Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?

From Father Zywan . . . The Gift of Heart and Hands The Church, rooted in Jesus, is built-up with the love and service of God’s people. This truth is real in every age and generation. I recognize that this point is especially applicable now in our time when

the gifts of the laity are needed more than ever. Cindy Cusic Micco, who was an employee of Saint Alphonsus for the past six years, has accepted another position apart from our parish grouping. Though not in Wexford, she will continue to use her gifts at the service of the Church. At Saint Alphonsus Cindy served as Director of Communications and Office Manager to Fr. Kevin. Besides holding those positions, she also served in helping make possible the immense task of transitioning from two offices to one location which is now housed at Saint Alexis. We are also grateful to Cindy for her presence and service in our community. Now we wish her the best in her new position in the Butler community. I am sure she will continue to use her skills in making a difference in the Church in transition as part of the ON MISSION for the CHURCH ALIVE! We are thankful to Cindy for the difference she has made in our community touching the lives of many. We wish her all the best in serving in another portion of God’s vineyard. Cindy, may you know that much love and the continued prayers of many go with you. We wish you all the best in what lies ahead in your career of love and service.

Communication Update In our efforts to continue to unify and build the Catholic Community of Wexford, efforts are being made to provide a singular bulletin which shares the information of Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis parishes. Besides following the helpful “blue prints” of the diocese concerning On Mission for the Church Alive!, many parishioners have made this suggestion to unify our parish bulletins for the convenience of all. We ask your patience as this process continues to evolve. It is our intention to use the weekly newsletter (bulletin) to most effectively communicate information pertaining to the Wexford Catholic Community to parishioners and guests alike. Thank you for patience in this process. Similarly, work is already taking place to provide a unified website that will provide a singular source of information to the community. In the spirit of the On Mission Initiative, we are determined to serve the community in all ways the best we can. These two projects reflect our committed service to all who are actively engaged in our community and active seekers alike. Thank you for your prayers and God’s blessings…

Thank You for Your Generosity “Thank you for welcoming the Little Sisters of the Poor into your parish for our collection! We enjoyed meeting with your parishioners and appreciate their generosity. Without your help we would not be able to welcome the elderly poor

into our Home and provide them with the compassionate care they truly deserve. We are pleased to share that our collection totaled $7,086.43! Your parish’s warm and generous support of the Little Sisters of the Poor certainly embodies the virtue of Mercy toward the elderly population living at our Home. With your help we are able to provide housing, food, healthcare, security, and most importantly, unconditional love for our Residents. Please convey our sincere gratitude to everyone at your parish for partnering with us in this mission!” Sincerely, Sister Margaret Mary, l.s.p.

Ash Wednesday & Lenten Devotions The Lenten season begins this Wednesday, March 6, with Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed during the four Masses that are scheduled in the Wexford Catholic community that day. They are as follows:

Ash Wednesday 7:00 a.m. Mass Saint Alphonsus Church 9:00 a.m. School Mass Saint Alphonsus Church 12:00 p.m. Mass Saint Alphonsus Church 7:00 p.m. Mass Saint Alexis Church

Please note both the times and locations.

The Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross will be celebrated at both worship sites on Fridays during Lent:

2:00 p.m. with school children Saint Alphonsus Church

7:00 p.m. Saint Alexis Church The decision to hold Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings at Saint Alexis was made in conjunction with Pastoral Council. Acknowledging the limited parking at Saint Alphonsus due to the annual Fish Fry it was determined that this decision would best serve our grouping. Thank you for your understanding. We can make this work. Just keep focused on Jesus and appreciate the opportunities that are ours.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT: Catholics in the United States age 14 and older (with no maximum age) are obliged to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY (March 6), the FRIDAYS OF LENT and GOOD FRIDAY (April 19). Church law forbids the use of meat but does not prohibit eggs, milk products or condiments made with animal fat.

