MESSAGE FROM PASTOR MIKE
Keep putting into practice all you learned and received. …And the God of peace will be
present—the apostle Paul, Philippians 4:9
In her book Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People, the controversial mission
pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber writes these words: “If our lives were a long piece of fabric with our
baptism on one end and our funeral on another, and we don’t know the distance between
the two, then Ash Wednesday is a time when that fabric is pinched in the middle and the
ends are held up so that our baptism in the past and our funeral in the future meet. The
water and words from our baptism plus the earth and words from our funerals have come
from the past and future to meet us in the present. And in that meeting we are reminded of
the promises of God: That we are God’s, that there is no sin, no darkness, and yes, no grave
that God will not come to find us in and love us back to life. That where two or more are
gathered, Christ is with us. These promises outlast our earthly bodies and the limits of time.”
I like that—the thought that Ash Wednesday is the time when our baptism in the past and our
funeral in the future meet.
It is a startling though, to be reminded that there isn’t a single one of us who gets out of this
thing called “life” alive. We tend to have a “whistling past the graveyard, pretending that a
cheery tune will stave off that reality.” Perhaps we just try to cram in to our schedules as much as is inhumanly
possible, hoping that something… anything will stick and give meaning and purpose and hope or… or… at least distract
us from the reality of our mortality.
In reality, every single one of us works with deadlines (so to speak) at some point or another, right? Kids, how many of
you know that you have something due coming up in the next couple of weeks? Adults, how many of you know that you
have a bill due, a payment, a mortgage, a tax deadline coming up?
Of course, it’s what happens between now and then that matters most of all. Kids, what you do with your time and how
you do it will impact greatly the result of whatever it is you have to turn in the next couple of weeks, right? Adults—what
you do with your money… will impact the result of that bill, that payment, that deadline, right? What we do between
Point A and Point B matters, and that can either be fruitful and meaningful and purposeful. Or, it can be something
else.
What we do between Baptism and our Funerals matters and can either be fruitful and meaningful and purposeful,
filled with a knowledge, a realization, a sense and communion with the very presence of God… since God has promised
to be with us between Point A and Point B, never to leave us abandoned. Never to leave us, period. Or, it can be
something else.
The trouble is that there is so much other stuff between Point A and Point B that sometimes…maybe even often…we
can have a hard time sniffing out exactly where this God is, who promises that there is no sin, no darkness, no grave
that God will not come to find us in and love us back to life. We can have a difficult time encountering the Risen Christ
who promises to be where 2 or more are gathered in his name. The deadline looms.
That’s the point of our Ash Wednesday service and our weekly Wednesday gatherings. The ashen crosses you were
invited to receive are both a reminder of the deadline (so to speak) AND an invitation to use well this time of Lent.
Practice Makes Present our theme declares, which is to say that the 5 activities, the 5 practices are not merely
something to check off your list. Or to be duty-bound or guilt-burdened by. Or to be shamed into doing. But what exactly
do we mean when we say, “God has promised to be with us between Point A and Point B…”? Here’s what I hope we
come to mean: there are moments and places where WE can be and expect God to meet us. God has not simply made
God’s presence known like an inkling in our heads or a bubble in our tummies.
Pastor Mike’s Weekly Schedule
Mondays: Day Off
Tuesdays: 9 AM – 3 PM
Wednesdays: 9 AM – 4 PM
Note: We meet as a staff from around 10 -11:30 AM.
Thursdays: 9 AM – 3 PM
Fridays: All day—Visitation Day. Pastor Mike is not in the office at all.
Saturdays: As needed.
Please note:
These hours just reflect posted office hours. They do not reflect evening meetings, hospital visits, confidential
pastoral care, etc.
These hours will flex with personal family needs (i.e., school programs, etc.); conference, synod, or other outside board
meetings (i.e., Lutheran Campus Ministry at St. Cloud); and other as-needed daily and weekly interruptions where
ministry happens.
If you call or come to the office looking for Pastor Mike, and he’s not available, please leave word with the staff that you are
looking for him. He will get in touch with you and return your message ASAP.
You can also contact him any time by cell (763-333-4499, call or text); by email ([email protected]); or by
Facebook private message (Mike Pancoast).
Time and again, the Bible describes consistent moments and activities where the people of God has epiphanies…
where they catch a clue… where they have Eureka! Moments… where the very presence of God is experienced and
realized. God has revealed his heart and mind in the specific person of Jesus of Nazareth. And God has continued to
reveal his heart and mind in the specific practices of the followers of this same Jesus, whom the Scriptures declare to
be crucified and raised from the dead.
So we mark ourselves with a reminder of the deadline, as it were. To remember that we are on a clock, of sorts, that
our mortality is a very component to being “alive.” And in the meantime, between Point A and Point B… we don’t
obsess or twiddle or thumbs or fill our time with fluff. At least, we’re not supposed to. Instead, put ourselves into
practice.
Now I know how uncomfortable that can be. WHAT do we practice? HOW do we do that? HOW FREQUENTLY are we
talking about here?
The response to those questions has been an invitation to consider a football team… or a band and musicality called
for to mold that together… or a single dancer working in coordination with a dance team. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET
FROM “POINT A” AS A BEGINNER TO “POINT B” AND ACCOMPLISHMENT? Athletes and musicians and people with
motor skills of all kinds speak of “muscle memory.” That is, they practice their skill(s) again and again AND AGAIN until
their bodies respond in an almost “automatic” sort of way. Win or lose as a team, the target for the individual is
“transcendence,”—that is, to be in the zone, or almost “losing oneself” in the flow of the action. THAT CAN HAPPEN
WITH OUR PRACTICE OF FAITH, AS WELL.
God’s richest blessing as you grow in faith and practice this Lent. The “play books” for each skill—Bible reading, prayer,
etc.—can be found in the entry way to the church, as well as on our website: www.sslcmn.org/lent-at-sslc. Let me know
how I can help support you in this…how I can help “coach you up.”
“Keep putting into practice all you learned and received...And the God of peace will be present”—the apostle Paul,
Philippians 4:9
—Pastor Mike

