WELCOME TO CUDAHY DAY CAMP!

It is so hard to believe that we are going in to our 7th year of summer camp, and yes, believe it or not, we have campers that have been with us every year!! Our Year 7 Campers are truly a special group of people as they stuck with us for the early “growing pains” of a new camp, but more importantly, they have helped shape the camp we are today!

Today, we are a camp that reaches more than 220 individual campers each sum-mer with a total of over 1,300 campers weeks. We see a staff retention rate of 80%, where the national average is 50% and we are so very fortunate to boast that 91% of our campers say they met new friends at camp, and 92% of campers (95% of parents) plan on returning this year!

The big news we have to share going into Camp 2020 is that our awesome Camp Director, Sam Sujecki, has taken a new position at the West Allis Rec Department, and we are so happy for him...we thank him for his years of service to Cudahy and wish him well.

We would like to welcome Allie Clark to her new position of Program Manager with Cudahy. Allie joins us from Greenfield Park and Rec and we know she will be a fantastic addition to our camp leadership team. We have fun new plans for this summer that we know the campers will love!

All of us at the Cudahy Rec Department look forward to another great summer with you and your families. Tina Kreitlow Director of Community Education and Recreation

DAY CAMP PHILOSOPHY

To create a unique atmosphere where our campers can develop their whole self.

Whether that means mastering a skill they work toward achieving, making new friends, becoming more social, developing greater

confidence, or even exploring their independ-ence, we help campers embark on their summer journey with a greater sense of

self-esteem and confidence!

We will foster the values of:

Integrity, Responsibility, Respect, Kindness and Courage!

CAMP ~ IN THE KNOW

ABOUT OUR STAFF

The greatest asset in any camp is not the facilities or the shiny new equipment, but rather its camp counselors. We take a great deal of pride in hand-picking some of the best staff around town to work with your children each summer. They have all been hired for the desire to have a positive impact on children through providing meaningful programs and new experiences that will allow your child to grow. Most importantly, they prioritize your child’s safety over anything else.

In addition to staff who have the right attitude, we give them a little extra support through worthwhile training prior to the start of camp. Some of the topics we cover include; child abuse training, emergency procedures, First Aid/CPR, behavior management, pool safety, health care and medication administration in camp, large group games, lesson planning and more.

One of the best parts of having a rec department affiliated with a school district is that we have access to some of the best professionals around to help support these training initiatives and that helps allow us to be consistent with the kids from the school year and throughout the summer!

CAMPER SUPERVISION

One of the important items to note, as a parent, when choosing the right camp for your child is the camper to counselor ratio. At the Cudahy Rec Department we pride ourselves on having a safer ratio than what the state requires for this type of child care program. Our general guidelines are as follows:

AGE COUNSELOR TO CAMPER 5 - 6 year olds 1 to 8 7 - 11 year olds 1 to 12 12 - 14 year olds 1 to 15

Our nurturing staff are trained to be sensitive and flexible to the many needs of our participants. We want every child to have a positive experience and take with them fond memories of camp that will last a lifetime.

SNACKS AND LUNCH (breakfast, too!)

Campers should bring lunch, afternoon snack and water bottle to camp daily. Please do not send soda for lunch.

The School District of Cudahy will be offering a FREE Grab and Go Breakfast for our campers each morning, if they are interested. Additionally, we will offer a FREE lunch program for campers, if interested. The dates for both free breakfast and lunch are listed below:

DISTRICT PROVIDED Breakfast and Lunch will be served June 17th - June 30th and July 1st - July 10th, excluding July 3rd and July 6th.

If your child is taking the FREE breakfast and/or lunch program, please still plan on sending an afternoon snack (or two - the kids get very hungry throughout the day with all of their activities) and a water bottle!

CAMP ~ IN THE KNOW

SUMMER SCHOOL WRAP-AROUND CARE

This year the School District of Cudahy will be offering elementary grade summer school at Cudahy Middle School, the same location as camp! Summer school for the middle school grades will continue to be offered at Cudahy High School.

For our younger campers who are in summer school, this will truly allow for an easy and seamless transition. We will monitor registration for our older campers to determine whether we will continue to get a bus or if we will be able to provide transportation with district vans. For this age group, we will adjust the price accord-ingly. The price on the registration form is reflective of needing a bus for transporta-tion. If that changes, we will let you know.

In both age groups, the summer school students who transition to camp will eat lunch with summer school and then join in camp for the remainder of the day. Please continue to pack a daily snack and swim attire. Field trips are scheduled in the afternoons during these weeks to accommodate for summer school transition.

Summer school families should also still note on their forms whether they will need early drop off care so we can plan staff accordingly.

