WELCOMEOUR DOORS WILL SOON REOPEN

0302

THIS OCTOBER THE NEWLY TRANSFORMED LEEDS PLAYHOUSE WILL REOPEN. THE CONSTRUCTION WORKS ARE NOW ACCELERATING TOWARDS A THRILLING NEW CHAPTER IN OUR THEATRE’S HISTORY – AND WE COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED TO SHARE THE RESULTS WITH YOU.

Whilst the finishing touches to this ambitious project are still taking place, our opening autumn season is now ready to be announced – a programme filled with storytelling, spanning themes of history, identity, friendship and hope.

Leeds Playhouse is open to everyone, so throughout October we will be hosting a wide range of activities to celebrate and welcome old friends and new visitors alike. Look out for our Open Weekend – more details on pages 6-7.

This season also marks the inception of the Bramall Rock Void, a new studio theatre where we will present vital work in an intimate performance environment. Coupled with the revitalised Quarry and

Courtyard theatres, the Playhouse will have three state of the art stages under one roof - offering a wider than ever range of shows, and a vastly improved visitor experience for everybody.

We are particularly looking forward to the first ever show in the Bramall Rock Void – Charley Miles’ There Are No Beginnings. Charley is an outstanding local writer who began developing the play three years ago whilst she was on attachment at the Playhouse through Furnace, our artist development programme.

And at Christmas, the Quarry Theatre will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour and music as we travel along the Yellow Brick Road to the magical world of the Wizard of Oz.

OVER THE LAST TWELVE MONTHS, THE PLAYHOUSE INTERIOR HAS BEEN OPENED UP AND COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED. EVERY SINGLE PUBLIC SPACE IN THE BUILDING HAS BEEN REVITALISED AND ENHANCED. WHETHER OR NOT YOU’VE BEEN A REGULAR VISITOR TO THE PLAYHOUSE IN THE PAST, YOU WILL LOVE THE IMPROVED BUILDING.

The Quarry and the Courtyard theatres have both had a long-overdue renovation, with the installation of high-comfort seats, improved access for all, and a warm, contemporary feel.

The Bramall Rock Void studio theatre is an exciting new underground space within the building that begs to be discovered.

We have re-energised foyers with stylish comfy furniture, cosy corners for a coffee and browse, free WiFi and sockets when you need a workspace, and all new toilets and lifts.

You will also find a pit-stop coffee shop for when you’re in the area and need a boost, two new bars to cut the interval queues, and a gourmet food hall offering an array of delicious seasonal produce and delectable treats with great views across to Leeds Market and Victoria Gate.

You’ll also be able to enjoy al fresco drinks and snacks on our terrace situated in a new public park coming into bloom right on our doorstep.

We are extremely grateful to all our funders and supporters who have made this transformation possible, and we can’t wait to share this wonderful dynamic new space for everyone in Leeds to come in and feel at home.

TROJAN HORSE WAS A LOCAL STORY THAT HIT THE NATIONAL PRESS, ACCUSING ‘HARDLINE’ MUSLIM TEACHERS AND GOVERNORS OF PLOTTING EXTREMISM IN BIRMINGHAM SCHOOLS.

Adapted from the real-life testimonies of those at the heart of the UK Government’s inquiry, critically acclaimed theatre-company LUNG investigates what really happened.

Originally developed with Leeds Playhouse, and winner of Amnesty International Freedom of Expression and Fringe First awards, Trojan Horse is the story of a community torn apart by racial division, ‘British values’, and the culture of Prevent.

“Perhaps the bravest and most astutely political of shows…relevant, terrifying and beautifully told...”

IT’S 1975 AND SHARON JUST WANTS TO MARRY DONNY OSMOND. HER MUM, JUNE, IS WORKING TO KEEP GIRLS LIKE HELEN OFF THE STREET AND FIONA IS DESPERATE TO GET INSIDE THE MILLGARTH POLICE STATION INCIDENT ROOM.

Between the years of 1975 and 1980 the women of Leeds lived in fear. With no clue as to who was responsible for the sustained attacks and murders across the city, the authorities urged women to stay at home. From the fear and fury, a steadfast solidarity arose, birthing the Reclaim the Night movement and echoing down the generations to this day.

This is not a story about the Yorkshire Ripper.

DOES FREE WILL EXIST? WHO INFLUENCES THE CHOICES YOU MAKE? DO YOU KNOW? DO YOU CARE?

When a local boy goes missing, a group of extraordinarily ordinary teenagers are drawn into an adventure that is as exciting as it is unexpected. They enter a world of illegal data-collecting, mind manipulation and there’s also quite a lot regarding supermarkets too.

Inspired by modern TV hits such as Stranger Things, this is an adventure story about technology, standing up for what you believe in and always expecting the unexpected.

FURNACE FESTIVALFurnace Festival is a celebration of the new work, artists and partnerships we develop over the course of the year. Over four days in November, we'll showcase some of the projects we’ve been cooking up here at the Playhouse, from fledgling plays to new musicals.

We’ll also invite artists and audiences into the building for a jam-packed programme of skills workshops, conversations and social events.

This year, as part of the wider festival programme, we’re giving audiences a sneak peek at two major projects in development – Tess Seddon’s funny, timely and hyper-local Amateur Politician, and Northern Soul - a resonant and entertaining new play by multi award-winning writer Jim Cartwright.

ONE DAY. SIX CITIES. A THOUSAND STORIES.

Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and a world tour, Inua Ellams’ acclaimed Barber Shop Chronicles returns to Leeds Playhouse in November.

Newsroom, political platform, local hotspot, confession box, preacher-pulpit and football stadium. For generations, African men have gathered in barber shops to discuss the world. These are places where the banter can be barbed and the truth is always telling.

Barber Shop Chronicles is a heart-warming, hilarious and insightful new play that leaps from a barber shop in Peckham to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra over the course of a single day.
