The Word of God today urges us to seek wisdom. But what does the seeker of wisdom look like? A seeker of wisdom knows that he does not know, and is so open to new discoveries, new truths about life and about him or herself. If we have an answer for every problem that comes along, we can be assured that we are not seekers of wisdom. But when we can simply be present to a new situation, open to what it may reveal to us, and ready to admit that we don’t have all the answers for this particular situation, then we are on the road to wisdom. It is then that we have the possibility of listening to the voice of God as it is revealed in that particular happening.

Jesus urges us to keep awake – do not go through life in a drowsy state. This requires a certain level of alertness. Reflection is essential. Like most things, reflection is a habit – a good habit and one that we have to cultivate. It doesn’t happen automatically like rain falling down instead of up. We have to deliberately open ourselves up to the possibility of finding new truth in an old relationship, or in a familiar situation where we always presumed we knew what was going on.

For example, husbands and wives often lose the opportunity to discover new truths about each other because they presume they know the other as much as one can possibly know a person. This presumption places a large block between the man and the woman as they seek to live out their marriage in the ever-new situations that arise in everyone’s life. Part of the wisdom of being married is putting away all presumptions about the other person and remaining totally open to new discoveries.

Many marriages go stale and dry up because the man and woman no longer sense the adventure of living with another alive and changing human person.

One tried and true method for walking the road that leads to wisdom is the practice of Christian meditation. Do not be frightened off by the word, ‘meditation’. It just means reflecting on life in the presence of God. A person, who meditates, thinks about things. If that person is a Christian, then his or her meditation can be prayer by thinking about things, while consciously being aware of God’s presence. As you can imagine, such meditation usually involves a certain degree of quiet and separation from the usual activity of life. One who meditates needs a certain space and time which is conducive to reflecting upon life.

And don’t be put off by all the talk about different methods of meditation. If you simply reflect upon life in the presence of God, you are meditating. All that is usually required is some quiet time and space. Some people use a notebook to record any important thoughts or insights they had during their time of meditation. This can be helpful as a way of deepening some convictions and as an incentive to put those convictions into action or perhaps you might want to read some spiritual book as a form of meditation. As you read, whenever a thought strikes you, stop; stay with that thought; let it sink in and pray about it.

Remember these words from our first reading: “Resplendent and unfading is wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her.”

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who brought Halloween candy, treats and prizes for our Halloween Spooktacular! We had a record-breaking crowd for this event and without the donations that so generously came in during the past week, there would have been a whole lotta disappointed ghosts and goblins. In fact, we had just enough

candy, treats and Cat Walk prizes to make it to the very end of the Spooktacular...whew! We also gratefully thank the many teens, adults and families who came out to help with games, snacks and general crowd control, under the great direction of Devyn Buschow. Special thanks to Chris Kubin for cooking all those corny dogs, Cecilia Pecararo for donating all the cotton candy, Jessica Huckeba for baking and donating all the yummy Halloween cupcakes and Stacie DeDominicis, Lynn Hyles & Lynn Kinard for all their help with set-up. An extra shout out to parishioner Tony Padilla & Barcel Co. for donating all the marshmallow suckers and packages of Takis tortilla chips and Ken Rarick for his exceptionally generous monetary donation! That came in reeeallly handy on Monday for those last minute needs. Lastly, we thank Mary Grulke for coming in to handle the snack table all night and the incredible Limones Family, including DJ “Carlime,” for all their help before, during and after the event.

And on behalf of Holy Spirit’s Outreach Ministry, a sincere thank you to everyone who donated canned goods and/or miscellaneous food items for our food pantry! We collected over 300 items during our event, which will help stock the pantry for the holidays.

Join us for our annual Children’s Christmas event, Breakfast with St. Nicholas! Enjoy a delicious breakfast, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus, musical performance by the children’s & youth Christmas choir and there might even be a visit from St. Nicholas himself! Admission to breakfast - PER PERSON - is a new child’s toy, which will be donated to Brighter Tomorrows, one of Dallas County’s largest women’s shelters. But, if you forget your toy, a monetary donation, per person, will be taken in lieu of. All cash donations go to Brighter Tomorrows. This event is open to the entire parish….not just Faith Formation. So grab your grandchildren, nieces & nephews and join us for a wonderful Christmas event!

There will be no Faith Formation classes on Sunday, November 19 or 26 so that we can celebrate and enjoy the Thanksgiving Holidays! Classes resume on Sunday, December 3, the first Sunday of Advent. Have a blessed holiday!

Kindergarten Mornings with Mom & Dad are this Sunday, November 12 in the dining room at your child’s regularly scheduled Faith Formation class time.
