    A VBS VOLUNTEER IS . . .

§ Committed to glorifying God. § Eager to lend a helping hand. § Happy to share the gospel. § Engaged in prayer for the children. § Excited about the Lord's plan for Calvary Chapel!

    WHAT TO DO IF . . .

I have an overly active or disruptive child. Contact Dawn and David Hogan and, if necessary, we will assign a volunteer to assist with that child. Some of the kids in my class don't get along. Quietly take the children aside. Tell them that you've noticed that they're not getting along. Let them know that although they don't have to be best friends, they do have to be together all week; things will be a lot more fun if they can at least be kind to one another. If the situation worsens, contact Dawn or David Hogan. A child won't participate. Help shy children feel welcome by calling them by name and asking them questions directly. Give them a special responsibility such as being the line leader or let them go first in playing a game. Respond to their questions with a smile and a statement such as "That's really interesting!" Ask another child to make a special effort to make them feel welcome. You will be late. Preferably call or text your team leader. If they are unavailable, please call or text Dawn at (919) 610-2561. A child is injured. Notify Security who will get the Medical Response Team.

    DAILY MEMORY VERSES

Help children hide Scripture in their heart through these daily memory verses. Take advantage of transitions to and from activities to recite Memory Verses and the goal of the lessons. Monday Isaiah 26:3

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

    Tuesday John 14:6

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the Father except through me.

    Wednesday John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

    Thursday Romans 5:1

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Friday Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

    MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE

§ Students will recite the memory verses and earn a "hole punch" on their coupon card for prize

from the prize box on Friday. § Students are allowed to sing or clap or use other memory techniques to do recitation. § Lots of grace is given if they don't get it "perfect" – feel free to help. § Reward effort and cheerful participation. § Younger classes can say the verses together and if everyone is participating, they will all get a

    hole punch.

  • VBS Volunteer Team Guide Page 10 of 10

§ Encourage the students to recite the verses at the beginning or end of class and work with the class to help them memorize – see memory techniques section.

§ Verses can be recited on any night. If a student is ready to say multiple verses on the first day, that's great. If they want to recite them all on Friday, that's great too!

*** We will be uploading hand motion videos to the Calvary Chapel Cary Children’s Ministry FaceBook page – please watch these videos to help with teaching the children and encourage your kids to learn

    the hand motions before VBS!!!***

    MEMORY VERSE TECHNIQUES

§ Every child (and ADULT) can memorize! The trick is to have material introduced in the

modality that the individual best learns through. The three main types of modality are auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners.

§ As a teacher, try to introduce the memory verses in each of the modalities. § Auditory - this involves recitation, singing, or listening to the verses

    a) Encourage the kids to set the verses to music - easy tunes like jingle bells or happy birthday

    b) Say the verses in different funny voices (robot, valley girl, surfer dude, British, etc.) § Visual - write the verse on the board.

    a) Substitute difficult words with pictures. Pictures are great learning technique for younger students who can't read

    b) Use different colors for different words. Use different typeset for emphasis c) For example - PRAY without CEASING (red lettering reminds you of stopping-use red

lettering with circle around word and slash through it to say "NO Ceasing" visually) d) Say the verse as you erase one word at a time with the class. e) Older kids can "illustrate" the verses on a piece of paper to help them remember

§ Kinesthetic - uses hand motions or body motions to drill memory verses. a) We'll have hand motions made up that you can follow if you'd like with the verses b) You can use a ball to toss back and forth to a student and they say the next word c) Have kids do push-ups or jumping jacks while reciting d) Play popcorn- as you go around the room, the next student pops up to say the next word -

see how fast the entire class can get through the verse

    Thank you for serving!
