You alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. -- Psalm 4:9

SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the expe-rience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the original experience and reminds us of the relaxation and wonder the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads running through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord's suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to for-give our sins. We are given fifty days to ponder this reali-ty--fifty days to savor the experience of Christ's dying and rising for us. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday of Easter Tuesday: St. Anselm Wednesday: Administrative Profession-als Day; Earth Day Thursday: St. George; St. Adalbert Friday: St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen; National Arbor Day Saturday: St. Mark

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Easter season well under way, we now resume our survey of the sacra-ment of the sick. The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose ab-sence is given expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the conso-lation of the Lord's presence at the table to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer. Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dis-patched to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Com-munion. Witnessing the anointing of a woman facing surgery might help anoth-er person to overcome hesitation and ask for the sacrament's healing and strength. Society's impulse may be to marginalize the sick, but the tradition of our commu-nity is to see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and announced with all humility, "Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of Christ." --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

CHRIST IS HERE Christ departed from our sight that we might return to our heart, and there find him. For he departed, and behold, he is here. --St. Augustine

In the season of Easter this year, over 6,000 of our young people in the Diocese of San Jose will receive Jesus in the Eucharist and will be anointed by the Holy Spirit in Confir-mation. That means 6,000 more young disci-ples and budding leaders of our Church will be among us by the end of May 2015. Ac-cording to a national study, about 10-12% of these young people will consider the priest-hood and religious life. That is over 600 young men and women this year alone in San Jose and 600,000 nationally. As the Director of Vocations, I do not know them all of them. The good news is that you as their parents, sponsors, siblings, godpar-ents, grandparents, teachers, catechists, coaches and friends do know them. Your invitation to have them consider a vocation to the priesthood and religious life makes a very big difference. That same study found that when 3 adults approach the same young person about a possible vocation to priest-hood or religious life, that young person is 50% more likely to act on that vocation. Over 100 young men and women in our dio-cese have responded to your invitation and did act on their vocation this past year. They responded by participating in our annual discernment weekends in January in English and Spanish, joined the vocations session at our Diocesan Youth Retreat in June, formed a young disciples group for high schoolers who meet every week and come out to our monthly discernment group for young adults. Your invitations (and ADA contributions) have made these possible and I thank you. I invite you to invite a young person to spend an hour with Jesus to ask the Lord what he wants for their life. On April 24-26, the Of-fice of Vocations will be hosting the annual “40 Hours for the Lord: Eucharistic Adora-tion for Vocations” at the Carmelite Monas-tery on 1000 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara. The 40 Hours will begin with Mass with the Sem-inarians 7pm Friday, April 24. The Monas-tery will then be open for prayer all weekend. We will conclude with Bishop Daly celebrat-ing the 10:30am Mass on Sunday April 26, the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Chil-dren who have received their First Commun-ion this year are invited to the final Mass to join Bishop Daly in a Eucharistic procession immediately following Mass. Details and sign-ups for a specific hour for prayer can be found at www.dsj.org/adoration-for-vocations. Let’s pray to the Lord of the harvest for more laborers for the harvest, especially among the 6,000 young disciples.

Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