FASTING: Catholics in the United States, from the

day after their 18th birthday until the day after their 59th birthday, are obliged to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY. Church law allows for only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit the taking of some food in the morning and evening. The combined quantity of the two meals should not exceed the quantity eaten at the full meal. The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break the fast.

Note: People taking medications or with health concerns should follow their doctor’s advice on fasting. Catholics are also reminded they should fast from solid food one hour before receiving the Eucharist. PRAYER AND ALMSGIVING: Abstinence and fasting

should lead Catholics to a deeper prayer life. Almsgiving provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding and response to the needs of

others – particularly the poor.

Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis News

Want to grow in prayer? Just pray! By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization

Possibly the most important aspect of trying to grow in prayer is what St. Teresa of Avila called "an earnest and most determined resolve not to halt." I believe that God desires each and every one of us to have a profoundly deep prayer life. This means He will give us what we need to advance farther and farther into this beautiful mystery. What is our part? To resolve to pray each and every single day. In order to let God lead us into His heart we need only to put some time aside each day that is strictly His. You must adopt a strict diligence of prayer that cannot be sidetracked by anything. You might try to make a list of the things that have interrupted your prayer life in the past. Make a plan, make a schedule and pray every single day. The devil will do everything he can to interrupt this resolve and it is important that we recognize that and no matter what kind of sin we fall into we should still pray each and every day. It is not hypocrisy to pray in a state of sin. Instead it is the only sane thing to do. When you have offended the Lord it is then that you should run to Him all the more. The devil will also try to trick us into thinking the Lord is not listening to our prayer. In this moment we must remember that the primary objective of prayer is for us to listen and not just speak. We must also remember that God has promised He will always listen and answer our prayers although not always in the way we expect in the time we expect. The bottom line is that we could all be saints if only we prayed. Do not let anything get in the way of this and God will draw you in. He will speak to your heart. You will become whole in Him. He will set you afire. May the Lord draw you into His heart through our perseverance in prayer.

Lots of Volunteers Needed for Saint Alphonsus Fish Fry Our volunteers are the key to an incredible Fish Fry operation. Scores of volunteers prepare, cook and serve over 1,000 meals every Friday night in Lent. As our volunteers will tell you, working the Fish Fry is about fellowship – making new friends and reconnecting with old ones. We need volunteers to do everything from cutting up the fish to serving the meals to cleaning up the kitchen. Altogether, we need over 150 volunteers every Friday night as well as volunteers during the week. To see a list of volunteer job descriptions and time slots, please go to https://tinyurl.com/2019FishFry or call Saint Alphonsus parish office at 724.935.1151. We would love to have you join us!

Looking for Sponsors We need sponsors for our Fish Fry! Sponsors help defray costs for this major fundraiser that benefits the Saint Alphonsus Parish and Blessed Francis Seelos Academy. Please consider supporting the Fish Fry as a sponsor – you can sign up by going online to tinyurl.com/StAlFishFry19. Or you can fill out a paper form – copies are in the back of the church near the bulletins at Saint Alphonsus and in the Narthex of Saint Alexis. For more information: [email protected] or call LeeAnne Davison at 412.398.0123.

Please let Mrs. Heagy know you are ready to answer the call by contacting her at 724.538.5258 or [email protected] . Passion Play rehearsals are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the church until March 19 when rehearsals move to the Ryan Center. The play - “Make Us Believers” - will be performed on Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in the Ryan Center, which is adjacent to Blessed Francis Seelos Academy. No admission fee is charged; a freewill offering is appreciated.

A Royal Invitation for Women

Do you know that you are a daughter of the King? Sometimes the stresses of life cause us to forget

the gifts that come with such a title. The Emmaus weekend is about rediscovering those benefits of being a child of royalty. It is a time for reflecting, renewing, reconnecting, relaxing and rejoicing. It is an opportunity to build valuable relationships with other women, as we discover who we are and whose we are: a daughter of the most high. Come spend a weekend for an opportunity to encounter or rediscover Jesus in your life. The retreat is led by lay women who found Emmaus to be a life changing experience. The retreat is being held at the Kearns Spirituality Center in Allison Park from April 26th through April 28th, 2019. To register or for more information, contact Jodie at 412.429.1573.

