    Weekly Halacha - Parshas Tazria Metzora R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

    Keriat haTorah in Israel will be one parshah ahead of the Diaspora until May 12. Should a Torontonian in Israel go hear the Israeli parshah read?

    For at least two reasons, a non-Israeli should still hear the local parshah: According to most authorities, the mitzvah of Keriat haTorah is

    communal, and therefore the “correct” parshah is determined based on the community;

    The mitzvah of Keriat haTorah may not be specific to a particular parshah; many rule that it may be fulfilled with any parshah.

    The travelling Torontonian faces a separate problem of missing a parshah when travelling to Israel. The individual is not required to arrange a minyan to hear the missing parshah, but it would be good to do so. PARSHAS QUESTIONS TAZRIA METZORA BY: THE RAV

    First Aliyah: (12:2) Why is the very first law of human impurity discussed by the Torah the impurity of childbirth? Second Aliyah: (13:24) Why is a lesion that forms as a result of the trauma of a burn deemed tzara’as – isn’t is clear that it came from an external factor? Third Aliyah: (13:45) Why is the Metzora treated like a sinner in such a public way, when there are sinners of far greater sins who aren’t given the same treatment? Fourth Aliyah: (14:2) Why don’t the laws of the purification of a Metzora listed previously, right after the laws of skin tzara’as – shouldn’t the laws of clothing tzara’as have been listed after the laws of purification? Fifth Aliyah: (14:25) Why is sacrificial blood placed on the Metzora’s thumb and big toe? Sixth Aliyah: If a person finds mold in his house today, should he view it as a punishment from Hashem, just like Tzara’as of the house? Seventh Aliyah: Why do the laws of Tzara’as divide between the tum’ah of childbirth and the tum’ah of other bodily discharges?

    A PRACTICAL INCLUSION TIP So ALL of Us Feel Valued and Welcome at BAYT

    Inclusion- Connecting to Others

    Rabbi Simon Jacobson, basing his ideas on Kabbalah, states that love for your fellow human is the foundation of bonding with others. Because whether we feel it or not, all of us are intrinsically connected like parts of one organism. That is why love entails working consciously to get in touch with that inherent connection by feeling and expressing kindness and acceptance toward others. When you meet a person whom you’d like to connect with think about your bond with that person- how he or she complements you, no differently than the eyes complementing ears. With that in mind, think of healthy ways to express your loving-kindness to that person and then act on it. (from “How to Connect: 7 Steps”, exodus magazine.org)

    OBLIGATIONS PROCESS Important Information for the 2018-2019 Membership Year!

    At BAYT, members only need to complete an Obligations application once every three years so long as the member’s financial circumstances don’t change, which can be confirmed annually by signing a confirmation form. In other words, when an Obligations application is submitted, membership dues would be set for that year and the next two years (unless otherwise indicated). Of course, any member who had suffered a downturn in their financial situation is free to submit a new Obligations application and ask for a revised assessment. If your last application was for 2015-2016, please make sure you pick up an Obligations application from the office or download one from the Shul’s website. If you submitted an application for either last year or the year before, and your financial circumstances have not changed, then you can keep your dues at the same level by filling out a confirmation form. All forms (available on our website) are due no later than Friday, May 18 if you intend to partici-pate in the seating lottery and Thursday August 31st for everyone else.
