after months of cozy hibernation, it’s time to shed your winter layers & delight in the dawning of spring & summer. breathe in the scent of spring blossoms basking in dazzling sunshine. striking landscapes beneath blue skies provide the ideal setting for romantic days that fade into grand sunsets. new york state’s vibrant energy embraces those who celebrate their love in this magical place.

flowing sundresses and dainty sandals embody the spirit of spring, replacing bulky winter jackets and sturdy boots. let the spring weather bring natural accents, like delicate feathers, refined turquoise, and seashells, to your personal style. “seaside swoon,” page [72] our surf-inspired gown and design feature, demonstrates the ease with which sophisticated motifs complement rustic decor and bohemian details. the rise in temperature creates the perfect opportunity to incorporate saltwater sensibilities into high fashion and nautical design with seafaring accessories page [78]and homespun driftwood garlands page [87].

summer is the ideal time to enliven diy projects with nature, art, and visions of the past. my grandmother, a native vermonter, wove these elements into her daily life. an outdoor enthusiast, she spent summer days foraging for berries and living off the land. she taught me about the dignity of dirt underneath my fingernails, while also teaching me an appreciation for all things that sparkle. her passion for antiquing furthered my love of time-weathered trinkets and lives on in the pages of this magazine. we @ wellwed encourage you to draw from your own heritage and include a mixture of heirloom details, couture elements, and new york state’s authenticity in your special day. our vibrant “color palette” section, pages [105-142], draws from the organic shades found in the blossoms of spring and lush orchards of summer to prove that eye-catching inspiration can bloom in your own backyard. continue to be inspired by the best of new york state as you peruse our “made” section, page [184]— overflowing with unique and eco-chic treats that add a pinch of local spice to any warm-weather wedding.

as you relish the golden afternoons of spring and summer with your betrothed, remember to breathe in the refreshing new york state air. savor the sweet sound of birds chirping hello, and allow yourself to be swept away in the special moments that will forever mark your path to eternal love.

it’s always wise to follow your instincts when choosing the photo style that is most appealing to you. at the end of the day, the style you choose should reflect your unique personality and the tone of your wedding.

anna post gives brides the tools to capture every magic moment.

*

etiquette

[with anna post]

>> it’s a snap! “wediquette” expert anna post gives brides the key tools & advice they need to work with their wedding photographers to capture every special detail.

number one

An engagement shoot is a smart way to get to know your photographer. Use the photos for your wedding website, save-the-date cards, engagement album, or guest book. The shoot is also a chance to practice relaxing in front of the camera and to discover which types of photos are important to you. Have fun with the engagement session, and let your person-ality shine through.

number two getting to knoW You:

Start by viewing a variety of candidates’ work online. when you’ve narrowed the field, meet with prospective photographers in person. look for personality qualities that inspire confidence and show an ability to organize and take charge, yet allow you to feel relaxed. Bring visual examples of what you like from magazines and the internet. Having a clear idea of what you like stylistically helps potential photographers understand your point of view, and ultimately makes your initial meeting much more productive.

let’s meet:

Always have a written agreement which spells out—among other things—the name of the actual photographer, times, places, number of hours, types of photos, key shots, number of touch-ups, and copyright permis-sions. Having everything in writing will help to ensure you get the photos you want with no confusion. You will end up feeling much more relaxed on your special day, knowing that your agreement with your photographer is solidified in writing.

number three ink the deal:

number four

Your photographer is not a mind reader, so communicate clearly. Provide a list of key people you’d like photographed and assign someone who can point them out.

number five be considerate:

Negotiate the inclusion of an album with your photographer, or have photos on a cd, and obtain copyright permission to create your own album after your wedding. look for a service that provides high-quality printing and design, archival papers, and strong, sewn bindings. don’t forget albums for parents and grandparents.

print it:

þ engagement photosþ the “first look”þ processional shots of attendantsþ bride and father walking up the aisleþ bride and groom exchanging vowsþ bride and groom kissingþ bride alone; groom aloneþ bride and maid of honorþ groom and best manþ bride and groom with wedding partyþ bride with her attendantsþ groom with his attendantsþ bride/groom with her/his parentsþ details of decor: cake, bouquet, favors, etc.þ bride and groom cutting the cakeþ bride and groom’s first danceþ bride dancing with her fatherþ groom dancing with his motherþ bouquet tossþ bride and groom leaving the reception

ready, set, smile shot list a few of our favorites:

never hesitate to articulate your vision to your photographer— you want the end result to reflect the joyful mood of your wedding. - anna post

THE PROPOSAL. At the end of August 2007, Ashley and Gil were

preparing for Gil’s last tour in Iraq. Gil planned a day full of things the couple

loved to do—an intimate lunch, miniature golf, and spa treatments. It wasn’t

until that evening that Ashley discovered their hotel room had been decorated

with flowers and candles. Gil had even created a board showcasing all of the

letters they wrote to each other and pictures they had taken together over

the years. “As I was looking at everything, I started to get a clue of what was

going on,” says Ashley. “I turned around, and Gil was on his knee asking me

to marry him.”

THE DAY & DESIGN. The pair chose a color palette featuring yellow,

graphite, white, and ivory to create a bright, fun, and elegant feel. “I love that

yellow is so bright and cheerful, and the graphite just really held everything

together,” says Ashley, who also designed and printed all of their wedding

stationery including the invitations, RSVPs, place cards, and menus herself.

