Greenwich Junior League: Enchanted Forest

__ NOVEMBER

The Enchanted Forest of the Junior League of Greenwichis a festive weekend that is not to be missed! The event includes long-standing traditions such as decorated treesand gingerbread houses to bid on, gingerbread workshops,a playland, Santa’s workshop, a holiday boutique, break-fast with Santa, and a cocktail party with silent auctionand dancing. Greenwich Boat Show __ APRIL

The Greenwich Boat Show features today’s finest boatbrands for fishing, luxury, power, sport, and cruiser boats.The show is free to attend and there is no charge for sea-trials. This show is held in April on site of BeaconPoint Marine and Greenwich Water Club at 49 River

Art to the Avenue, Greenwich __ MAY

Musicians and performers fill the streets each May. Storeshost receptions for the hundreds of visitors to previewover 150 artists. Greenwich Ave. is closed to traffic infront of the Arts Center and an area for children’s activi-ties. Greenwich Concours de’ Elegance __ JUNE

Held in June, the Greenwich Concours has two concourses back-to-back. The Concours Americana isexclusively for American makes, while the Concours International is exclusively for imported marques. FormerAmerica's Cup 12-Meter yachts are moored at the Delamar Hotel and also on display. Given good weather,they will engage in match racing during the weekend.Visitors will be able to view the yachts up close, and there are opportunities to sail on them. BABCOCK PRESERVEOpen year round, sunrise to sunset, this largest of the town parks stretches betweenNorth St. and Lake Ave. The Preserve is opento the public for hiking, walking, jogging,cross-country skiing, nature study, picnicking, and horseback riding on designated trails.Camping without permission and use of trail bikes are prohibited. Directions - US 1 to North Maple Ave. toNorth St. Continue on North St. past North St.School on left. Continue approx. 2 more miles,entrance on left just past the reservoir.

BINNEY PARKLocated in Old Greenwich, this park is comprised of a landscaped section with pond, trees, paved paths,and a section with four tennis courts, two baseball diamonds, swings, and a sheltered playground. Directions - US 1 to Sound Beach Ave. Turn ontoSound Beach, go under I-95, continue about ¾ of a mile, keep right at rotary. Entrance next right onWesskum Wood Rd.

BRUCE PARKA series of ponds and wooded areas provide activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, and picnicking. Three tennis courts, horseshoe pits, a baseball diamond,and playgrounds are also available. Directions - I-95 South: Exit 4, left onto Indian Field Rd., right onto Bruce Park Dr. I-95 North: Exit 3, right onto Arch St. to Museum Dr., left onto Davis Ave.

CHRISTIANO PARKSituated on five acres reached by Recycling Lane and Lyons Ave., it was for manyyears the Town Dump. In the early 50's, farsighted planners began covering the areawith landfill, and in the 60's added two tennis courts, a baseball diamond, barbecuegrills, children's playground equipment, and even a cricket pitch. Directions - Follow Field Point Rd. to traffic light at intersection with Railroad Ave.Make right turn onto RR Ave., follow rd. until intersection with St. Roch’s Ave. Makeright hand turn, follow road to third left hand turn onto Lyon Ave. Park at end of street.

Greenwich Point Open daily from 6:00 am until sunset. Activitiesinclude jogging, walking, cycling, nature study,boating, fishing, sailboarding, sun bathing, swim-ming, and picnicking.

Byram Beach & Pool Open daily 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. The park hasthe only public pool in town, lighted tenniscourts, and lighted ball field. Call 203-861-3170for hours of operation and special swim times.

Great Captain’s Island This island includes an active recreation area, anatural and a managed conservation area. It alsooffers a beach and boat mooring. During thesummer months, there is a Ferry Service fromRoger Sherman Baldwin Park.

Island Beach Formerly known as Little Captain Island, thisbeach is situated in Long Island Sound two milessouth of Greenwich Harbor. In summer months,there is a Ferry Service from Roger ShermanBaldwin Park.

Beaches are open year round, but passes are required from May 1 to Oct. 31. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day thru Labor Day from 10:00 a.m. to6:00 p.m. Leashed dogs are allowed into parks from Dec. 1 to March 31.

The Town of Greenwich Department of Health tests the beaches weekly during the swimming season. Visit www.greenwichct.org to find out if a beach is open or closed to swimming.

AUDUBON GREENWICHThis 285-acre sanctuary and center has trails, a lake, ponds, woodlands, meadows, the Byram River, exhibits, a learning center, arts gallery and gift shop. Programs include bird walks, workshops,guided hikes, kids' programs, festivals, camp andschool-related activities. Audubon Greenwich is located at 613 Riversville Rd. in Greenwich. COS COB MILL POND PARKCos Cob Mill Pond Park is located at the corner of Strickland Rd. and the Post Rd. in Cos Cob. The park is open to the public from 6 am to 8 pm. Contained in the park is a small cemetery est. in 1723.

