Please note – school admissions are handled centrally by Lincolnshire County Council; having a

place at Kelsey Little Stars Pre-School does NOT automatically guarantee a place at Kelsey Primary

School, you must still apply for a reception place through Lincolnshire County Council.

Curriculum

Our curriculum fully meets the requirements of the national curriculum. But it has also been designed to do two things that are not always found in primary schools: The role of skills Given the pace of technological advancement in our world – it is very difficult to predict what the working world will be like for our children, but one thing is certain: it will be very different from today’s world. Compulsory education in the United Kingdom lasts 14 years (from age 4 to 18). Consider what the world was like in 1999? (Children born in 1999, will be 18 in 2017). We seek to embed skills that will last our children a lifetime as they progress through education and different careers. Such as:

Managing Information,

Thinking,

Problem Solving and Decision Making,

Being Creative,

Working with Others,

Self-Management,

Initiative & Enterprise.

Core Values

Our core values this year are responsibility, determination and respect. Our curriculum and assemblies will focus on these values as we aim to instil them in our pupils.

This year, we have begun to unpick what they mean and how we can develop these qualities inside and outside of school.

The Foundation Stage (Pre-School and Reception)

We recognise this and ensure that the children in our care are catered for at their level and with their individual needs having the highest priority. These are based on six areas; communication and literacy, mathematical development, creative development, physical development, knowledge and understanding of the world and personal, social and emotional development. Learning is fun and play is an integral part of the process. We are very lucky to have a large classroom and outdoor area which are organised to ensure that they support different types of learning such as messy play, role play, construction and creative activities. We also have dedicated reading and maths areas.

Our days are structured with group learning activities which take place on the carpet, small group targeted learning activites that take place at the learning table in the morning and one to one reading sessions and story time that take place in the afternoon. We also enjoy morning and afternoon snack and break times on the big playground!

We love to spend time outdoors and access our outdoor area all year round so please ensure that you send your child with appropriate clothing for the weather conditions.

English – speaking and listening, reading, writing and phonics Speaking and Listening Speaking and Listening is an essential part of literacy. Good oral work supports a children’s understanding of language. Every opportunity is presented for the children to develop their speaking and listening skills and enhance their confidence. Reading We believe pupils’ interest and confidence in reading develops as they learn to read independently and experience a range of texts. We have a wide range of books, carefully selected and regularly updated, to enhance pupils’ reading skills. Our Library provides children with a stimulating and resourceful environment to encourage them to develop independence, interest and enjoyment of books. Those who read succeed! – reading for pleasure can add almost 6 months to a pupil’s academic progress over their time in primary school. We expect pupils to read 5 times at home each week and those children are rewarded each term with activities of their choice in class. Writing A child’s ability to communicate in writing affects their performance in all other areas of the curriculum. Writing is a developmental process. We value the importance of encouraging pupils to write independently from Reception onwards. We aim to encourage pupils to view writing as both essential to their thinking and learning, and as an enjoyable method of self-expression.

Mathematics We place great emphasis on mental maths skills and times tables. Numeracy is a key life skill and it is important for us to foster an excitement and enjoyment of mathematics. The emphasis is on acquiring skills and knowledge that enable our pupils to develop as lively, independent thinkers. Mathematics is also developed through other subjects, for example, during scientific investigations. Whilst in the Foundation Stage of their curriculum, children will experience a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills including counting, sorting, matching, seeking patterns and working with numbers, shape, space and measures. Science Science is an integral part of modern culture. The challenges of science are enormous and through them we aim to stretch the imagination and creativity of our children. Through teaching that links direct practical experience with ideas, our Science enriches the learning of children at all levels. The children have opportunities to experiment and investigate. The gaining of skills in scientific method and the developing and evaluating of their findings helps our children develop in critical and creative thought.