Baptism Preparation Class Infant Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. at Saint Alexis and at 12:45 p.m. at Saint Alphonsus by

appointment only. Expectant parents need to attend a preparation class. The next Baptism preparation class at Saint Alexis will be held on Thursday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Wright Room of the Parish Center. Please register by going online to stalexis.org. Our next class at Saint Alphonsus will be April 8 at 4:45 p.m. To reserve a spot for this class, call Louis Bosco at 724.935.1160. Every Tree Is Known By Its Own Fruit In grade school catechism class you may have been asked to learn and memorize the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, long-suffering, modesty and chastity. These 12 attributes are the means by which we come to understand how an individual is living in accord with the Holy Spirit. They are the work of God’s grace in our lives and the result of us tending to our hearts, making them fertile soil for the love of God to take root so that only good fruit can grow. Like any agricultural image that we use for faith, the Fruit of the Spirit requires both hard work and trust. A farmer works hard to till, plant, weed out and tend to his crops in order to reap a bountiful harvest. Yet, he also has to trust that the sun and rain will come in the necessary proportions to nourish what he has worked so hard to plant. For us, we have to work hard to weed out anything which seeks to harden our hearts or set up resistance to the work of the Spirit. Then, we must trust the ways in which the Spirit is at work to bear abundant good fruit in and through us. Nurturing the Fruit of the Spirit works for our good, the good of others and the good of the Church as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

When Is First Reconciliation and First Communion? Our second graders who are making their First Reconciliation and First Communion have the option of participating in ceremonies at either Saint Alphonsus or Saint Alexis.

For information, contact Louis Bosco at [email protected]

Alex Brown chosen as Shakespeare Contest Finalist In February, sixteen Blessed Francis Seelos Academy students had the opportunity to take the stage and experience the excitement of performing live at Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest. More than 1,000 area students form 80 schools competed in the 25th Annual Contest. Teams of judges evaluated each participant. Blessed Francis Seelos Academy seventh grader Alex Brown was one of five students chosen as a finalist in the Monologues Lower Division (grades 4-7) category. He performed as Antony from Julius Cesar. This was Alex’s first year participating in the competition. Eighth graders Bella White, Lauren Rajasenan, and Caroline Marschke received an Honorable Mention in the Upper Scene (grades 8-12) category. They performed as Dromio, Luciana, and Adriana from Comedy of Errors.

Leading up to the live performances, Pittsburgh Public Theater coaches came to Seelos Academy and worked with students on interpreting their monologue or scene, blocking, and adding props to help bring their scene to life.

Science Fair Recently, six students from Blessed Francis Seelos Academy competed at the Covestro Science Fair held at Heinz Field. Out of 1,100 participating students, 7th grader Haley Baranoswki won "Outstanding Female Biologist" for her project "How Safe is My Yoga Mat?" She won a medal, a certificate, and a monetary award. Michael Gill, also in seventh grade, won a monetary award for his engineering project "Does Bridge Design Affect Weight Bearing Capacity?" Other outstanding students that participated were McKenney Martha, Meredith McCalmont, Lauren Rajesenan, and Connor Walker. We are very proud of your efforts and hard work!   Pictured are: Emma McCosby, Hayley Baranowski, McKenney Martha, Anastasia Davis and Dr. David Blozowich

Pre-School Visit Fr. Joe visited Blessed Francis Seelos Academy Early Childhood Center in February as part of one of their “Community Helpers” lessons. He talked with the preschoolers about his life as a Priest, about Church, and about Prayer. The children enjoyed learning how he helps people in the community.
