In the spring, many of us start the season with house cleaning. We wash windows and walls and re-arrange the furniture. We love the fresh, cleanness of a well cleaned house with the spring breeze blowing in through the window.

But did you ever think that your body might benefit from a bit of spring cleaning?

You do not have to go on a juice diet or a water fast to “cleanse” your body, but there are a few things you can do to give your insides a bit of its own house cleaning.

If you give your body a bit of rest from the normal toxic load it carries, your mind should be clearer and your health should improve a bit. Spring is a great time to do this.

Let’s begin with cleaning up our diets. A diet heavy in processed foods, red meat, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and sweets is overburdened and probably not functioning properly. But, even those with really, clean diets need a little extra help once in a while. Every day we have to deal with chemicals in the air, our water, our food, and the environment as a whole. Cleansing your body can assist your natural detoxification pathways and you’ll feel better as a result.

For one week, cut back on red meat, gluten, sugar, baked goods, soda, caffeine, alcohol, and any processed or fast food. This doesn’t mean avoid them completely, but try to cut back as much as possible to assist your digestive tract. Increase leafy greens, load up on veggies, fish, whole grains — like quinoa — and lots of water. The more you cut back, the greater success you’ll have. Plus, you may even lose some weight.

I favor kick-starting this diet clean up with a 3-day lemon water fast if you can do it. Here is a good, tasty recipe to try.

Lemon Water One Gallon RecipePrepare one gallon for two days.• 2 cups Organic Lemon or Lime Juice• 1 cup Organic Maple Syrup• 1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper• 14 cups pure spring water

1. Drink at least eight glasses of the lemon water per day.

2. Tailor the cayenne to suit you. You can use more or less but do not to leave it out altogether. It is a great pick-me up. The maple syrup is an important source of energy for the cellular house cleaning.

3. Drink peppermint tea and/or additional water as desired.

4. Take a cup of Smooth Moves Tea or three droppers of Bowel Stim at night to be sure your bowels move well.

5. Do this for three days if you can. Then start the clean food diet recommended in step 1. Break your lemon water fast with a light meal.

The first detox pathway is cleansing the colon because you can’t do a liver or gallbladder cleanse if you’re not moving waste out properly through the colon.

Start with daily lemon water in the morning; add in lots of fresh water, and herbal teas. Tummy Soothe Tea is a pleasant tasting tea that supports digestion, settles the stomach, and relieves gas. If you are feeling blue, try Happy Days Tea to brighten your outlook and lift your spirit.

Aim for two to three bowel movements a day. This means you will need to drink lots of water! If things aren’t moving along as they should, an herbal laxative such as Bowel Stim, colon hydrotherapy, coffee enemas, and/or drinking pure green juice can help get things moving. If you have dry constipation, moistening herbs like slippery elm can help. Mix the slippery elm powder in a little water to make a thin gruel or give Slippery Elm Compound a try. A cup of Smooth Moves tea or several droppers of Bowel Stim at night can make a big difference if you need to stimulate peristalsis.

Again, lots of water throughout the day is helpful. You need at least 10–12 cups of water daily. Eat parsley, asparagus, and pure cranberry juice. Make sure the juice is pure and has no added sugar. Kidney/Bladder is a great herbal formula if your urinary tract needs a little extra support.

INTERNAL SPRING CLEANING 7 Steps to Cleanse Your Body of Toxins

by Rachel Weaver, M.H. Add in beets, ginger, and citrus fruits. You can also add turmeric if you desire. Drink at least two cups of Dandy Blend daily. Take Milk Thistle or Liver Formula daily to aid in liver cleansing. Carrots, beets, dark leafy greens, and green juice aid in cleansing the liver. Add fiber into your diet to assist the body in removing toxins via the colon that the liver has filtered out; Freshly ground flax seeds and chia seeds are good for this.

If you take prescription medicine, antibiotics, get vaccinations, have dental amalgam fillings, or you are exposed to toxins via your environment, then you also need to do a heavy metal cleanse. This can be a little more intensive than your run-of-the-mill spring cleanse. Add chlorella, spirulina, and blue-green algae to draw the metals out of your system. You can add these powders to your smoothie to disguise the flavor or take them in pills. Dr Schultz’s Super Food tablets are a good way to take these if you have trouble with the taste of the powder. Try a detox juice using the following recipe.