In remembrance of her late uncle and grandfather, Ashley incorporated her

uncle's rosary into her bouquet and carried her grandfather’s handkerchief,

embroidered with his and her initials and the wedding date. The couple also

decided to break tradition by meeting for the first time before their ceremony.

They wanted to make sure they had enough time to take the perfect

photographs without the pressure to get to the reception. “It was actually

pretty romantic,” says Ashley. “We met out on my parent’s farm where it was

incredibly peaceful, and we had a chance to calm our nerves.”

IN REMEMBRANCE OF HER LATE UNCLE & GRANDFATHER, ASHLEY INCORPORATED HER UNCLE’S ROSARY INTO HER BOUQUET &

CARRIED HER GRANDFATHER’S HANDKERCHIEF, EMBROIDERED WITH HIS & HER INITIALS & THE WEDDING DATE.

Jill Freeman was a graduate student at California’s pepperdine University when Brian axline, an attractive information technology manager, caught her eye at a staff function. as luck would have it, their paths crossed again at the annual staff beach party in Laguna Beach. as Jill nervously awaited his arrival, Brian was busy picking up his secret romantic weapon—his adorable Rottweiler Dexter—to bring to the party to impress dog-loving Jill. His plan worked, and the pair soon enjoyed their first date over Korean barbeque. Years later, on a Christmas trip to visit his family, Brian arranged for the couple to have dinner at the very same restaurant. after dinner, the couple took a leisurely stroll around Balboa Island. Brian became flustered, which concerned Jill a bit: “When we stopped at the tip of the island, Brian started descending down on one knee, and in response, I followed him down, thinking he might need medical assistance,” Jill says, recalling her comedic reaction. Brian, of course, signaled her to stand back up and popped the question.

before the ring + the proposal.

Jill & brian chose bolton landing for its breathtaking combination of mountains & water. the organic beauty of the setting created the serene ambiance for the couple to say their “i-do’s.”

Jill and Brian worked with a Humanist Celebrant officiant to fill their heartfelt ceremony with love, laughter, and individuality. “We were so happy to work with an officiant who was open to our ideas and wishes, could relay both wit and earnestness, and was open to accommodating our different backgrounds and traditions,” Jill says. The couple also took great care to incorporate Jill’s Cuban heritage and ‘Latin panache’ into every aspect of their special day—including the perfect vintage cigar box to serve as a ring carrier. at the end of the day, the ceremony was utterly perfect and a true testament to the strength of their love.

the design. Jill loves rustic-chic design, vintage details, and pops of classic, preppy charm. For her and Brian’s magical wedding celebration, she created a natural, berry-infused palette inspired by the paintings of Monet and the breathtaking landscapes of New england. “I adopted a multi-scaled ‘stripe’ motif to juxtapose tailored, nautical elegance against a more unstructured, whimsical charm,” the savvy bride explains. The couple added finishing touches to their special day with playful accents like a darling personalized cake topper, twinkling hanging lanterns, and a scrumptious candy bar—complete with mason jars for guests to fill with delicious delights. From start to finish, their nuptials could not have been sweeter.

Jill & brian opted for a preppy decor theme with plenty of eclectic accents: “we adopted a multi-scaled ‘stripe’ motif to Juxtapose tailored, nautical elegance against a more unstructured, whimsical charm,” the couple explains.

before the ring.

Though some people may argue that the lure of the Internet is detrimental to human connection, erica Kates and Jonathan powell have seen first-hand the romantic power of technology. The couple, both living in Connecticut, met on a popular dating website. What began as casual curiosity soon turned into a heartfelt exchange of long letters, phone conversations, and anticipation. The couple finally met in person when Jonathan, who was in the Navy at the time and traveled often, was passing through erica’s neighborhood on his way to visit his parents. erica had been feeling ill, so Jonathan surprised her with a care package of chicken soup and gingerbread tea to help nurse her back to health. It wasn’t long before the two were going out to dinner, and getting to know each other face-to-face. “although it was our first date, it felt as if we’d been together for ten years,” erica says. From then on, erica and Jonathan made a point to see each other as often as possible, and eventually moved to upstate New York as an inseparable couple.

erica & Jonathan chose the finger lakes region for their organically elegant celebration — the beauty of the natural environment made them feel as if they’d created a home away from home.

the proposal. a little less than a year after their meaningful first date, the couple took a lakeside stroll on the picturesque skaneateles waterfront, down to the pier. erica, a wedding coordinator and designer by profession, suspected that Jonathan would likely propose on their one-year anniversary. However, Jonathan simply couldn’t wait. “We were looking over the railing at the fish and leaves floating in the water. Out of nowhere, Jonathan started saying so many nice things! I had no idea he was proposing, until he got down on one knee and brought out the ring,” erica gushes.

the daY & design. From the charming color palette of precious pastels, striking French blues, and subtle pops of champagne and ivory, to luxe feather details and romantic accoutrements, erica and Jonathan’s reception design was stunning. erica drew on her extensive wedding expertise to bring together metallic linens, glimmering trinkets, and dramatic florals for a fantastic effect. In addition to the flawless decor, a super-sweet candy bar, and fresh coconut macaroons, the couple’s personalized day-of details wowed their guests. “a few of our guests’ favorite details of the wedding were the cotton candy and popcorn machines, and our sky lantern release at the end of the evening,” the couple says.

erica + jonathanerica & Jonathan chose a sophisticated motif with soft accents for their french inspired decor. “we wanted a classic, timeless & elegant look, with personal touches,” the couple explains.
