INTRODUCTION OF BOKSBURG PARKRUN

Parkrun is excited to announce that the Boksburg parkrun has been approved

and will launch on 16th May 2015.

What is parkrun?

Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are

open to everyone, are free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and people of

every ability are encouraged to take part; from those taking their first steps

in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we

welcome you all.

BAC member, Frank da Ascencao, is closely involved in bringing this concept

to Boksburg. A lot of work is happening behind the scenes to make the first

run successful.

In preparation for the official start in May, a “dress rehearsal” of this parkrun

will take place on the 11th April at 8am at the Boksburg City Stadium. You

and your family and friends are all invited to join the parkrun team on this

day. It will be used to assess any problems that may arise.

If you aren’t up to running on 11 April, the parkrun team would appreciate

any volunteers to help at the event. Please email Frank on frank.da-

[email protected], for more details.

BOKSBURG ATHLETIC CLUB: TOP TEN LOG

(RACE AND TIME TRIALS)

(See attached Spreadsheet)

How the Top Ten Works

The TOP TEN is an ANNUAL LOG of the Top Ten athletes over various distances from our 2km

time trial right up to Marathon, Ultra and Comrades Distance. The log runs from 1 November 2014

until 31 October 2015. It is a monthly roll over. It is not the Top Ten club members’ best results per

month. This is done in order to give us an overall annual “feel” of who our top athletes are for the

year. As time trial results and race results are made available, the log is altered as soon as

possible per week, and month. Please note only our club time trial results are officially recorded on

the Top Ten. If you run a personal best but are not on the Top Ten list, you need to look at the

competition in that distance, the times listed and aim towards that, should you wish to be on the

log. If your best result appears on the Top Ten it will remain there from month to month as a roll

over until another athlete betters the time. You may move down or be kicked off. Therefore at

times it may seem stagnant; however, there are always one or two sneaky changes you may not

be seeing. So please bear in mind it is not based on February only being February, those top

results have rolled over from January or even December and continue to roll over into March and

only better times or results may replace someone previously. As we are all human and we are

dealing with a large number of athletes and often 4 road races a weekend, to define the log takes

juggling. Now and then we may miss a good result. PLEASE feel free to contact the office to

advise us of your achievements if we have overlooked you.

These articles appeared in the third newsletter of Boksburg Athletic Club, dated February, 1978.

This week we remember Jimmy Perkins who passed away 8 years ago.

Jimmy was one of the club’s icon’s who will always be very fondly remembered for his fantastic sense of humour and his huge contribution to the club’s spirit and camaraderieship. It is hard to imagine anyone who loved running more than Jimmy. He probably participated in more club training runs and Blitzes than anyone else in the club’s history. Our thoughts are with Caroll, Dale and Russell at this time.

BOKSBURG ATHLETIC CLUB - NEWSLETTER By James Perkins . . . . . . . . “PLEASE PASS – RUNNING IN”! A couple of years ago I was the first to scoff at anyone who ran more than a mile and enjoyed it. What was their aim? . . . . . I now have the answer . . . . . . . . It all began, I suppose, after the 1976 Christmas Season. It was back to work after a testing couple of weeks when beer began to taste like “double thick” malted milks and cigarettes and cigars became substitutes for nourishing meals. I was always late for work owing to the extra toiletries to be done at first light. Apart from shaving my face I had to run a razor a couple of times over my tongue to remove the fur which had developed overnight and which would have done a Persian Cat proud. My forefingers had to be scrubbed almost to the bone to remove nicotine stains. They were beautifully bronzed and almost looked as though they had been on annual vacation without me. Tying my shoelaces took an extra three minutes as this now had to be done in stages owing to the extra weight I was carrying around my middle and my breathing had become as irregular as my visits to the ablution block. My stomach and chest pains had disappeared over Christmas – anaethetised by the “good – stuff” – but were now slowly creeping back. The start of an ulcer perhaps? Or maybe tension? . . . . . . Who knows - - - - the Doctor didn’t. I had now suffered with these pains for a couple of years and the only relief was

