Welcome to 2013I was sitting in our work lunch-room, first day back for 2013, and a group of us got talking about computers ‘back in the day’. One co-worker was talking about this machine that he could input information into and it would tell you the answer through his tape deck! Now I’m too young to remember those types of computers, but never-the-less it got me to thinking how technology has changed so much over time.

Does anyone remember how we used to manage to meet up with someone in a crowd without the use of a mobile phone? Or how we found a random street without our GPS?

Technology has made our lives easier in so many respects. So how can we, at EMA Learning, make your life easier? What can we offer that will help in development without taking you out of your workplace for an entire day? What system allows colleagues from throughout the country to attend a training session together without having the cost of bringing them to one location?

PowerBox.

PowerBox is a new brand we are releasing this year. It is a webinar (web-based seminar) that offers a live, online and interactive training environment where you can learn from the convenience of your home or office - all you need is a computer and internet access.... And with technology these days, hopefully there won’t be many of you out there who don’t have both.

Continued from cover...

Initially we will be offering two courses through the PowerBox platform.

The first is a brand new programme specially written for those of you who have an induction for new employees and want a comprehensive Health and Safety aspect added.

Health and Safety - An Introduction for Employees introduces employees to their workplace Health and Safety responsibilities and opportunities. This is a one and a half hour presentation packed full of interesting information, rules and regulations, and things to watch out for in the workplace.

This is going to be held: 13 March & 25 March

The second is an adaptation of a popular programme we already run.

Time Management - Personal Effectiveness is the perfect programme to help facilitate increased productivity and personal effectiveness, while decreasing anxiety and stress. You can’t get more hours out of your day, but you can learn to use your time more effectively!

Register your interest in these programmes by emailing [email protected] and we will contact you with dates and times as they arise. It would also be worth keeping an eye on our Training Bytes fortnightly email as we will have information in there also.

More course topics will be added to these two in time... We would love to hear any suggestions you may have, as we want to offer programmes that are relevant and interesting.

With this new piece of technology at your fingertips, there really is no excuse for not upskilling and increasing your ability to do your job better. Cause that’s what 2013 is all about - Standing out in your workplace and being super!

Mentoring programmesTo support career development, many organisations have a formal mentoring programme, where employees can benefit from the wisdom, experience and connections of a senior employee, or even someone outside the organisation. Mentors can give employees invaluable guidance on their performance and how to develop their career.

Employee profilesMany organisations maintain profiles of their employees that detail their education, experience and skills. If you make the non-confidential or non-sensitive information they contain accessible to employees, you can help them gain insight into the career paths of others, and the knowledge/skills/experience/education required for a role. They can use these profiles as a research tool to find out more about roles that interest them, and their requirements. They can also use them as a tool to build their network.

Social networking toolsYour organisation may have internal social networking tools in place that allow employees to connect with other employees. Employees can use these tools to build their network, but also to research the requirements for other positions, or find a mentor.

Job descriptionsJob descriptions are another great way for employees to learn about other roles and their requirements. If they’re able to browse the various job descriptions in your organisation, they can use them as a tool to find other roles that leverage their skill set in different ways and to learn about the requirements for the jobs they think they’d like to progress into. This can help employees understand what areas they need to develop in order to qualify for a move or promotion.

Cross-functional projects/teamsIn many organisations, there are lots of opportunities to work on cross-functional teams. Cross-functional teams often focus on process improvement, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, quality or even corporate social responsibility. Working on one or more of these teams is a great way for employees to broaden their knowledge of the organisation and industry. It

can open their eyes to other careers and build their network as they work with people from across the organisation.

If you look around, your organisation most certainly has a wealth of tools and resources, beyond simple training, that can help support employee career development in addition to the business benefits they already provide. The trick is to make them accessible to employees and communicate how they can support career progression. Your organisation will reap the benefits in terms of improved employee performance, engagement and retention.

“... employee development should

[also] be seen as a means to broaden or deepen your employees’ knowledge, skills and experience”

In challenging economic times, organisations often pull back on their support for employee career development. A tough business climate can mean job reductions, fewer opportunities for advancement or promotion, and fewer dollars available for training activities.

But that retrenchment can come at a cost. Support for employee development and career progression is known to be a key contributor to employee engagement, which always pays off in terms of better performance and productivity. It’s also a key component of your ‘total rewards’ package for employees, or what some call the new ‘employee compact’. Employees expect that, in return for their labour, they’ll be given opportunities to expand their knowledge, skills and experience in a way that helps their career advancement. When that isn’t provided, employees feel let down by their employer and seek out other work opportunities.

The thing is, there are lots of practical ways your organisation can support employee career development. Not all of them are costly. Several are just employee performance management best-practices you should have in place anyway. Let’s look at a few of them.

Development activitiesMost organisations offer their employees development opportunities to address performance or skill gaps. But employee development should also be seen as a means to broaden or deepen your employees’ knowledge, skills and experience. Both the organisation and the employee will benefit from their increased capacity. And while you should certainly try to budget a certain dollar amount for training courses, conferences, continuing education, etc. for each employee each year, you should also keep in mind that up to 90% of the learning employees do is on the job. So work to cultivate a culture of development and encourage on-the-job development in the form of things like: stretch objectives, job shadowing, coaching, mentoring, temporary assignments, lunch and learn sessions, free webinars, volunteer activities, etc.

Performance appraisalsMost organisations provide their employees with at least an annual performance appraisal. To leverage this as a career development tool, make sure your managers use them as an opportunity to talk to their employees about their career aspirations and then provide work assignments and feedback to help them prepare, as well as coaching/mentoring/development support all year round.

Job postingsBy making sure your job postings are accessible to your employees, you help employees understand your business needs, what opportunities are available to them, and the skills, experience, education or credentials required for a given position. This accessibility supports career progression, internal mobility and employee retention. Beyond simply posting the jobs on your career website, you can actively recruit employees by publicising job postings in company emails, newsletters, intranets, etc. You may also want to consider posting new jobs internally first, or giving preferential treatment to internal candidates.

Supporting your employees’ career development makes good business sense
