The 18-year-old, who trains out of the PCYC Sutherland club, returned home from Russia this week with a bronze med- al. He won his first three fights, to make the semifinals, before losing to a Ka- zakhstan fighter. “It was the best experience I have had in my life. There is no feeling like winning a fight for your country. “And wearing the Australian flag on your shirt was a massive thing for me.” Upwards of 40 fighters from around the world featured in Sam’s division, the under-19 56kg class. He said it was the first time he had represented Australia and he hoped to represent his country again in the future, on an even bigger stage. “It showed me how close I am to doing something special,” he said. “The big goal for the next couple of years is a Commonwealth Games gold medal and then I will set my eyes on the Olympic Games after that.” To gain selection in the eight-strong Australian team which headed to Russia, Sam had to win the state title and the national title this year. “I had three fights at nationals and won all of those and that was the selection process to get to Rus- sia.” Sam will step up into the men’s division next year. I’m going up to men’s next year, but I’ve been fighting men since I was 14 or 15 so it won’t be anything new. “Next year at state finals I will get to take the head gear off for the first time and that will be pretty good.” Sam, who lives in Wollongong and travels up to Sutherland most days to train, said a big thank you to his parents and his coach- es, including Sean Fitzpatrick and Joel Keegan. He said he started boxing at the age of 10 and moved to the Sutherland club when he was 12 to train under Fitzpatrick. Sam said the Sutherland club was very strong at present with three national champs and seven state champs training at the gym.

Welcome to the first Boxing NSW Newsletter for 2017

Happy new year everyone best wishes for a prosperous and successful 2017

This will be a slightly shorter newsletter to get the year started concentrating on the important events coming up

There have been some new appointments made over the Christmas and new year which I will announce here too.

This is a busy time of year with registrations gym affiliations all due luckily with this all online now it has become a much smoother process.

Become a Voting Member of Boxing NSW

Did you know that you can become a voting member of Boxing NSW to attend the AGM and even campaign to get yourself voted onto the committee ?

You don’t have to be a Coach, competitor , official in fact there are plenty of mums and grandmothers on the vot-ing register. This way you can be part of the decisions that impact the running of Boxing in NSW and as Boxing NSW is a member state o Boxing Australia you even have a say in how Boxing Australia is run nationally and inter-nationally. So go to http://www.boxingnsw.org.au/registration/ and fill in the form to become a voting member and the application will be reviewed by the committee . The cost of membership is $100 first year and then $30 per annum thereafter.

Get the best seats in the house

Boxing Australia requires that to be in a competitors corner at a Boxing Australia sanctioned competition that all coaches to be qualified with a minimum of Level 1 Coaching Course . This is nationally recognized qualification

recognized within the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCSAS) overseen by the Australian Sports Commission.

The course itself is $300 but the qualification lasts four years and if you are cornering at competitions you almost always get in free so over the four years it is possible to make your money back several times over.

As a coach having members who are qualified to help in the corner is gold regardless of their competitive coaching experience

You must be attached to Boxing Gym or approved otherwise Coaching Coordinator Dean Groth - [email protected]
