WELCOME TO AP ART HISTORY AT NORTH PENN HIGH SCHOOL Instructor: Mr. Werner - [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION: This year-long Advanced Placement course provides high achieving students with a learning experience equivalent to a college level introductory art history survey course. Book Descriptions: A Short Guide To Writing About Art, 5TH edition or newer, Sylvan Barnet, is a guideline or manual for writing research papers. It is highly recommended that you purchase it, as you will find it highly useful for all other classes involving writing about art even through college. It is out of print , however. Check the used or student prices through a local college, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc. if you would like to find a used copy for purchase. It is really cheap. The Annotated Mona Lisa, is a condensed version of art history and its movements in a wonderfully written format. Many students purchase it for their use during the school year. It is not required reading for the summer, however, it will come in handy for review purposes as the course approaches the May test date. LOOK! The Fundamentals of Art History introduces two basic art historical methods—formal analysis and contextual analysis—revealing how to use these methods in class discussion and in written work. There is also valuable advice on writing art-history papers, with real examples examined to highlight common strengths and weaknesses, and to show how to develop an argument convincingly. To help students prepare for exams, D'Alleva explains the most effective methods of note-taking and outlines strategies for reviewing images. Finally, D'Alleva provides a fascinating view of the study of art history within its historical context, which will be particularly helpful for those considering majoring or minoring in this rewarding discipline.
