May 2014
Spring has arrived at the
Port Clinton Yacht Club.
Flowers are blooming, the
grass is green, the docks
and clubhouse are ready
for a fantastic season. It
was challenging for the
riser committee headed by
Steve Alexander to work
around the ice to get risers
in place. The weather fi-
nally cooperated, the ice
melted, and our mission
was accomplished.
The month of May is jam
packed with activities.
Please review your new
yearbook and social calen-
dar or the PCYC web page
(events) for information. By
the way, the good photo-
graphs in the calendar were
taken by Gloria Denos and
the not so good by he who
will not be named.
Some events that are not in
the calendar are:
1. Spontaneous work par-
ties – join in the fun any-
time!
2. May 17th, Saturday –
The 8th Annual Port Clin-
ton High School Band
Sousa Concert at the Per-
forming Arts Center at
7:00pm. It is truly a well-
performed and inspiring
concert by our students.
3. May 18th, Sunday –
Great Lakes Basic Marine
Weather Seminar at
PCYC. Your $25.00 fee
includes lunch. Please
register at the bar soon!
4. Dennis Ladd will pro-
vide “free” Vessel Safety
Checks May 31 through
June 7, 2014. Sign up lists
will be at the bar the week
before.
5. Members are welcome
to join the Flag and Past
Commodores on Memo-
rial Day for the short Riv-
erfront Memorial Service
by Local Law enforcement
agencies and area Veter-
ans groups at 9:00 am.
This precedes the parade
and ceremony at Veterans
Park at 10:00am. I would
like to make a special invi-
tation to club members
who are veterans or cur-
rently serving in the mili-
tary to participate and
email me
their Name, Military Or-
ganization, Dates of Ser-
vice, and Deployments for
a military club roster.
6. On Sunday, May 25 I
will be firing fireworks
near my house to wel-
come in the summer sea-
son. Come out to the
beach and look towards
the Catawba buoy at dusk.
Boaters: My first job in
1970 was a dock boy at
CIC and Arnie the dock
master gave me very good
advice. Keep your dock
lines long especially the
spring and stern lines.
The stern line preferably
should tie to the far stern
cleat of the boat or to the
riser on the opposite side
of the dock to allow for
water fluctuations. We
always have a few boats
hanging in the air during
bad southerly winds. Also,
tie your lines low on the
risers around the metal
angle iron; otherwise, you
are relying on a single bolt
and small wooden riser to
hold thousands of pounds
of vessel. Finally, observe
that your bow pulpit is
not overhanging the metal
sheeting. When the water
level goes down your boat
will be damaged. The first
visiting boat I helped to
tie up was the visiting
Commodore from PCYC,
Henry W. Schaffner.
If you want to avoid join-
ing the “CRIB CLUB”
From the Commodore
MAY 2014
make sure you know the
location of the crib off the
PCYC beach. You may ask
Cindy B, Dennis R, Doug
B, or Ramone E for the
exact location of the rock
pile usually hiding just be-
low the surface of the wa-
ter.
New Members and spon-
sors please join us on Fri-
day, May 23 for the New
Member Welcome. RSVP
at the bar if possible but do
not let that stop you from
attending. We would just
like get an approximate
number to prepare for FNS
that evening.
Come over and enjoy the
club,
Michael Hablitzel

Volunteerism - [vol-uh n-teer-iz-uh m] the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other
people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward
Wow, I can’t believe that we are in May already and still hoping that our trees will start blooming. As Eric has
completed the first mowing of the season some signs of spring are evident. The tennis courts are ready for play
as our Commodore has been out with his leaf blower clearing any debris that remained from the winter. Soon
we will smell food cooking on BBQ grills and see the sights of boats passing by on the river.
Thanks to the 50 members that came and helped out at the Spring Work Party. There was a rumor that some
members had to help out with the Whiskey Light work party on PIB on that same day. There are several other
jobs that we could use help on that didn’t get completed that day. One of these items is cleaning the windows in
the clubhouse. If interested in helping with this or any other jobs please contact Chuck Reichman.
A big thanks needs to go out to Steve Alexander and his riser crew. Through ice delays and foul weather they
got their job done. As we ready our marina for the summer, Dennis and James Bergeman have been busy with
painting dock risers. If you see them make sure you show your gratitude as this is a time expending task.
Work on the pool has been progressing. Thanks to John Henry Bolte and Eric for their work to cleanup and re-
commission the pool. John has been donating his time almost every day to make sure everything needed gets
done. Also, our pool committee has been busy with lining up their staff and planning some enhancements for
the pool. We are hoping to improve our food and beverage services this season for our pool patrons.
As you read this work on our men’s restroom should be nearing completion. Thanks to Chuck, Eric and Patrick
for their demolition work. They did an amazing job in completing the removals in one day. Also, thanks to VC
Don Rodwancy, PC Rusty Jack, and PC Geoff Bailey for their help with the tile work.
Other projects on the near horizon include some improvements to the pool restrooms and kitchen areas and
completion of the marina pedistals. Our new team for the main clubhouse enhancements has been commis-
sioned and you will be hearing from us in the coming months on our findings regarding moving forward.
We have many fun social events coming up in May. One important event that I would like to remind our mem-
bers of is the New Member Welcome event on May 23rd. The value of this event is enhanced for new members
only if you veteran members attend to meet and greet them.
Please remind yourselves that, as the summer approaches, we have many children on the grounds, so, slow down
and keep your eyes open for small moving objects. And as my 2014 motto goes “This is your Club, use it and
have fun”.

ATTENTION DOCK MEMBERS I am glad to announce that we have a full marina, for both docks and dry sail, for the 2014 boating season.
Please be safe and have a great boating season
In the April Jib Sheet we announced that members may stern in their boats for the boating sea-
son. Please remember that it is being done at YOUR OWN RISK. Make sure the water is deep enough
before you stern into your dock. Also, your pulpit or bow cannot stick out more than 2 feet beyond
your dock. If it does you will have to dock bow first.
Forms for dockage either reassignment or first time requests are available at the bar. You must
fill out this form to be put on the waiting list. At this time we have 15 members on that list. I am sure
there will be more added as new members apply.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at [email protected] or 419-
706-4331.

Another month has passed and with that has come
some nicer weather. It is nice to see that the ice has
melted and that there are boats in the la-
goon. There are no "Cruise-Outs" scheduled for the
month of May. Please take the time to sign up for
the Sandusky Yacht Club "Cruise-Out" in
June. Looks like we are going to have great atten-
dance for this event. I am looking forward to get-
ting on the water with all of you very soon.
Happy Boating,
