We return this weekend to the continuous reading of the Gospel of St. Mark at our Sunday Masses. St. Mark is the earliest of the four evangelists; biblical scholars estimate that he wrote his gospel around the year 70 AD, approximately 40 years after the death and resur-rection of Christ. Research suggests that St. Mark com-posed this gospel with the Church in Rome in mind. There, Christians in the latter part of the first century were undergoing severe persecution at the hands of the Emperor and his deputies. Throughout his gospel, St. Mark depicts Christ as a suffering Messiah. Jesus is the Anointed One of God who experiences opposition, re-jection and eventually death for preaching his message of repentance and reform, only to be vindicated by God in the resurrection. The cross is the dominant symbol of St. Mark’s gospel; in fact, Jesus’ identity as the Son of God is not fully revealed and known until he is cruci-fied, bringing about a divine solidarity with all those who suffer for their faith in him. Another feature of St. Mark’s gospel is Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the centerpiece of the Lord’s public ministry. Je-sus often used parables, such as the parable of the mus-tard seed in today’s gospel, to speak about the reign of God that was breaking into the world. Drawing upon images and experiences that were familiar to Jews liv-ing in the rural areas of Galilee (like seeds, soil, fruit-bearing plants and harvests) Jesus taught his listeners about how the Kingdom of God would eventually grow and flourish. The imagery of today’s gospel passage delivers the point that we scatter the seed of the King-dom by our faith in Christ and by our labors of love on his behalf; but God’s grace is what makes the seeds sprout and blossom. For the Kingdom to take root in the world, we need to do our part by bearing a credible, effective witness to Christ, but ultimately grace gives the growth. As we read and hear St. Mark’s account of the good news in the coming weeks, may we absorb the seed of God’s word in the fertile soil of our hearts, and allow God’s nurturing grace to work through our pray-er and charity to help our parishes and school grow!
News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: Please pray for Deacon Rick Lesser, our seminarian during the past academic year, who will be ordained to the priesthood next Saturday in Al-bany, New York. Of course, we want to pray regularly for Francis Pham and Paul Wargovich, both of whom are with us now preparing for priestly ministry. aging. One can receive this sacrament multiple times if his or her declining health warrants it. If someone is in the final stages of life, the best time to request a priest to anoint the individual is when Hospice care begins, preferably when the patient is conscious, alert and able to participate in the ritual. Please do not wait until the very end of life to call the priest for this sacrament. With the shortage of priests now becoming more acute, the priest may not be able to respond to that call in a timely fashion. Here is the latest update on our perfor-mance in the 2015 Catholic Appeal: as of June 2, three months into this year’s Appeal, 100 St. Maria Goretti parishioners had pledged $22,570, which is 80% of their goal of $28,078; 197 Our Lady of the Assumption parishioners had pledged $47,878, which is 86% of their goal of $55,512. If you have not yet made a pledge to the Catholic Appeal, please do so as soon as possible. Your donation will help the Catholic Church in Eastern Massachusetts to educate the young in faith, form our future priests, deacons and lay ecclesial min-isters, care for the sick and dying, and evangelize the un-churched. Pledge packets can be found at the en-trances of our churches. Don’t forget, the 5PM Sunday Mass at St. Maria’s will be suspended from July 5 through September 6; it will resume on Sunday, Sep-tember 13. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!

Oh such beautiful images! Trees, branches, birds, seed, fruit. The mustard seed is our paradigm for evangeli-zation. “The smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants”. One person sharing his/her faith with one person, who shares with one person, who shares...Stories of God working in our lives, of prayers made and answered, of feeling the presence of Jesus - this is evangelization that builds the Kingdom of God. We walk by faith; have the courage to speak about it.
