Types of Transmission

Help prepare for the future by running CAT 5/6 UTP, instead of RG-59.

UTP for analog – with Baluns

• Consists of 4 twisted pairs.– Relatively inexpensive to produce because they are

unshielded.– Get their shielding (from electrical interference) by

being twisted together in pairs.

• Can go a distance of up to 2000 feet with active baluns. (but remember that IP can only go 323 feet between devices)

• Use one pair for video transmission.• Use another pair for power.

What is IP?

• IP (Internet Protocol) is simply the standard way devices communicate over a network– An IP device communicates digitally via cables (CAT5,

CAT6, or fiber optic), or wireless transmissions vs. analog communication with RG-59.

• The biggest advantage of “Internet Protocol” – Devices conform to a universally recognized standard

that allows easy integration of various manufacturers’ equipment.

Everything needs an IP address

• A numeric identification assigned to devices participating in a computer network. Address can be assigned two ways:

– Static – address is manually assigned following structure defined by network administrators or by using an address within the default group of the routing device.

– Dynamic - assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol server (DHCP). This DHCP device is usually the router onsite

• 192.0.0.64 for example is the default IP address of all Hikvision products.

Cat5e and Cat6 were developed to improve the speed at which data can travel over the network.

• iEEE standard limits distance to 100M (328 feet without repeater or switches)

• As the category number gets higher, so does the speed and Mhz of the wire. This is not a coincidence, because each category brings more stringent testing for eliminating crosstalk (XT) and adding isolation between the wires.

• Find out what they really need and what they expect out of their system.

• Find out why they need it. Just wishful thinking and bare bones budget or do they have a real need. When they have a need/pain they usually make the resources necessary to purchase a solution that will solve their problem.

• Make sure they understand that CSI is a TV show not a reality show.

• Don’t assume you can reduce cameras by increasing MP amount of a camera. (Two 2MP cameras may provide much better coverage than One 5MP camera and perform better in low light).

• Make sure you exceed Storage calculations by 20% to be safe.

• Be prepared to add network devices if cable run is more than 328 feet. (IEEE Ethernet standard says you should not exceed that distance though because there is no error correction you may be able to go past that limit)

• If you are putting a ton of high MP cameras on a system, use multiple 32-channel NVR’s instead of one 64-channel NVR. (Watch max Mbps of input)

• Make sure system is designed to handle current camera requirements and any additions that are likely to be made within a year.

• Take into consideration whether or not future expansion is likely to take place beyond a year. 33rd camera can be costly.

• Discuss benefits and expense of using a RAID configuration.

• Make sure that all existing and new cameras are compatible with the VMS you choose.

Important facts about IP cameras• The higher the resolution the more storage you need.

• Higher resolution cameras are more difficult to view remotely (bandwidth).

• You don’t need 15 or 30 fps, Casinos may require this per gaming commission regulation but at 8fps no one can take the cash, stab a fellow inmate or run out of the store without being seen.

• 720p or 1.3 MP cameras are generally the best performing low light cameras in the industry. After that, the higher the resolution the poorer the performance in low light.

• Do not try to reduce camera counts by increasing megapixels of cameras. (Three 1.3 cameras will give you better coverage than One 5MP)
