Week One: 21 – 27 September or 25 - 29 January 2016Regardless of your enrolment date, you should plan to be in Bournemouth by the Monday at the beginning of Week One at the latest.

Week One includes important course induction activities as well as a great selection of daytime social activities and evening events – see your Events Guide for all the details.

TimetablesYou’ll be able to access your academic timetable online before the start of term.

www.bournemouth.ac.uk/student/timetable

To really succeed at BU, it’s important to find a good balance between your studies, work and social time.

Planning your study time will help you find that balance. We recommend you match the amount of time allocated in your timetable to your personal study time. e.g. if your timetable allocates 15-20 hours a week of lectures or seminars, you should expect to spend 15-20 hours each week in your personal time preparing for classes, researching assignments or discussing your ideas and doing group work.

You’ll find you’re still left with lots of time to get involved in other activities, part-time work and exploring the area with friends to really make the most out of all the exciting opportunities at BU.

Meet new peopleThe Events Guide in your welcome pack is full of social and sporting activities during Week One and beyond. These activities have been planned specifically to help you settle in, giving you opportunities to meet new people and feel supported.

We’ve covered everything from days out, evening events, club and sport taster-sessions, to advice and guidance drop-ins. Whatever your needs, there’s something for you, so read the Events Guide before you get here and make sure you bring it with you!

If it’s not in our Events Guide, we haven’t organised it, so bear that in mind when signing up to other event websites and social media groups.

Freshers’ Fair Don’t miss the SUBU Freshers’ Fair on

Saturday 26 September. A huge event on campus with your favourite brands, local companies, entertainment, clubs and societies and your Students’ Union all in one place to get you started with life in Bournemouth.

There will also be a Refreshers Fair in the spring term for any students joining us later in the year.

Getting to BUWe have great rail links, an airport and being by the coast, you can get a ferry to Poole from from both France and Spain. There are detailed instructions on our website, including the postcodes of most our key buildings which you can save to your GPS or Google Maps.

BU’s airport transfer serviceOn 19 and 20 September 2015 and 23

and 24 January 2016 we provide an airport transfer service at Heathrow, and a Meet & Greet service from Gatwick, for students arriving from overseas. You need to book this service in advance online.

www.bournemouth.ac.uk/airporttransfers

ImmigrationStudents from non-EEA countries need to

apply for a Tier 4 Student visa. See our website for all you need to know about immigration, applying for your visa and how BU can help you.

www.bournemouth.ac.uk/immigration

Fees and FinanceIf you haven’t already done so, you need to apply for any student loans, maintenance grants, bursaries and scholarships you may be eligible for.

Like many students, starting at university might mean you are learning to manage your own money for the first time. Or perhaps your financial situation will be very different, especially if you have previously been working full-time. Look at our online budgeting information to help you manage your money while at uni, especially so you can cover your living costs during your first few weeks. UK students should expect to receive any financial support applied for - for example a loan, grant, bursary, scholarship or sponsorship - after enrolling on your course in Week One. This can take up to two weeks, so make sure you have enough money available to you until then.

www.bournemouth.ac.uk/funding

Read the Fees Policy on our website which explains the rules about payment of fees. It’s important that you understand how we decide how much money to refund you if you withdraw from your course for any reason.

For more details read the Finance section of our online rules and regulations information.

If you’re an American student, you should start applying for your Federal

Loan as early as possible because the process can take quite a long time to complete. Find out more at: www.bournemouth.ac.uk/usa-funding

AccommodationIt’s not long until you move in to your new ‘home from home’.

Before you move in, you will receive an email from our Accommodation team. It will include important information on what you need to do to in preparation for your arrival, including where to go and what date and time you need to check-in to your new home.

If you’re not sure what to bring, our advice is not to over-pack. The majority of rooms in our halls of residence are singles, with limited storage space.

Furniture, mattresses, storage, a desk and chair are all provided, so pack essentials such as clothes, bedding, a towel, and a few cooking utensils, crockery items and some cutlery. You might also want to pack a reminder of home.

