How Does My Body Respond to Stress?

• When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones

adrenaline cortisol

• These hormones get the body for emergency action.• Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure

rises, breath quickens, and your senses become sharper• These physical changes increase your strength and stamina,

speed your reaction time, and enhance your focus—preparing you to either fight or flee from the danger at hand.

Strategies for Stress• Start thinking about the future — be forward-thinking!• Reach out and confide in someone you trust.• Remember who you are. Don't allow others to affect how you

think about yourself.• Give yourself a break! Try some stress relieving • activities such as:

– Physical activity, drawing, watching TV, – reading, listening to music, hanging out with a friend, – playing with pets, or just lazing about.

• Don't worry — everyone feels stress to some degree. You are not alone. Although it may not feel like it, it will pass!
