The Musings of Our Pastor
Let me be clear about something! Being formed in our Catholic Faith and being informed with a "working" knowledge or "balanced" understanding of our Catholic Faith is really a lifelong process. Parents, who present a child for the Sacrament of Baptism, are making a commitment to be the first teachers for their child (children) in the ways of the faith, which includes the regular celebration of Sunday Eucharist with the family of faith, as well as cultivating a home life permeated with Catholic values and Catholic identity. All along the way, though, from our earliest days as a child through the latter stages of adult life, it takes lots of personal effort and ongoing commitment, on our part, to be suitably formed in the Catholic Faith and to be appropriately informed about matters of our Catholic Faith. Waving around a Certificate of Baptism or a Certificate of Confirmation or merely having your name on a parish census just does not make us devoted Catholics, who are growing in the Lord and seeking to become more "fully alive" in our Catholic Faith.
Let me be clear about something else! When it comes to practices of prayer and worship or devotional activities, when it comes to the way we talk about and relate to God or the way we seek to understand and live out our Catholic Faith, it is not "one size fits all". Everything is simply not "black and white"! There is polarization, conflict and discord in many areas of the Universal Church, the Body of Christ, between the "conservative-leaning" and the more "liberal-leaning" segments of our Catholic population, but there are truly sincere and devoted Catholics, faithful to the fundamental doctrines of the Church, in both of these divergent camps. It is good to understand that lots of different avenues can be used by God to bring us closer to him and, ultimately, to the fullness of salvation in heaven. There is room for all of us in the Body of Christ here on earth, what-ever our leanings might be in some of these matters. However, it is important to be careful not to try to squeeze the workings of the Holy Spirit into a "box of our own making". Likewise, it is important that we be careful not to get stuck in a "better-than-thou" attitude, which smacks of a judgmental spirit, especially in re-gards to people walking the journey of faith in a manner different from ourselves.
As we celebrate Catechetical Sunday this weekend, we do salute with prayerful thanks the leaders, catechists and helpers, who give truckloads of time and energy to help our children, teens, and adults to be both formed in the Catholic Faith, as well as to be informed with a good "working" knowledge of the Catholic Faith. We also extend our thanks and prayer support to the parents of our youth, who are making an effort to be the first teachers and the best teachers for their children in the ways of the faith. You are true "evangelizers" and catechists, who work hard to "make disciples" for Jesus, especially by planting and nurturing the seeds of our Catholic Faith in the ground of your children's hearts and everyday lives. Keep up the good work for it is a marvelous blessing for Holy Trinity Parish and the bigger Church, the bigger world! May God bless us and help us to be more and more "fully alive" in Jesus, his Beloved Son and
our only Savior. —Father Ken