Heavy Metal Detox JuiceJuice the following:• 3 celery stalks• 1 cucumber• 1 handful parsley• 1 handful cilantro• 1 green apple• 1/2 fennel bulb• 1 lemon

The last step can be up to you. Do you need an emotional detox, a spiritual cleanse, or perhaps just a simple cleansing of your personal care or cleaning products? Remember to breathe (slowly and deeply), meditate on God’s word, and journal during your cleanse. Take inventory of your life, forgive those who have hurt you, practice being grateful, kind, and loving. Smile more and spread lots of cheer. A happy heart is really good medicine.

If you begin with Step 1 on week 1 of the month and do Step 1 and 2 for 2 weeks before trying Step 3, you will likely do best. You can do Step 3 in week 3 along with Step 5, 6, and 7.

Then week 4 you can do Step 4 along with 5, 6 and 7, all the while eating clean. You will be surprised at how you feel at the end of the month. Make April or May your house cleaning time. These are great spring months, and you will be delighted at how you feel.

5. Cleanse the Lymphatic SystemTwo of the best lymphatic exercises are daily dry skin brushing and rebounding. Before every shower, grab a natural bristle brush and brush toward your heart. Start at your feet and move up (avoiding the face and chest). Rebounding is great for moving lymphatic fluid, as is getting a massage. Go get one! Do not dry skin brush if you have high blood pressure. For herbal support, Lymph Move is a good choice to support normal lymph flow, healthy lymphatic drainage, and elimination of metabolic wastes.

Not a tincture, but a suspension of slippery elm powder to give you all of Slippery Elm's slippery goodness. Slippery Elm's beneficial mucilage is poorly extracted with alcohol based tinctures, so we created a product that contains the slippery elm powder. Slippery Elm Compound combines slippery elm bark powder with herbal extracts that support normal digestive function and a healthy gut lining.

When mixed with water, the suspended slippery elm bark powder absorbs the water and becomes characteristically thick and mucilaginous. One teaspoon of Slippery Elm Compound makes 4 teaspoons of slippery goodness your throat and digestive tract will love.

INGREDIENTS: Botanical Ingredients: Slippery Elm bark powder, Licorice root, Fenugreek seed, Calendula flower, Orange peel, Ginger root, Cinnamon bark, Clove bud.

Other Ingredients: Distilled Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Wild Flower Honey, Organic Cane Alcohol, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Omega 3 Blend (oregano extractive, flaxseed extractive, plum extractive).

HERB PROFILEBLACK WALNUT Juglans nigraFresh HullsThe fleshy green hull surrounding the black walnut nut is prized for making unwanted intestinal guests uncomfortable. The fresh green hull is preferred for parasite cleanses as the anti-parasite compounds are reduced when dried. Though parasite cleanses can be done any time of year, spring is a great time for house cleaning of this sort.

At the Natural Hope Herbals farm, walnuts are picked from the trees each fall, then de-hulled, and tinctured fresh.

Dried HullsThe dried hull extract is preferred for supporting dental health since it contains more minerals and less toxic compounds, making it more appropriate for long-term use. Dried black walnut hull is the key herb in Dental Formula, formulated by Rachel Weaver, MH.

Both the fresh green hull and the dried hull can be used topically to support a healthy skin microbiome. Glycohol extracts made with the dried black walnut hull are gentler and less likely to irritate the skin.

SpringtimeMOM TIPS

Common garden weeds are some of the best spring tonic herbs. Children often love to learn about edible weeds. The garden weeds God plants for us, often have more nutrients than the vegetables we carefully tend.

• Add dandelion leaves to the salad and serve with a sweet sour or bacon dressing to mask the bitter flavor.

• Chickweed is mild in flavor and can be steamed, sautéed, or eaten raw in a salad.

• Dandelion flowers make convenient vitamin rich snacks as you walk through the lawn.

• Stinging nettle leaves add robust flavor to beef and vegetable stews. They don’t sting after they are cooked. Pick them with gloves before they bloom and the stalks become tough and fibrous.

• Cleavers make a great cleansing tea that supports healthy lymphatic flow, urinary tract function, and clear skin.
