This event has become an important tradition for the school to acknowledge our fine students, the quality of our teaching staff and the significant contribution made by our stakeholders who generously contribute each year to make the awards for academic excellence possible.

DEAN’S WELCOME

LAW AWARDS

Educated at the University of Queensland and at the University of Oxford (in Government, History and Law), Steven Skala has more than 35 years’ experience as a senior investment banker, business and corporate adviser and leading commercial lawyer.

He is Vice Chairman, Australia of Deutsche Bank AG, a position he has held since 2004 and is also Chairman of Blue Chilli Technology Pty Ltd (a large start-up incubator).

Currently, Mr Skala is also Chairman of the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Deputy Chairman of the General Sir John Monash Foundation (an education foundation) and a Director of the Centre for Independent Studies (a think tank). Mr Skala serves as a Member of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, a position he was elected to in 2003.

Mr Skala is a former Acting Chairman and Director (for 10 years, concluding in 2015) of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (major Australian government owned broadcasting and media company), a former Chairman of King Island Company Limited (ASX: KID) (food), Wilson HTM Investment Group Limited (ASX: WIG) (now Pinnacle Investment Management Group Limited (ASX: PNI) with more than $23Bn of funds under management) (investment) and Hexima Limited (biotechnology) and a former Director of Bermuda-based Max Capital Group Limited (NASDAQ: MXRE) (insurance and re-insurance), the Channel TEN Group of companies (media, television) and Rothschild Australia e-Fund Investors Pty Ltd. (investment in technology). He is also a former Chairman of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Film Australia Limited, the former Vice President of the Board of the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and a former Director of The Australian Ballet.

Between 1985 and 2004 Mr Skala was a Senior Partner and Head of the Corporate and Commercial practice of the law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler.

In 2010, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his service to business, commerce, the arts and education.
