I am in Chicago this weekend to celebrate the wedding of my nephew Peter. In a “holy coincidence” (or rather the work of the Holy Spirit), the first reading for Mass this Sunday is the same one Peter and his fiancé Emily chose for their wedding liturgy: Genesis 2:18-24. This passage is part of the beautiful story in which God cre-ates our first parents to be companions and partners, and to be stewards of the world the Lord brought into being. Having been created from the clay of the earth and given life by the breath of God, Adam became a living being. But God made him not to be alone and isolated, but to be in solidarity and communion with others. So while Adam is asleep, God takes one of his ribs, closes up its place with flesh and “builds up” the rib of the man into a woman. This image suggests that man and woman, though distinct in gender, are made by God to belong to and participate in one another. In God’s design, they complement one another in a part-nership of equals, so much so that in the covenant of marriage, they truly become “one flesh,” united in a bond of faithful love. Catholics believe that Jesus ele-vated marriage from a natural human right to the dig-nity of a sacrament, a sign and instrument of his grace. So, when two baptized persons, a man and a woman, are validly married in the eyes of the Church, they don’t just receive a sacrament, they become one. They become a visible sign and powerful instrument of the intimate nuptial communion between Christ the Bride-groom and the Church, his Bride. In their sacred com-mitment of faithful and fruitful love in good times and in bad, husband and wife manifest the Lord’s desire that we all remain in a loving spiritual communion with him, and that our love for him and one another bear much fruit. We Catholics uphold God’s plan for marriage, even as we want to accompany and care for those who are experiencing the heartache and pain of separation and divorce. May the Lord Jesus bless all our engaged couples preparing for sacramental mar-riage, and all our married couples, giving them the grace they need to sustain them in every trial they face!
News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: I have been asked to preside at the 11 AM Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Monday October 5. This Mass will precede the viewing of the relics of St. Maria Goretti, one of our Collaborative pa-tronesses. All members of our Catholic Community in Lynnfield are invited to attend. St. Maria was a pious, devout Italian girl who was killed by an assailant that was attempting to rape her in 1902. In canonizing St. Maria as a martyr for the faith, the Church extols her not only for the chastity she preserved unto death, but

for the forgiveness she extended to the very man who took her life. As a model of purity and mercy, St. Maria is certainly a saint for our times. Thanks to Donna He-gan for arranging bus transportation to and from the Cathedral on that day. The latest 2015 Catholic Appeal update (as of September 22) reveals that 216 OLA pa-rishioners have pledged $55,368, which is just $144 shy of their goal; and 109 SMG parishioners have pledged $26,325 which is only $1,753 short of their goal. Many thanks to all the donors who have contrib-uted to this annual drive to provide funds for over 50 central ministries offered by the Catholic Church in Eastern Massachusetts! If you have not done so already, pledge cards are available at the entrances of the Church, or you can visit our website and click on the Catholic Appeal icon to help put us over the top. Once again, if a parish in the Archdiocese exceeds its fair share assessment in the Catholic Appeal, it will receive back 60% of the money raised over and above that fig-ure. In the next few weeks, you will be hearing more about the stewardship our parishes need in order to un-dertake daily operations and address some much need-ed Capital Improvement projects, especially those in-volving our church buildings. Thanks to Mary Doorley, a staff member of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center in Braintree and a Lynnfield resident, for her leadership in this noble endeavor. Blessings to all of you in the week ahead! Fr. Paul

Calling all choir members and new singers to come join our voices as one! Singing in the choir is a wonderful way to bring glory to God and to serve our parishes through song. You need not know how to read music or have a perfect voice, just the desire to sing and serve. Please join us for our rehearsals.
