WELCOME COLLEAGUES
On behalf of the California Chapters of the Solid Waste Association of North America
(SWANA), I am pleased to welcome you to the 48th Annual Western Regional Symposium and
Trade Show. For the past 48 years, the SWANA California Chapters have been presenting the
premiere Symposium in the nation.
This year’s is shaping up to be the best ever. We have chosen for this year the theme
“Navigating Global Conditions” because as we all know, California’s increased diversion goals
combined with China’s National Sword have created global conditions that are challenging for
industry professionals to stay afloat in California. How California deals with increased
recycling diversion goals along with how the world responds to global shifts in the recycling
commodity market will affect global enterprise of solid waste and recycling for years to come.
Decisions made now will determine the future of our industry. Thus this year’s technical
sessions tackle the question on how to navigate the global conditions surrounding the recycling
and waste markets head on.
This year I am especially excited to announce that David Biderman, SWANA Executive Director
and CEO, will be our guest as our key-note speaker Tuesday morning. You will not want to miss
this morning discussion.
Back by popular demand, our Wednesday Night Banquet will
showcase the spectacular food with a wonderful evening dinner
provided by Tenaya Lodge. We’ve also added a balcony no-host
bar with stunning views just prior to dinner that will be a way to
connect. Please join us as this night has been in the past, and will
continue to be, one of the highlights of the week.
Please, as you spend the week with us, take a little time to thank
our exhibitors, sponsors and volunteers, for their commitment to
the Symposium. Without them, this conference would not be
possible.
Finally, I want to thank YOU for attending and supporting the California Chapters of SWANA.
It is our members, friends and colleagues that make this event a great one!
Sincerely
Eric Zetz

This year we will showcase the South Gate Brewing Company at our Symposium. South Gate
Brewing Company is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, in Oakhurst, California – the South
Gate to Yosemite National Park. Famously heralded by naturalist
John Muir as ‘The Range of Light’, this stunning area is visited each
year by several thousand visitors from all over the world who come
to drink in the areas many natural treasures. Standing near the foot of
Deadwood Mountain, in the bustling Enterprise Center, South Gate
Brewing Company is near the crossroads of Historic ‘Golden Chain’
Highway 49, and Highway 41 leading into Yosemite National Park
and nearby Bass Lake. Surrounded by a
wonderland of natural beauty, Oakhurst is
the perfect spot to set up your ‘base camp’ and enjoy all the Sierras
have to offer, from hiking and biking, to camping, boating and
mountain climbing. Make sure you visit the South Gate Brewing
Company to refuel in their stylish and welcoming dining room and
sample some of their delicious handcrafted beer. We plan to have
South Gate Brewing Company handcrafted beer on tap at the
Wednesday night social following the Wednesday night banquet diner.
It promises to be one of the most desired evenings in recent Symposium history.
Continuing Education Units (CEU’s)
This year’s Symposium has another great slate of speakers and topics. Please take the time to