Computing The use of computers is a vital element in a rapidly changing world in which most activities, and notably work, are being increasingly transformed. All children will have access to iPads / touch-screen tablets. Access to the Internet is safeguarded as our school is part of the Lincolnshire Net-Link system and all networked computers to the outside world through a centrally controlled intranet. Design and Technology Design and Technology describes a way of working in which pupils investigate a need or respond to an opportunity to make or modify something. Our aim is to develop in children an understanding of how technologists design and make things that work and to provide opportunities for designing and making things themselves. This way we aim to build confidence in working with tools and equipment.

The Humanities Religious Education Religious education makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of religions and their influence on individuals, communities and cultures. It enables pupils to consider and respond to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.

Our RE lessons are enriched by visits and guest speakers from a variety of faiths including: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. The children relish this opportunity to understand different faiths and cultures in the world. Geography Geography introduces our children to knowledge of the world, its natural systems and climate, other countries and cultures. We put great emphasis on mapwork and local studies as part of this. As our children study geography, they are helped to realise how nations rely on each other and they can be inspired to think about their own place in the world, their values, their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment. History Our aim is to develop pupils’ curiosity in history by introducing them to the past and considering how the past influences the present. We study a variety of topics to bring alive the past and challenge its interpretation. Recent history topics have included World War Two and a visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, The Victorians and The Vikings. Other topics include the Industrial Revolution and the history of the British Empire. Modern Foreign Languages The study of foreign languages is vital to success in the modern multi-cultural world. Recently we have taught KS2 children French. Art Our aim is to encourage children to develop ideas and to enable them to have the means of expressing them, while deriving enjoyment from Art and gaining an understanding of art history and different styles.

Music We aim to help each child to enjoy and appreciate a wide range of musical styles. We are able to offer tuition on piano/keyboard and guitar for a weekly charge. Also there are opportunities for children to learn to play the recorder. We enter our children into local and regional music festivals such as Brigg Music Festival and Middle Rasen Recorder Festival.

Physical Education The main aims behind physical education lessons at Kelsey are to ensure that the children recognise the importance of fitness, health and of course, enjoyment. All children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have swimming lessons during each academic year. We regularly take children on sporting visits. Activities have included hockey, tag rugby and cricket.

Personal, social and health education (PSHE) All aspects of the PSHE curriculum are covered through the teaching of other subjects. We pay particular emphasis to healthy eating and the importance of exercise.

Extra curricular clubs and activities We are proud of our provision of after school and lunchtime clubs, which vary from year to year. In the past we have provided: This year we have provided clubs such as: football, dodgeball, dance, lego, art and craft, netball, and multi-skills.

Provision for more able children

The needs of children who are identified as being more able are recognised and they are placed on a ‘Gifted and Talented’ register; it is policy of this school to respond to the needs of such children. We seek to meet the needs of these children by enriching and extending the school curriculum where appropriate. Transfer to Secondary Schools We maintain strong links with all local secondary schools. Visits are arranged by staff for pupils to attend induction and activity days. The children also receive visits from teachers of Year 7 pupils during the spring and summer terms. We ensure that the transition from primary to secondary is as smooth as possible.

Charges for School Activities The admission of a child to North Kelsey Primary School and the formal Curriculum offered to a registered pupil is not subject to charge or the parents’ willingness to make a voluntary contribution. We to see the curriculum enriched as far as possible for the benefit of all pupils. They recognise that whatever public funds are available they will never be sufficient to fund all desirable activities at the required level. The school reserves the right to: 1. Charge parents for activities offered as optional extras, wholly or mainly outside school hours.

2. Seek voluntary contributions from the parents to fund activities, either within or outside school hours and

occasionally to provide some incidentals.

3. Draw to the attention of parents, activities organised by a third party, thereby giving parents the opportunity to request leave of absence for their children to take part should the activity take place during the school day. In these circumstances a charge may well be levied by the third party.

4. Charge parents at cost, or in kind, for materials if parents wish to own a finished product.

5. Reclaim from parents the cost of willful breakages or damage of lost equipment.

6. Charge for board and lodging on residential visits. Parents of children receiving income-based jobseeker’s allowance or income support are entitled to claim remission for charges as detailed above.