If you’re not planning to live in BU accommodation and need to organise an alternative option, our BU Lettings service can help.

www.bulettings.com/students

If you’re an international student, you may prefer to buy bedding, kitchen

utensils and other items when you arrive in the UK. You can also order a bedding or kitchen pack in advance at:

Lina Halim MA Post Production Editing

After 21 hours of travelling, I arrived in Bournemouth so my top tip is to make up your bed as soon as you arrive so

it is ready for when you need to sleep. I would also recommend getting your

NUS card as it offers so many discounts in shops and online stores.

Week OneYour BU experience begins with Week One, an essential introduction to your course and BU life. You’ll meet other students on your course, lecturers and other faculty staff, enrol on your course and take part in some introductory lectures and seminars. You’ll also have plenty of time to get involved with social activities including volunteering, clubs, societies and some great day and evening events. Plus, there are loads of sport taster sessions for you to choose from each day.

You’ll have a timetable for your course seminars and activities during Week One. It’s your responsibility to fit your optional activities around the academic ones, so spend some time looking through the Events Guide before you arrive and plan your time carefully to make the most of all the brilliant opportunities available to you.

Enrolment explainedEnrolment is the day you officially become a BU student. You will need to provide proof of your identity and original copies of any educational qualifications needed for entry to your course e.g BTEC, A-level, degree and/or English language qualification results. You should have received an email from us with details about your first session and what to bring with you to enrol but please contact us if you have any questions.

Study supportmyBU is our online virtual learning environment which you can access at any time and from anywhere. You’ll find lecture notes, reading lists for your units and helpful learning resources, including past exam papers. You can also access online learning communities such as Academic Skills and Languages@BU.

From day one of Week One you’ll meet new people, have the chance to try something new and most importantly, you’ll begin learning more about your chosen subject. This section will be useful once you arrive but is worth reading now so that everything will feel more familiar when you’re here.

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) sessionsThese are group sessions led by a student who has already completed the first year of your course. They are a great way to find out about study techniques relevant to your subject. Many of our undergraduate courses offer PAL sessions and you’ll find out more in your first few weeks.

BU campusesStaff and students will be available from Week One to direct you around campus - just look out for our friendly welcome teams in their brightly coloured t-shirts.

Here’s a handy guide to BU room numbers to help: The first letter tells you which building the room is in. The next letter or number tells you which floor. So, BG14 is on the ground floor of Bournemouth House and P403 is on the 4th floor of Poole House. You can also collect a campus map from any BU reception. and access maps via the iBU app (see page 19).

Eating and drinkingThere are lots of places to eat and drink both on and off campus, catering for a range of dietary needs.

At the Lansdowne Campus you’ll find SUBU’s café-bar the Engine Room and The Old Fire Station nightclub. There’s the BoHo Lounge, the Student Shop in Bournemouth House and cafeterias in Studland House and the Executive Business Centre too. You’ll also find some great day and night-time options just a short walk from BU buildings.

Talbot Campus has a large refectory with a variety of hot and cold options, and there are cafés in most buildings serving tea, coffee and snacks. You’ll also find SUBU’s Dylan’s Bar and Student Shop on this campus.

SUBU is your Students’ Union and we’re here to ensure you make the most of BU.

From exciting opportunities such as volunteering, charity fundraising and clubs & societies, to our independent Advice team, Nerve Media and part-time work opportunities and events in our bars, cafés and nightclub, SUBU is there for you.

You can find us online, on social media, and on both campuses - in the brand new Student Centre on Talbot Campus and Studland House on Lansdowne Campus.

Your voiceOne of the main reasons SUBU is here is to represent you and your views, if you want to change something either in SUBU, BU or even nationally.

SUBU is led by four full-time officers, elected by students each year to represent you in different aspects of university life.