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD……..
We’ve all heard this adage at some point in our lives. It has been used so often that in
many ways it is a cliché thought for us to think about. This month I wanted to challenge you
to think about the thought through a different lens.
It takes a village to raise a child.
Somewhere along the way we became afraid of the child.
Now, before we take the youth leader out back, hear me out. At some point in our lives we have had to face the unfortunate
reality that we aren’t youth anymore. As adults we encounter a world that is incredibly unfamiliar to us. We are forced to face
the reality that we don’t know how to use things like “apps” because we have never been exposed to those things with
regularity. The fact that teens are talking about things that I didn’t have a clue about until I was 25 scares me. It is hard to
keep up with the latest trends, the new hype, the attitudes and ways of thinking. These things are unfamiliar to me and it is a
scary place to be.
The most common conversations I have with adults are…
1. I’ve done my time.
2. What do young people want to know from me? I don’t have anything to offer.
3. Youth today don’t care about adults like me.
4. I’m too old to offer anything to them.
Here’s the thing. Your gifts are vital. Students are hungering to know that you can, in the worst of circumstances, survive the
world. Students want to know that someone cares about them. Not because they have to, like Mom or Dad. They want to
know that someone is willing to invest in them personally and loves them, quirks and all. Not because they have to, but
because they want to. This is where you come in. You have something vitally important to offer a young person and they
have something incredible to offer you.
The recent events have again thrust to the forefront the need to remind our community the vital role you play as leaders, and
village members. It breaks my heart to know that another student is struggling, another student lost their life, and we as a
community play it off as if nothing happened.
Vast majorities of young people today, like you, are looking for someone who genuinely cares about their future. They are
searching for someone who is authentic, available, and affirms his or her gifts and calling in this world. I am asking for all of
us to get a little uncomfortable in our own skin. Find a way to remind a young person just how vital they are in this world, and
invest in their faith, their growth, and their roles in this world.
Some ideas to try this month:
1. Come to worship on a Wednesday night and ask a youth about who they are.
2. Consider praying fervently for our young people and remind them of your prayer through notes or words of encouragement.
3. Consider a way to bless a young person. Yes, I really mean a blessing. Those are powerful words and something to move
mountains.
4. Write a note of encouragement and send it.
My hope is that we become less afraid of our young people and more open to hearing how they, and you, can grow together in
faith and community. Maybe we will all grow and learn something.

Is March YOUR family’s
month to help for
worship? We have 27
families in our group
and 7 worship services
in March. If every family helps out just
once, every job should be filled with ease.
It would be awesome to come to church
every Sunday in March and see every spot
filled in. Please consider making this small
commitment to help our church run
smoothly on Sundays. We understand
everyone is busy, so if you can’t help out
this month please consider filling in a spot
during another month that works better for
your schedule. You can email the church,
sign in on the schedule in the narthex, or
sign up on our website: www.sslcmn.org
under the stewardship tab. Thanks!