GRASS ISLANDGrass Island is a tidal marsh area in Greenwich Harbor. This habitat is a fragile marsh ecosystem protected as a conservation area. The reed grass areais a shelter for wildlife. The tree/shrub border servesas a barrier between the developed area and thetidal marsh. Directions - Off of Shore Rd. in theBelle Haven, take Field Point Rd. across RR Ave. totraffic light, left under RR bridge onto Horseneck La.First right onto Shore Rd. Left turn into Grass Island.

HAVEMEYER FIELD & GREENWICH COMMONSThe Common is open to the public as is the Children’s playground and soccer field. The fenced area known as Havemeyer Field, behindTown Hall is maintained for competitive sports. Musicians and entertainers perform during the summer months. Holiday parades down GreenwichAve. often end here and other special events drawcrowds. Directions - Between Greenwich Ave. and Field Point Rd., behind Town Hall.

LADDINS ROCKThis Sanctuary is located in OldGreenwich. A pocket of wilder-ness features a great granite domewith a sheer 60-ft. drop on oneside. The balance of the propertyis a natural woodland with twosmall water courses betweenLaddins Rock and a wooded hillside. Directions - U.S. 1 toLaddins Rock Rd. Take the firstleft onto Midbrook Lane. Bear leftonto High Meadow Rd.

MIANUS RIVER & PARKLocated in North Cos Cob, thispark offers jogging, hiking, horse-back riding, fishing, and naturestudy. No picnicking or camping.Fishing only with State License.Directions - U.S. 1 to Stamfordleaving Cos Cob, go over MianusBridge, turn Left onto Cary Rd.Parking is off off Cognewaugh Rd.

MONTGOMERY PINETUM PARKArmed with map and tree guide from theGarden Center office, explore the Pinetumfrom the flagstone terrace where the vista tothe south of the manicured lawns ends at areflecting pond. In spring, the display oftulips, daffodils and early azaleas frames theview in glorious color. Also look for a trailsign for a short tree identification walkaround the perimeter of the pond andmeadow beyond. The park is open dailyfrom 8:00 am to sunset except Sundays Nov. 15 to March 15. Directions - U.S. 1heading for Stamford, in Cos Cob make leftonto Orchard St. then turn right onto BibleSt., entrance on left ½ mile after ball fields.

ROGER SHERMAN BALDWIN PARKA waterfront park along with a glorious view of Greenwich Harbor and Long Island Sound accessible to the public. The Park is devoted to grass lawns, shrubs,and trees. It is ideal for walking, fishing, nature study, and photography. People can picnic in the shade of weeping willows and watch the geese and other waterfowl. In the summer, the Park offersoutdoor concerts and theater productions.The Ferry Terminal, where tickets are sold in summer for rides to Island Beach andGreat Captain’s Island is also at this location.Directions - Turn left onto Soundview Drive.At bottom of hill make a right onto ArchStreet, go under railroad bridge and I-95Bridge. Take first right after traffic light after passing bridges.

SACHEM NATURE PRESERVEThis parcel of undeveloped land is charac-terized by a mature second growth forestof red maple, black cherry and white Ash,with shrubs and saplings. 1/3 of the Preserve is wetland, and floods duringheavy rains. A stream runs through theproperty, but is usually dry in the summer.Recreation is permitted for hiking, bird-watching, and photography. Directions -U.S. 1 toward Stamford, at traffic light turnright onto Indian Field Rd. (Milbrook GolfCourse) also on right, Sunoco gas on cor-ner. Proceed on Indian Field Rd. Turn ontoCross La. (Sachem Rd. intersects w/ CrossLa.) Parking for Preserve is on Sachem Rd.

SCHONGALLA NATURE PRESERVEThis area contains a mature, secondgrowth mixed forest composed of blackoak, American beech, red maple, blackcherry, white ash, and an understory of a variety of saplings, ivy, grapevines, andshrubs. The topography is uneven withlarge rock outcroppings and a small lakealong the eastern boundary. One massiveoverhanging rock and the cave beneathare known as Wolf Cave or Indian Cave.About half of the property is wetlands.Directions - U.S. 1 heading towards Stamford, in Riverside turn left onto No.Sound Beach Ave. Go ½ mile turn rightonto Sunshine Ave. Follow to stop sign,turn left onto Florence Rd. proceedstraight to MacArthur Dr. on right. Parking on both sides of Street.
