming from the desk of our Pastoral Coordinator. It will be a weekly highlight

for all of us, as apostles in the Church, missionaries within our own parishes and communities. We are all called to spread the Good News, and this column will help us to consider practical ways to deepen our own relationship with Jesus Christ so that

we can be role models for others. July 5, 2020

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light...

Greetings in Christ!

One huge jump that we all have to make at some point in our lives is to trust God implicitly: not just with some things, but with everything:

our material needs, our family dynamics, our health, our jobs, the world at large...the list is endless. We live in a state of concern and trepi-

dation about every aspect of our lives. Do we ever stop to consider our constant loss of peace in the comings and goings of our day? In the

current state of affairs we are getting further and further from that place of peace: we are more isolated than ever, not just physically but

socially as well; we cover our faces, even when no one else is around us; we are immersed in the daily news of the mainstream media which

only serves to heighten our fear about things we have absolutely no control over. We have lost our peace, collectively and individually.

Where does peace come from anyway? And how do we get it? Not just for a moment or two; but true and lasting peace? The answer

is simple, yet demanding, because it requires us to change. Jesus Christ is peace. Jesus is the only source of deep and abiding peace.

Our worldly burdens are oppressive, but Jesus has offered to take our burdens, and carry them for us! So what does He demand?

That we surrender everything to Him, and therein lies the difficulty. It’s so challenging to let go, to allow God’s plan to unfold in our

midst and not try to control the outcome, or the steps leading up to it. Sometimes we get part way there: we begin to let go; then we

find ourselves not happy with whatever is happening and we get fearful, or we grumble and complain.

Surrender is one of the first steps in living a Christ-centered life. Each of us is at a different place on the journey, but we can all surren-

der in some way every single day: sometimes it’s little things like not having a favorite snack; or getting up 5 minutes earlier than usu-

al to start the day with prayer. Sometimes it’s a little more difficult, like doing our best to avoid speaking uncharitably about some-

one, or not having a judgment or an opinion about a situation around us. Surrender is something that comes with time and practice,

but we have to want it to attain it. And it will only come with God’s grace.

Novenas are prayers that come in groups of nine, typically once a day for nine days. They are very powerful and we can often see the

fruit of the prayer before the novena ends. In this time of great uncertainty in the Church, with Covid-19 and the civil unrest that

stretches across the globe, we could all use some peace...peace that comes only through surrender to Jesus. I’ve included in The

Apostles’ Column a wonderful start to letting go, and giving everything over to Jesus: The Surrender Novena. Perhaps we could each

take 10 minutes a day, in a quiet place for the next nine days and ask Jesus to take our burdens, so that we can have peace. I’ve been

known to convert 9 day novenas to ‘perpetual’ novenas, praying them over and over for a particular grace in my life to help me change.

Maybe a perpetual Surrender Novena is just what the Church needs right now…. Come to Me all you who labor, and I will give you rest….

The Surrender Novena ~the words of Jesus to Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo

Day 1 — Why do you confuse yourselves by worrying? Leave the care of your affairs to me and everything will be peaceful. I say to you in

truth that every act of true, blind, complete surrender to me produces the effect that you desire and resolves all difficult situations.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 2 — Surrender to me does not mean to fret, to be upset, or to lose hope, nor does it mean offering to me a worried prayer asking me to

follow you and change your worry into prayer. It is against this surrender, deeply against it, to worry, to be nervous and to desire to think

about the consequences of anything. It is like the confusion that children feel when they ask their mother to see to their needs, and then

try to take care of those needs for themselves so that their childlike efforts get in their mother’s way. Surrender means to placidly close the

eyes of the soul, to turn away from thoughts of tribulation and to put yourself in my care, so that only I act. Saying “You take care of it.”

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times) continued on page 4…..

The Surrender Novena ~the words of Jesus to Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo continued . . . . . .