A Note About Lent:
Each year parents ask us about their
student’s role during the season of Lent.
Are they required to attend?
Is there any expectation of them participating etc.
How will you know they are there?
The answer to all of those questions is yes. Lent is a great time to learn,
and grow together in faith and community. We do that by
engaging the mission and ministry of the church by “being” the church
during this season. You are invited to be a part of that.
Students are asked to step out of their comfort zones and help to lead
worship during this time. We ask them to be brave, be uncomfortable,
and walk a path with us all during Lent. If your child is deeply
uncomfortable with a task, consider asking them to give it a try. Maybe
you, as a parent, would be willing to aid in the process of doing
something new. Who knows, we all might step into new places and
roles in ministry. We ask that students check in with their mentors each
week, and share something about their week. They are
invited to share a high and low, or a blessing in their week. Maybe this
is a chance for you to get to know their mentor! Consider Lent a journey
together, and take an opportunity to be stretched.
You are all welcome here!

PATHFINDERS 2.0 HAS STARTED!
INTERESTED IN JOINING SSLC? NOT SURE BUT WANT TO FIND OUT MORE? ALREADY A MEMBER AND WANT TO LEARN
MORE ABOUT THE BIBLE, CHRISTIANITY, AND ITS LUTHERAN EXPRESSION?
Pathfinders is our renewal and preparation learning,
growth, and discipleship ministry.
It is for anyone preparing for baptism, membership, and/or marriage at SSLC.
But it is also for anyone who wants to learn more, to be renewed both in knowledge and practice.
If this describes you, a friend, or a family member in any way, please be in touch with Pastor Mike. Or, check out our webpage on Pathfinders at
www.sslcmn.org/pathfinders.html. THIS YEAR, WE WILL BE ADDING A
COMPONENT OF “SPONSORSHIP” FOR OUR NEW MEMBER PATHFINDERS. This means we will need current members to be those shepherds. This might include attending Pathfinders with your
new members; connecting with them socially apart from church;
holding them in prayer; and just generally being a familiar face to them at the church. If this could be you, please contact Pastor Mike. This could be a really, really rewarding mission and ministry for you!

PLACE OF HOPE
Many people and families lives
have been broken and
fragmented. Drug and Alcohol
addiction, abuse, homelessness,
and life controlling problems have
taken their toll. Jesus Christ can
bring hope to rebuild, repair, and
restore lives.
Isaiah 58 "Isn't this the fast...to
feed those who are hungry, clothe
those who are naked, and shelter
the wanderer...those from among
you shall rebuild the old waste
places; You shall raise up the
foundations of many generations;
and you shall be called the repair-
er of the breach, the restorer of
streets to dwell in."
Our vision is RESTORATION.
Our mission is BRINGING HOPE.

just like families and
businesses. When church
members agree to an
automatic payment
arrangement, we can better

your giving and promised
contributions are taken care
of for you automatically

“Teaching the Word, Reaching the World”
WORSHIP SCHEDULE
Worship Sundays at 8 am & 10:30 am
Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Holy Communion offered every Sunday/Wednesday
Office Hours Monday - Thursday 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
We are a congregation whose core values seek changed lives
through the power of the Holy Spirit by forming
and sustaining life-long personal faith in God through Christ
Jesus. We practice this by engaging in cross-
generational ministry and radical hospitality as it is
revealed by God’s Word. We do this by connecting with our
congregation, the community and the world.
Undy Sunday!
Yep, it is as weird as it sounds!
While in recent conversations with local food and clothing organizations we have been
made aware of an odd, often overlooked, need within the homeless population.
Imagine living on the streets for just a second. Typically a person can wear shirts,
pants, and outerwear several days without thinking much of it. However, underwear
and socks are not something a person wants to wear with any longevity. The reality is
that most people wear them for a period, and toss them. Carry around dirty skivvies is not a desirable thing.
People living on the streets often find themselves in rather odd predicaments.
Underwear, and socks are not really items that people think to donate to local shelters.
That being said SSLC has been asked to do our part. We will be collecting NEW underwear, and socks throughout
March and culminating on our delivery to local shelters on Sunday, April 10th. Please consider bringing
the following:
Young Boys and Girls: Boxers, Briefs, Panties, socks. All sizes.
Adult Male and Female: Boxers, Briefs, Panties, socks. All sizes.
Please leave all tags on underwear, and packing on all products. If you wish to donate cash, please leave in an
envelope with Jeremy and we will purchase ahead of the event.
