TO THE CANVAS INFORMATION EVENING 2016

WELCOME

The current status of CanvasStudents have been using Canvas during Semester 1 this year to:• Access course material• Access and submit assessment tasks• Monitor their achievement• Engage in their learning

Parents and Caregivers• Login details are being emailed to you this evening – these will be

sent to the email address that you usually receive school emails through (but check other email addresses if unsure).

• You will now be able to support your student(s) by:• Keeping track of tasks and due dates• Monitoring achievement• Being aware of classroom administration

The email…….• The email that you

receive will include step-by-step instructions in regard to logging in for the first time, and then how to login after this point.

Some Considerations• Please understand that if you log in prior to next week you will be looking at

Semester 1 courses. New Semester 2 courses will appear next week.• Please be patient with our staff. We are still learning too. If something that

you need to be on Canvas isn’t there feel free to make courteous contact with that teacher.

• Please be aware that the appearance and functionality of the parent portal will continue to develop (with particular reference to those with multiple students).

The Markbook continued• Please understand that what you view for the remainder of this week will

be Semester 1 information. Semester 2 starts next week.• We are currently considering how best to move from a Semester 1

Markbook to a Semester 2 Markbook in Canvas.• This will be a focus for our Staff Day on Day 1 next term, so Semester 2

Markbook details should be correct after this date. • Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Some Further Considerations• Canvas is designed to function as an internal system at Cedar College.

Students can only message other students within their courses, and parents and caregivers can only message teachers, and their students. It is safe and secure.

• Please maintain the privacy of what you see on Canvas by not posting material elsewhere. What you see on Canvas needs to stay on Canvas.

• If you have a complaint or concern, Canvas is not the place to voice this.

Some Further Considerations• Teacher Contact through Canvas. If you message a Teacher

through the Inbox you can expect a response within 24 hours (not the evening the message was sent).

• The most reliable and immediate method of contact remains a phone call through the High School Office.

The Digital Pledge• The following outlines the expectations that we have of

students as they use Canvas. As parents and caregivers, we think it is important that you understand this, and model this behavior for students.

The Digital Pledge• I will not share personal information online about myself or

others.• I will not use bad language including acronyms or

abbreviations.• I will not have conversations or create posts that would be

inappropriate in the classroom.

The Digital Pledge• I will not threaten, insult, gossip, tease or be mean to others.• I will respect the feelings and ideas of others.• I will not add pictures or videos that would not be appropriate to

share in the classroom.• I will let my teacher know of any inappropriate content I find.• I will not share my login information with anyone else to use my

account (this includes students sharing login details with parents).

The Digital Pledge• I will not spam others.• I will try to use correct grammar and spelling, and will write

emails using the correct etiquette.• I understand that using ALL CAPITALS is considered yelling

and may offend others.• I will check with my teacher whenever I have questions about

any of the rules.

Concluding Comments• We are really enjoying Canvas and trust that you will find it useful as well.• This presentation (and links to videos) will be available on the College

website.• The Help is a useful resource.• If you have any questions about Canvas please contact Tim Maddern (Director
