Fundraising

Fundraising is an important part of what the volunteer team do.

Some money we raise, either from our collection boxes or other

fundraising events, will be retained by the group allowing us to hold

events such as our trivia night again in the future.

However, we do have a long term goal for monies raised. This goal

is to be able to assist by sponsoring kids with Crohn’s and/or Colitis

that may be less fortunate than some, allowing them to attend the

camps that are run yearly by Crohn’s & Colitis Australia.

This great idea was put forward by one of our Support Group

members – Mr Shaun Gledhill, so we will be doing all we can to

make it happen.

There is plenty on our list of fundraising ideas…

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle

Christmas Family Day

Wine and Cheese Tasting

Fundraising Ball

Collection Boxes

While concentrating on the Trivia night, we have not had

much opportunity to get out and find some new businesses to

take on our collection boxes. We will be out again soon

looking for new opportunities to increase the number of

collection boxes across the Peninsula.

In the meantime, our collection boxes remain in the local

businesses listed below. Please support them if you can.

Scribes Newsagency – Mornington

Trims Café – McCrae

Café Modi – Mornington

Active Boxing – Frankston

HBT Beauty Therapy - Mornington

Any businesses supporting us will be listed here in our

newsletter and also in the quarterly CCA magazine, Inside

Insight. If you would like to be involved in distributing our

collection boxes please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fast Facts About IBD

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is the collective term for

Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Over 75,000 Australians have IBD (more than 5 million

worldwide) and approximately 18 people are diagnosed in

Australia each day.

Crohn’s Disease is incurable and is associated with a 47%

increase in the mortality risk.

Ulcerative Colitis is only curable’ through radical surgery and

if untreated may also lead to death.

IBD is commonly diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35

years, and can cause significant disability and lengthy absences

from school and workplace.

It is a chronic and largely hidden disease affecting 1 in 250

people aged 5 - 49 nationally.

Australia has one of the highest rates of prevalence and

incidence in the world and each year more and more young

people are being diagnosed

It is not contagious or caused by stress or diet, but a proper

diet can help relieve symptoms and replace lost nutrients.

Medications can reduce inflammation, but surgery is often

required to remove diseased portions of the intestine or treat

complications.

Research estimates that national total hospital costs for IBD

are approximately $100 million per annum

(PwC, ‘Improving inflammatory Bowel disease care across Australia’, March 2013)

Support Group

Our fourth Support Group meeting was held on Tuesday 9th

September at 7.30pm.

Our Mornington group is now very much established. We

have a great group of people who attend regularly and do

not hesitate to make any new members to the group feel

welcome. We keep the meetings informal but there is always

good discussion, and always good laughs.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 14th October. Hope to see

you all there.

The venue: St Peter’s Anglican Church

3 Queen St, Mornington.

(enter via Parish Office entrance - Octavia St)

Parking is available in Queen St and Albert St. Limited parking

is available in Octavia St.

The Mornington meetings are held on the second Tuesday of

the month.

Dates for 2014:

Tuesday 10th June

Tuesday 8th July

Tuesday 12th August

Tuesday 9th September

Tuesday 14th October

Tuesday 11th November

Tuesday 9th December

Recently, letters and emails were sent out asking people to

express their interest in joining Support Groups in Frankston

and Rye. There has been a good response from people

seeking to join a group in both the Rye and Frankston areas.

I am now looking at suitable venues for the new groups to

meet at and still hope to have both groups begin in

November.

CCA support group

meetings provide a

safe and supportive

environment where

individuals impacted

by IBD can express

themselves openly

and receive support

and understanding

from others with similar

experiences.

All members, including

the facilitator are

impacted by Crohn’s

or ulcerative colitis

(IBD) in some way.

We may need to look for an alternate venue for the

first couple of meetings next year. There will be some

serious renovation work carried out at St Peters that

does involve our meeting room. We will decide that

as the work progresses. We will only use the meeting

room providing it is 100% safe for us to do so while the

renovation work is in progress.

[Type text] page 11

Again we have been focusing on other things this month. We

will be back out soon, working to increase this number of

Can’t Wait members covering the Mornington Peninsula.

Our aim is to form a network of members from

Seaford/Frankston through to Portsea. If you know of a

business that would be willing to support the Can’t Wait

Campaign, please contact the volunteer team.

There are no costs involved for the business, if anything they

will benefit as their business name will appear in our

newsletter, the quarterly Inside Insight magazine and of

course on the Can’t Wait website.

A full list of current members is available on the Can’t Wait

website. http://www.cantwait.net.au/

The ‘Can’t Wait’ card

Program is a campaign

to improve national

recognition of the

urgency of Crohn's

Disease and ulcerative

colitis, and when

presented with a ‘Can’t

Wait’ card, to allow the

bearer of the card to go

to the toilet URGENTLY.

The ‘Can’t Wait’ card is

issued to members of

CCA who have been

formally diagnosed with

Crohn's or colitis (IBD)