In order to do this effectively, SUBU has a world-leading representation and democracy system, with over 700 student representatives. That’s one for every 20 students.

We also have four executive councils – Activities, Welfare, Education and Lansdowne – who help to deal with your ideas and ensure that the changes you want are listened to and acted upon.

The elections for the council positions begin at the start of term. Maybe you could nominate yourself for election to a council position? Make sure you use your reps if you have any issues throughout the year.

Your officers for 2015/16 are:

Chloe Schendel-Wilson, President

Jonathan Leung, Vice-President Activities

Ellie Mayo-Ward, Vice-President Education

Reece Pope, Vice-President Welfare

Jonathan LeungVice President – Activities, SUBU

I’ve been involved with SUBU since my first year and now I am the Vice-President Activities. My top tip is a budget conscious one… a student budget can be stretched

out if invested in the right gear, try buying a bike and ride down the beach or just a short

journey from Bournemouth to the New Forest, you can even ride to uni and save money.

By bus BU buses operate between the main

student areas, from Poole to Bournemouth and Boscombe. The U1 service runs between Talbot and Lansdowne campuses regularly, and takes about fifteen minutes.

Travel on BU buses will be free during Week One to give you time to collect, or order, your key card. ‘The Key’ is a smartcard ticket which you can use on all the uni buses. You can either buy an annual key card or you can top up with 10 single journeys for £10. You may have chosen to purchase a key card when you applied for your accommodation, which you can collect when you move in.

By bikeWhether you’re already a keen cyclist

or interested in starting to cycle, you’ll find lots of useful information on our website about bike compounds, cycle routes, the Bike Doctor, staying safe on the roads, buying discounted lights and D-locks, and joining cycling clubs through SUBU and SportBU.

Please remember to wear a helmet, use cycle lanes where they are available, put lights on your bike for night travel and secure your bike with a D-lock when not in use.

Car parkingThere are no parking spaces available at

Halls of Residence, except for blue badge holders. You’ll only be able to get a BU parking permit if you meet the criteria, for example if you’re registered disabled or have a young child. There are penalties of up to £70 if you park without a permit.

Driving in the UKAs an international student, you will find

everything you need to know about driving licences, road tax and vehicle registration in the Study, Work and More section of the UKCISA website.www.ukcisa.org.uk

Trips & ToursWe organise trips around the local area,

to places like Christchurch, the Isle of Wight and the Jurassic Coast, and to towns and cities such as London, Oxford, Bath and Brighton. The trips are good value for money and a great way to explore and meet new people. You can buy tickets from SUBU reception or online.www.subu.org.uk/tripsandtours

iBU and iSUBU mobile appsYou can access our iBU mobile app via your

device’s app store from the moment you receive your BU login and password. This will give you access to campus maps, bus information, our online library catalogue, SportBU information and BU news and events. After you have enrolled, iBU will also display your timetable and course reading list.

iSUBU is your loyalty and rewards app to ensure you get the most from SUBU’s outlets. From food and coffee deals, to drinks offers at the Old Fire Station, there’s loads of great bonuses to be had.

Part-time work The National Union of Students (NUS)

recommends you limit part-time working to 10-15 hours a week during term time so that you don’t jeopardise your studies. There are lots of

Stay up to date

opportunities on-campus working as a BU student ambassador or in a SUBU outlet such as Dylan’s Bar, the Student Shops and the Old Fire Station. Recruitment starts in September each year. Our Careers & Employability team can support you when looking for part-time work with their employer links and online job vacancy system MyCareerHub – they can also help you develop your CV writing skills and interview technique.

Have you met…?

AskBUOur AskBU advisers can offer you advice and access to information throughout your studies at BU.

The team can help you with lots of practical things such as providing letters to confirm you are a student, replacement ID cards, resetting your BU account password or simply point you in the direction of your next lecture. You can also go to them for information about bursaries, scholarships, immigration and how to submit appeals, mitigating circumstances and complaints.

