About Our TerroirThe term “appellation” simply means name, or designation. It’s commonly applied in wine-growing regions to identify the grape’s region of origin. When you’re renowned for making terroir wines it’s important that the birthplace be noted. We want you to know exactly where in Niagara-on-the-Lake your wine was grown.

Within the Niagara Peninsula viticultural (grape-growing) area, Niagara-on-the-Lake is classified by VQA Ontario (Vintners Quality Alliance Ontario) as a distinct area. Bordered by the Niagara Escarpment, Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, our wineries share a climate moderated by the Escarpment and Lake Ontario. Yet across this expanse of land, our wineries are differentiated by geology, soils, elevation, temperature and precipitation, creating four distinct growing areas, or sub-appellations.

NL Niagara Lakeshore Vineyards receive abundant sunlight and temperatures are moderated by lake breezes. Sandy soils provide good drainage and the grapes produce full-bodied, flavourful wines.

FM Four Mile Creek The largest of the four sub-appellations, the area lies below the Escarpment stretching into a fertile plain. Red shale soils contain silt and clay and are optimal for growing many varietals.

SB St. David’s Bench This area, carved by glaciers to form a natural bench below the Escarpment, has natural frost protection. Vineyards are planted on gentle slopes for good drainage in the rich clay soils.

NR Niagara River The Niagara Parkway winds along this narrow band bordering the Niagara River. Vines dig deep into the sandy soils and air currents moderate temperatures.

WINERY AMENITIESWINERY HOURS: Unless otherwise noted, wineries are open seven days a week, year round and are closed on New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day. Many wineries change their hours seasonally, so please refer to listings.

WINERY TOURS: Most of our wineries offer tours but many require reservations and some also offer private or group tours by appointment. Please refer to individual listings for tour times and costs.