brought about by consuming a couple of beers every evening after work. What a way to live for the rest of my life. It was one evening, early January 1977, I decided to survey the back garden and say hello to the canine Perkins’. Still conscious of the nagging pain in the pit of my stomach I decided that “Sheeba” was overweight and needed some exercise. I started jogging (the beginning of my career and how dramatic) around the peach trees to the East and back around the “late” Acacia tree (died April, 1977 owing to over-fertilization and now used – stump only – as a watering point for finches, mossies and torries). Twenty laps of this circuit and I was juffing and puffing and . . . . . minus my pain. I had literally stumbled upon the ultimate cure. I now know how Fleming must have felt when he discovered penicillin. “Sheeba” and I continued our secret training runs every evening and after a couple of weeks I felt I was ready for the road. My running attire consisted of an old vest which I sometimes slept in, my blue “pants” swimming costume and running shoes I used to wear when I went “jolling” in my blue jeans. Soon I was running 2K every second morning before work. No ways could I run every day – I just didn’t have the energy. I hated every stride but knew that I had to do it to take care of the pain which was now on the wane. I so enjoyed the showers after each run and after a couple of weeks used to look forward to the time when I could put my running shoes on. I had noticed that my muscles were firming up although there was no apparent loss of weight at that stage. It was mid-February when I was taken through the 2k barrier by my neighbor, Lennie Morris, who was at the stage running fairly regular 10 milers with the B.A.C. boys. We did a 7K run which ended up with me having cramp in both legs in the Parkrand Café. It was well worth it – I felt like Phidippides. I was soon running 8K’s about four or five times a week and was now sporting blue and white running shorts which Bob Mark (Hammil Bros.) had sold to me with jeers being the only discount for cash. The running bag was beginning to bite and I was really getting interested. I had cut my smokes down to seven per day, a couple of beers on the weekend only and had now long forgotten my stomach pain. I was asked to be a co-second in the Springs Striders 32Km. race which I found most exhilarating and within a few more weeks – like a dream come true – I was training with the big guns – Messrs. Malone, de Bod, Ewart, Greyling, etc., on Saturday mornings. A great honour was soon to be bestowed upon me – Steve de Bod asked me to join the Club and I became a B.A.C. member in April – soon to run my first Bloodhill Blitz in just over 40 mins. The month of May saw me coincidentally on leave at the South Coast at the same time as Steve de Bod and family. Guess what we did when the fish weren’t biting? Regular 9 milers of course before breakfast – Shelley Beach to Margate and back. I hardly slept the night before my first race in a Boksburg hooped vest. It was the 19th June and the Balfour/Maccabi 16K. I was a nervous as a kitten but ended up having a fairly good run with Ben Greyling who encouraged me all the way. I received further other encouragements in the pub after the run by Messrs. Ewart, Malone, Gore and Morris and realized than what a great bunch the B.A.C. boys were. It was after the Frankenwald 25K race that I lit up a smoke in front of Tommy Malone. If dirty looks could kill I would have been struck down there and then by our Chairman who appeared utterly disgusted that I should still be smoking even if it were seven per day. Needless to say, that was my last cigarette (11,50 a.m. on Sunday, July 24th, 1977). Two weeks later I cut almost two minutes off my best Bloodhill Blitz time to 33 mins., 55 sec. and can now confidently say that running and smoking do not go together. The excitement of my first marathon was soon upon me and here I owe a lot to the men mentioned previously in the article who put me in the right frame of mind. Tuesday and Thursday nights were spent looking at the heels of Steve and Alan as they pounded their way through fast 10-mile training runs whilst on Saturday morning we were paced by Cassius (de Bod’s boxer dog) who took us on 6-mile cross-country runs through the veld in Sunward Park. I finished the Golden Reef Marathon in 3 hours, 24 mins and make no mistake I felt like a million bucks. At this stage, just for the record, we had run eight consecutive Sunday 20-milers prior to the marathon and I had brought my weight down from 182 lbs. (January 1977) to 159 lbs. (September 1977).

What a change in my life this road running has brought about and what a tremendous amount of good B.A.C. had done for me and others. A year ago I would never have dreamt of waking at 5,00 a.m. to run nine miles every morning before work with Cecil Gore and Co. I appreciate the encouragement now given by my wife, Carol, whose only real complaints have been:-

(a) Smelly running shoes under bed. (b) Bathroom floor near shower perpetually wet. (c) Ten to 14 T-Shirts extra a week to be washed and ironed. (d) Always asleep in front of T.V. (e) Bloodhill Blitz now been run in 3 ½ hours.

Carol has now really taken an interest and apart from doing a bit of jogging herself – insists that I strive to run the 1978 Comrades and who knows, with a little bit of luck, I may just try.