If you’re looking for academic, emotional or wellbeing support, the team can help to point you in the right direction. You might want to develop your academic skills or talk to other students who have already completed the first year of your course. Or, you may want to find out what support is available if you have a disability, injury, learning difference, medical or mental health condition. The team are there to help, so make sure you use them.

Charlie AndersonAskBU Adviser, BU

It’s my job to help students find answers to their questions. Outside of work I coach the BU

American Football team, the Bobcats.

My top tip... apart from making sure you go to all your induction sessions in Week One, it has

to be to go to Freshers’ Fair! It’s full of local businesses giving away free things and you

might find a club or society to get involved with.

AskBU are based on both campuses and offer a friendly drop-in service - they also have private interview rooms if you wish to discuss your query in a more confidential environment. You can also contact them by phone and email, see page 35.www.bournemouth.ac.uk/askbu

Take noticePractise mindfulness and learn to recognise what makes you feel anxious. Our Student Wellbeing team offers sessions to help you develop your resilience and deal with life’s issues. Look out for your flat and classmates’ wellbeing too, as they might not like to say if they’re struggling.

We care about your health and wellbeing. Here are five steps that promote emotional and physical good health.

Mark HollandBSc (Hons) Games Technology

I have lived with the same people since halls and we found house meals a great way to bring us all together. It is also cheaper and easier to cook for more than one person.

Even when I’m cooking for myself I usually make extras for another day. For example

leftover ragu is great with pasta, rice, baked potatoes, fajitas and even nachos.

Register with a doctor: Our Medical Centre on Talbot Campus is

popular with students or search for one close to where you’ll be living. We suggest you bring with you any medicines you need for your first month to give you time to register with a doctor.

Register with a dentist: You have to pay for dental treatment, even

under the NHS, but may be entitled to assistance as a student. Check the NHS website for details of local dentists. www.nhs.uk

Immunisations: The NHS recommend that all students

are vaccinated against Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) and Menigitis C before arriving at university. Book an appointment with your current doctor.

Infectious diseases: These include common but serious

diseases such as influenza (flu) and measles, as well as less common diseases such as meningitis and tuberculosis. If you are diagnosed with an infectious disease you must tell the university and not attend classes or on-campus activities until a doctor confirms you have recovered.

Student Wellbeing: Our Student Wellbeing team is made up

of wellbeing advisors and counsellors who offer a range of activities aimed at helping you to stay happy and healthy. There are workshops and drop-in sessions offering practical advice as well as a large range of information and resources which can help you or a friend. Our wellbeing advisors can offer support if you’re feeling homesick or worried, while our team of counsellors operate a free and confidential counselling service.

National Health Service (NHS):If you’re coming to BU on a Tier 4 student

visa, you will have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of your visa application – this entitles you to free treatment on the NHS. Usually EU students are covered by the European Health Insurance Card, but you should check this and take out appropriate insurance if not.

Tuberculosis (TB): If you are from a high-risk country where

TB is very common, the Home Office require you to provide a certificate proving that you do not have infectious TB before you can apply for a Tier 4 Student Visa. They may also ask you to attend a TB screening appointment in the UK. Find out more at www.gov.uk/tb-test-visa

Cyber safetyWe work hard to keep the BU community cybersafe. That’s why you’ll have received different login details during your application process and will be sent reminders to reset your password throughout the year. Keep your BU login details safe, don’t share them and only use them to access on BU systems - let us know if you receive a potential phishing email asking you to use your BU login details to join an event, activity or social media group. There’s lots you can do too, from protecting your mobile devices and being responsible with online gaming to thinking about your digital footprint and the risks of advertising parties on social media.

For more advice visit: www.getsafeonline.org

Personal safetyPlan where you are going, how you will get there and travel back. Use iBU to check bus times or book a licensed taxi in advance. Be aware that– if you’re wearing headphones or chatting on your phone, you may not be paying full attention to your surroundings.

