Three dots, three dashes, three dots. SOS ( Save Our Souls),one of the best known signals in the world.

Its inventor was Samuel Morse.

Whats signaling used for?

? Transfer of control- and status information between telecom nodes (switches), terminals (phones) and users.

? Control information consists of:– Connect/Disconnect of phone calls– Handling of mobility (in mobile networks)– Charging/Billing– Handling of intelligent network-based services– Service like ”A-number presentation” and ”call completion”

? Status information is used for:– Rerouting of signaling– Ensure highest possible security, availability and performance

TietoEnator presentation

Signaling System No.7 (SS7)

? “Nervous system” of fixed & mobile telecom networks

? International standard since 1980 (ITU)

? Separate signaling from data/speech connections

? Provides fast call establishment

? High throughput, reliability and capacity

? Provides flexibility in network design

? Prevents from fraud

? Enable new services (e.g. IN and GSM/UMTS)

TietoEnator TietoEnator©2002

SS7 Technology

? Built according to a standardized layered model

? Layers are combined to provide wanted service

? Each layer hosts a so called Protocol

? Basically three different standards:– ITU (Europe, Asia)– ANSI (North America)– TTC (Japan)

TietoEnator in Karlstad

? Develops software for signaling– Full assortment of protocols for all international standards– Unique platform independent architecture– Component-based– “Re-usable” software

? Develops hardware for signaling– Unique “In Service Reconfigurable” architecture– Very high capacity/density

? Our signaling is used in most Ericsson products– 3G products are depending on our SW & HW

TE Signaling Solutions are found ”everywhere”

? Our solutions are part of many telecom vendor’s products:– Unisys (voice mail)– Bull/Integris (voice mail)– Cellpoint (positioning)– Sonera SmartTrust (SIM-card solutions)– Incomit (service platform)– Envilogg (call center)

? Ericsson’s network nodes/products– GSM– GPRS– 3G/WCDMA– Prepaid– Positioning– MMS

Today´s trends

? Unbundling Services from Networks

? Seamless services increasingly important

? IP-based Transport/Connectivity layer

? Service support for multi-media

? Allow for third-party service provisioning

? Open service creation & execution environment based on high-level APIs towards the network

TietoEnator presentation

TietoEnator TietoEnator©2002

Signaling evolution

? Separation of signaling and connectivity/transport

? Signaling carried over different transport types:– STM– ATM– IP

? Same or better QoS as today's SS7 signaling

? New protocols to support multimedia– SIP/SDP

? Convergence solutions needed (i.e. gateways)

? High level APIs required for services– JAIN– Parlay
