    PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This Shabbat we study Perek Revi’i of Perkei Avos which starts off with Ben Zoma, “Who is wise? One who learns from everyone…”

I may not be wise but serving as your President for the past two months has certainly been a learning experience.

The Executive Committee. We Zoom on average twice a week for a couple of hours. We each come together from very different spaces to serve the kehillah to the best of our ability. We debate (a lot). We ponder. We strategize. At the end of the evening, we make decisions. While not always apparent, each meeting provides opportunity aplenty to see beyond our normal field of vision.

Committees. Executive members have significant committee responsibilities. COVID, fundraising, membership, budget and finance, HR, health, publications, adult education, religious, mikvah, youth, security and technology committees among others. Committee work proves nothing is ever simple. Constitution committee chair and retired law professor Michael Bendel provides thoughtfully crafted advice reminiscent of my law school days as we work to improve board governance.

Past Presidents. Several Past Presidents have proactively offered or provided seasoned advice when solicited. Chuck English in particular regularly challenges me to contemplate every possible angle and outcome.

Our Rabbis: Rabbi Korobkin and Rabbi Spitz have been integral contributors in vital decision making, best manifest with the shul re-opening. While I may not have much time for a chavrusa, Rabbi Korobkin makes sure my learning continues every day.

Our Office and Facilities Teams: A general learns best from the troops in the trenches. Through our Task Force review processes, our staff has provided valuable input as we strive to better our BAYT.

Our Members: You sent many notes in response to Tuesday’s ‘state of your BAYT’ email. Most appreciative but even the couple critical messages were constructive. Your replies suggest you do want to know what is going on and do want to be a part of responding to the current crisis. Both good lessons.

    Shabbat Shalom.

    Jeffrey Brown

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

Does one say the “HaRachaman” for parents in birkat hamazon when eating outside the parent’s home? What about after a parent passes away? The text of the “HaRachaman” lines has never been uniform; different texts are found in Seder Rav Amram Gaon (Hilchot Seudah), Machzor Vitry (83) and KolBo (25), and none of them match the language used in our community. In the 13th century, Rabbi David Avudraham advised, “Each person should say 'HaRachaman' according to his own desire and request.” Therefore, a family or community has leeway in establishing its own practice. For Chabad: The sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe taught that the “HaRachaman” lines correspond to the ten sefirot described in mystical thought. According to this view, one may not change the text, and one must continue to refer to one’s parents even after they pass on. Note: One who hears someone else recite a “HaRachaman” should respond “Amen”, even though the text lacks the traditional format of a berachah. (Machzor Vitry 469; Avudraham Birkat haLechem, Zimun, Birkat haMazon; Kol Bo 99; Magen Avraham 215:3; Igrot Kodesh of Rav Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson 1 203-204)

  • Weekly Parsha by: Rabbi Spitz This week’s Parsha tells us about the mitzvah of benching. Moshe commands Bnei Yisroel: "Bless Hashem after you've eaten, for the good land He's given you". This one line leads to a whole set of rules about washing for bread, saying brachot and benching. Hashem says that he will confuse the nations of Canaan. He will send hornets ahead of the Bnei Yisroel and when the Canaanites hide, the hornets will hunt them out and poison them. The Canaanite soldiers will be blinded from this poison and easily defeated. Moshe warns Bnei Yisroel that a Jew must be especially careful not to hurt the feelings of a ger, a convert. A ger is a non-Jew who decides to keep all of the Torah and mitzvot. Once a Beit Din has converted the ger, that newcomer must be treated as an equal to any Jew. In fact, a Jew must go out of his way to be nice to a ger because the ger has given up everything to keep the Torah. Never remind a ger of their past, because you, Bnei Yisroel, were also strangers in Egypt. Also included in this Mitzva is a reminder to treat all newcomers well, such as a new student in school and a newcomer to your neighborhood.