Personal propertyAlways lock windows and doors – even if you’re only going to the garden or flat next door. Mark valuable items with your postcode using an ultraviolet pen and register items serial numbers for free at www.immobilise.com – this will help the police return property to you if it is lost or stolen.

Staying safeBournemouth is a great and friendly place to live. However, as in most towns and cities, it’s sensible to take precautions and protect yourself and your property.

Bicycle storageLock your bike, using a D-lock, in a designated area that’s under regular surveillance rather than a lamp post. There are bike compounds at all BU halls of residence and on both campuses.

Dorset Police on Campus The local police operate a universities Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) who patrol the campus and work closely with patrols in student residential areas to help keep the BU community safe. PC Andy Scarratt and PCSO Majid Samadi hold regular surgeries on both campuses, have an office at Talbot Campus and are available on the phone if you have any safety concerns. See page 35 for details.

Emergencies and accidentsIf you experience or witness a genuine emergency, phone 999 and ask for an ambulance, the police or the fire service. If you are on campus, it’s important that you dial 222 from a BU phone or 01202 962222 so that BU staff can help the emergency services access the location easily and quickly.

Community To #belongatbu means becoming a part of our community. The BU community is made up of students, staff and members of the local area who visit the university.

Respect each otherWhoever you are, we believe that you deserve to be respected by other students and staff, whatever your background, beliefs, values or lifestyle choices. In return, we expect you to be equally respectful of others.

Respect your neighboursYour neighbours may be the other people in your flat, in flats next door, below and above yours, or in the houses on your street. Your neighbours may have an early lecture, or need to work early in the morning. They might work shifts, have young children or they could be elderly. Take the time to get to know your neighbours when you move in, keep the outside of your property tidy, consider others when planning social events at home and try not to be noisy when coming in or out of your house or flat late at night.

Activities From joining a club, society or network, to

fundraising through Raising and Giving (RAG) or giving up your time through SUBU Volunteering, there’s so many opportunities to get involved with and really make the most of your time at BU.

We have over 100 clubs and societies, ranging from academic to cultural to sports. RAG organises challenges all year round including Leggit, our charity hitchhike where you have 36 hours to get as far away from Bournemouth as you possibly can, without spending a penny.

And SUBU Volunteering has lots of opportunities too, whether that’s five minute volunteering or being a leader on a student-led project. There’s something to do, no matter how much time you have to give.

If you want to help shape the direction of SUBU Activities, you can run to be on the activities council in the Part-Time Officer elections in October. And if you want to develop your CV and skills further, you can take part in the Activities Leadership Scheme.

Life at BU is not just about studying. You’ll find lots to do, new friends to meet and lots of support and advice. With so many opportunities, there’s something for everyone, making your time at BU productive and enjoyable.

Sports, clubs and societiesOur sports facilities are available to all students, whether you want to stay healthy or you’re a varsity athlete. SportBU membership gives you access to the gym, classes, social sport sessions and court hire, all of which can be booked through iBU our mobile app. You can try out to be part of our Varsity sport programme to join a squad and compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league. We’re currently in 28th place by the way.

Sports clubs supported by SUBU include our award-winning BU Boat Club, our

American football team, the Bobcats, and our Ultimate Frisbee team. For the 2015 season, trials will run from Sunday 27 September to Friday 2 October, although there may be opportunities later in the year for some sports.

Music, arts and craftsOur music department offers lots of musical opportunities for all levels of ability and interests. We have a Big Band, Orchestra and three different choirs that you can audition for, or enjoy listening to in venues around the local area throughout the year. The team will also help you learn to play a musical instrument and are always looking for volunteers to support their activities.

If you enjoy the arts, you will enjoy the frequent exhibitions displayed in our Atrium Art Gallery and art collections around campus. Our Creative Tuesdays (Talbot Campus) and Creative Thursdays (Lansdowne Campus) sessions are a great way to meet like-minded people if you enjoy crafts like sketching, sewing, knitting or jewellery-making.