Day 3 — How many things I do when the soul, in so much spiritual and material need turns to me, looks at me and says to me; “You take care of it,” then close its eyes and rests. In pain you pray for me to act, but that I act in the way you want. You do not turn to me, instead, you want me to adapt to your ideas. You are not sick people who ask the doctor to cure you, but rather sick people who tell the doctor how to. So do not act this way, but pray as I taught you in the Our Father: “Hallowed be thy Name”, that is, be glorified in my need. “Thy kingdom come”, that is, let all that is in us and in the world be in accord with your kingdom. “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven”, that is, in our need, decide as you see fit for our temporal and eternal life. If you say to me truly: “Thy will be done”. Which is the same as saying: “You take care of it”. I will intervene with all my omnipotence, and I will resolve the most difficult situations.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 4 — You see evil growing instead of weakening? Do not worry, Close your eyes and say to me with faith: “Thy will be done, You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that I will intervene as does a doctor and I will accomplish miracles when they are need-ed. Do you see that the sick person is getting worse? Do not be upset, but close your eyes and say “You take care of it.” I say to you that I will take care of it, and that there is no medicine more powerful than my loving intervention. By my love, I promise this to you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 5— And when I must lead you on a path different from the one you see, I will prepare you; I will carry you in my arms; I will let you find yourself, like children who have fallen asleep in their mother’s arms, on the other bank of the river. What troubles you and hurts you im-mensely are your reason, your thoughts and worry, and your desire at all costs to deal with what afflicts you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 6— You are sleepless; you want to judge everything, direct everything and see to everything and you surrender to human strength, or worse- to men themselves, trusting in their intervention,- this is what hinders my words and my views. Oh how much I wish from you this surrender, to help you and how I suffer when I see you so agitated! Satan tries to do exactly this: to agitate you and to remove you from my protection and to throw you into the jaws of human initiative. So, trust only in me, rest in me, surrender to me in everything.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 7— I perform miracles in proportion to your full surrender to me and to your not thinking of yourselves. I sow treasure troves of graces when you are in the deepest poverty. No person of reason, no thinker, has ever performed miracles, not even among the saints. He does divine works whosoever surrenders to God. So don’t think about it any more, because you mind is acute and for you it is very hard to see evil and to trust in me and to not think of yourself. Do this for all your needs, do this all of you and you will see great continual silent mira-cles. I will take care of things, I promise this to you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 8— Close your eyes and let yourself be carried away on the flowing current of my grace; close your eyes and do not think of the pre-sent, turning your thoughts away from the future just as you would from temptation. Repose in me, believing in my goodness, and I prom-ise you by my love that if you say “You take care of it.” I will take care of it all; I will console you, liberate you and guide you.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

Day 9— Pray always in readiness to surrender, and you will receive from it great peace and great rewards, even when I confer on you the grace of immolation, of repentance and of love. Then what does suffering matter? It seems impossible to you? Close your eyes and say with all your soul, “Jesus, you take care of it.” Do not be afraid, I will take care of things and you will bless my name by humbling yourself. A thousand prayers cannot equal one single act of surrender, remember this well. There is no novena more effective than this.

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything! (10 times)

L E A R N I N G SUNDAY DEVOTIONS | A MEDITATION ON NE XT WEEK’S MASS READINGS

July 12, 2020 | 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading—— The Bible views God’s Word as a force, an active agent that effects what it sets out to do. God’s word

never “goes in one ear and out the other.” Such ineffectiveness is not within the nature of the Word of God. God’s Word is efficacious. [Isaiah 55:10-11]

Responsorial Psalm—“The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.” [Psalm 65]

Second Reading—Paul’s reflection in this reading is filled with hope and confidence in the midst of suffering, something that each person experiences in a unique, individual way. As he writes about suffering, Paul addresses all of us, nudging us to re-

flect on our own understanding, since human responses to suffering are as individual as the sufferings themselves.

For Paul, present suffering that will be changed to future joy is only part of the truth to be revealed. He says that even now we

already have the first fruits of the Spirit; we already have a taste or a down payment of the glory that will be ours fully in the

future. That means that we not only await glory, but we experience it even now, even in the midst of our hardships. Paul is an-nouncing here the Good News of God’s glory that encompasses past, present and future. [Romans 8:18-23]

Gospel—“There are three distinct movements in this reading. First is the parable itself. Second is Jesus’s response to the question of why He teaches in this cryptic manner. Third is the allegorical interpretation, placed on the lips of Jesus, of the

various elements of His story.

By their nature, parables require effort to understand and apply. Therefore, such constructs will be more accessible to seekers, those disposed to explore a story’s meaning, than to listeners at large. Reflecting on Semitic thought, the Gospel presents

understanding as a special gift that God bestowed upon true disciples but withheld from the crowds. However, individuals are held responsible for failing to understand because they “look but do not see and hear but do not listen.”

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

RCIA | QUEEN OF ANGELS

The QA candidates, catechumens and their sponsors are still awaiting word from the

Archdiocese regarding when and how their sacraments will be received. Zoom meetings

with Deacon Adams have continued and Father Leonardo has joined in over the continued quarantine. During the month of

June they learned about the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and how Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque promoted the un-

derstanding that the symbol of Jesus’ physical human heart, pierced, encircled by thorns, and enflamed represents His

Divine unconditional love for all of humanity despite the suffering that has been and is still endured. Some candidates have

already prepared their own hearts and received Jesus’ mercy as the Sacrament of Confession has become available. Others are

examining their lives and their consciences as they look forward to climbing onto the Barque of Peter and receiving the flesh

of Jesus, the Bread of Life!

Please keep them in your prayers as they try to remain patient.

July: The Precious Blood —The blood of Christ saves us

from sin. It is the blood of Christ that gives us the hope of

heaven. St. Paul tells us that Jesus reconciled “to himself all

things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the

blood of his cross” (Col. 1:20). Without the blood of Christ

shed for us, all would be lost.

those suffering because of the coronavirus—

for those who are sick and their families, for those who

are frightened and alone, and for all doctors, nurses, and

researchers who are serving the common good.

For vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.