SELF CARE

All campers must be able to provide self care within a group setting. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Being able to stay with the group

Using the restroom and washing hands without assistance

Eating lunch without assistance

Demonstrating good behavior and the ability to listen to and follow instructions throughout the day

Change for swimming unassisted

WEATHER

Camp is held rain or shine, hot or cold! In the event of extreme or inclement weather, campers will remain indoors. Staff will be prepared to run a variety of activities using the indoor spaces available.

SWIMMING / POOL TIME

All campers will swim daily, with the exception of field trip days. Please send a bathing suit and towel so they are prepared to swim.

The pool, on the shallow end, is 3 ft deep and, at the deep end, is 10 ft deep. In order for any camper to go into the deep end, they must pass a swim test administered by one of our certified lifeguards.

Floatation devices and toys will be availa-ble for campers, so please do not send any additional items.

During all swim times, there will be a minimum of two certified lifeguards on duty, and counselors are required to be in the water with the campers.

The Cudahy Rec Department takes pool and water safety extremely seriously and we do our best to insure a fun and safe experience for our campers!

Swim Lessons are also offered for an additional $20 fee each week. The swim lesson structure follows our regular lesson curriculum and benchmarks for progress. Should you child partake in the swim lessons during the camp day, it will not take away from their free swim time, but rather would be scheduled either prior to free swim or after their free swim time.

PHOTO POLICY

The Rec Department takes pictures of program participants for promotional materials, including the rec guide and Facebook. Please be sure to check the photo release box on the registration form so you can see your kids in sum-mer camp action on Facebook!

FACILITIES

Summer camp is held at Cudahy Mid-dle School. The middle school has fan-tastic indoor and outdoor spaces availa-ble that allow our campers to experi-ence an array of programs throughout their time with us. The outdoor space highlights a fenced-in green space and blacktop play area. A Gaga Ball Pit, pic-nic tables, and nine-square in the air have been added for camper activities.

The indoor space includes a full-sized gym, pool, cafeteria, library and auditorium. There will also be scheduled time at Cudahy Park.

WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A PARENT?

It is your responsibility to provide our staff with current and relevant infor-mation on the physical and mental health of your child and medical information while your child is at camp. We ask that you also notify us when your child will not be in attendance as scheduled. Please ensure that your child arrives to camp on time and is picked up on time. Finally, please make sure that you send your child with all of the items needed for a successful day at camp, including lunch, snack, bathing suit, towel, sweatshirt/light jacket, sunscreen, water bottle, etc.

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION

Summer Camp follows the same guide-lines as the School District of Cudahy for any medication administration. If your child requires medication during the camp day, please make sure you AND your doctor complete the necessary forms, which can be obtained from the rec office or online.

Our camp director and head counselors are all trained to administer medication by our district nurse.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS INJURED OR BECOMES ILL WHILE AT CAMP?

If your child becomes ill or is injured while at camp we will notify a parent/guardian. Parents will not receive a call every time a band aid or ice pack is given. Staff are trained in First Aid and CPR and will assess an injury to determine if a parent should be called. If your child is sick, with a fever of any sort, please do not bring them to camp until the fever is gone for 24 hours. If your child will not be in camp due to illness, please contact the camp phone number.

If your child does experience an injury while at camp and requires more than basic first aid, our staff will take the fol-lowing steps:

1. Paramedics will be called to handle the emergency.

2. Parent / Guardian will be contacted. If the parent / guardian is not able to be reached, the staff will proceed to the emergency contact list.

3. If the child requires further medical attention once the paramedics have arrived the child will be transported, via ambulance, to Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore and will be accompanied by a camp staff member.

Just a reminder to provide as much information as possible to help us and our ability to help your child in an emergency situation.

TIPS TO GO OVER WITH YOUR CHILD PRIOR TO CAMP

For many children camp is a new and un-familiar experience. In an effort to help transition and prepare your child to what they can expect from their time in camp, here are a few tips you can over with them prior to the start of camp:

Discuss the similarities between camp and school: you bring a lunch and a backpack; you’ll be with a teacher/counselor; many of your friends will be there and there is the excitement of meeting new friends.

If you have a chance to attend camp orientation and meet some of the camp staff that would be great! Not only will the camper get to meet some staff and other campers, they will also get to see the space and gain a greater sense of comfort.

If applicable, reassure your child that their siblings will be at the same camp and that there will be lots of times throughout the day to see them.

Pack a transition item in their back-pack that can comfort them through-out the day. This could be a small stuffed animal, or blanket, etc.

Create a countdown calendar.

Two good book recommendations are: The Night Before Summer Camp and Froggy Goes To Camp.
