Dear Holy Family, St. Anthony and St. Mary’s:

“Can you drink the cup I will drink?” (Mark 10:38)

This question Jesus poses to those learning to follow him in today’s Gospel is very similar to what we will say to those who will make public next weekend their desire to follow Jesus. This year in the RCIA program we have one adult seeking baptism, one adult seeking to enter our Catholic faith from another tradition and two adults returning to the Church after a long absence. In the Rites of Acceptance and Welcome we will greet them…. with…. the cross.

Jesus is referring, to the cup that he sweated blood over in the Garden of Gethsemane until he cried out: “Father let this cup pass me by, but thy will be done not mine.” In today’s Gospel he is making clear to his followers that they are not on their way to riches and fame, but to the cross. In the same way, right at the start of their journey with Christ, we make sure our RCIA candidates understand the same. In fact, to bring the point home, we will trace the cross on their foreheads, their eyes, their shoulders, their hands, their feet and their hearts.

Each year we rotate where the RCIA Rites are celebrated and this year we will be at Holy Family. So this coming Saturday at the 4:00pm Mass at Holy Family we will hear the declaration of intent of the four candi-dates and the testimony of their sponsors. They will be hoping to receive signs of welcome and support from us. Please come and make that welcome more than words.

At our Social Concerns Committee meeting October 8th we had a little bit of an argument over who would have the privilege of speaking on behalf of this year’s Advent Project recipients. We all felt so proud to be part of such a worthy cause that we all wanted to take lead in making it happen.

All three parishes have taken on very significant service projects in these past few years. And who will ever forget the over $10,000.00 we raised for Project Milk as part of our Rural Life Day celebration a year ago. Two years ago St. Anthony started a tradition of giving to those in need overseas at Christmas time. For ex-ample they raised the funds to send an “Ark” of animals through Heifer International. Filling an Ark with two of each of the animals Heifer International sends cost $5,000.00. Now that our Social Concerns Com-mittees have combined efforts, it was agreed to present an Advent Project to all three parishes this year.

They will be inviting us this Advent to build a farm and grow a village of gardens in Saikeri, Kenya, Africa. Perhaps you remember Fr. John Fortune, the deep voiced Irishman, who spoke to us over the summer on Mission Co-op Weekend. All of his priesthood he has served the Massai people in Kenya. Thanks to Churches in our Diocese the people of his parish have been released from the grasp of drought through the digging of wells and are now learning to farm and garden. That’s something we can help with! Watch the next One Voice Newsletter for the details on how and be sure to come November 21 & 22 to see who won the argument over who gets to speak at Mass on behalf of our sister parish in Saikeri, Kenya!

Lastly I share how pleased I am at the progress we are making with getting everyone signed up to have their picture taken for our new pictorial directory. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so this week. On week-days you can just call Margie Szymanski at the parish office (715-255-8017) or Joanne Trunkel (715-267-7264) or Florence Briski (715715-267-4610). Or if you are good with a computer, you can go to our parish website (stanthonyloyal.org), find the “Lifetouch” link in the right hand column of announcements, and make your own appointment. The sign up sheets will be available in the back of church again next weekend.

Pictures are being taken at St. Anthony’s November 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 27 and 28. Pictures are being taking at St. Mary’s on November 12, 13 and 14. And pictures are being taken at Holy Family November 17 and 18. I know with the directory made five years ago neither Holy Family nor St. Mary’s chose to include their phone numbers in the directory. Whatever concern caused that I hope it is gone now. Communication is to a community what blood is to the body. Making it hard for people to contact one another makes it hard for a group of people to become a community. I hope everyone will share their land line, cell phone and e-mail information. Then things will really begin to hum around here! There is some risk, but risk is a part of life! Only the dead are risk free. Can we drink the cup?

Fr. Steve
