Opening HymnWe sing our opening hymn:
O Lord, who hast my place assigned
v.1-3,6
LH 383 CAL 293
Matthias Loy (1828-1915)
O Lord, who hast my place assigned
1. O Lord, who has my place assigned
And made my duties plain,
Grant for my work a ready mind,
My wayward thoughts restrain.
O Lord, who hast my place assigned
2. Let me in Your most holy name
My daily task pursue:
Your glory be my only aim
In all I think and do.
O Lord, who hast my place assigned
3. May I submissive to Your will
In all my calling be,
And let me as Your servant still
Be faithful found to You.
O Lord, who hast my place assigned
6. May I in faith still stronger grow
While here I toil in love:
And when my work is done below,
Give me sweet rest above.

FIRST READINGThe first Reading for the Fourth Sunday
after Pentecost is written in Chapter 25 of Genesis, beginning at Verse 19.
Genesis 25:19-34
Jacob gains the birthright of Esau CEV
26
Genesis 25:19-34 19Isaac was the son of Abraham, 20and
he was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean from northern Syria.
Almost twenty years later, 21Rebekah still had no children. So Isaac asked the LORD to let her have a child, and the LORD answered his prayer.
27
Genesis 25:19-34 22Before Rebekah gave birth, she knew
she was going to have twins, because she could feel them inside her, fighting each other. She thought, "Why is this happening to me?" Finally, she asked the LORD why her twins were fighting, 23and he told her. "Your two sons will become two separate nations. The younger of the two will be stronger, and the older son will be his servant.“
28
Genesis 25:19-34 24When Rebekah gave birth, 25the first
baby was covered with red hair, so he was named Esau.
26The second baby grabbed on to his brother's heel, so they named him Jacob.
Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
29
Genesis 25:19-34 27As Jacob and Esau grew older, Esau
liked the outdoors and became a good hunter, while Jacob settled down and became a shepherd. 28Esau would take the meat of wild animals to his father Isaac, and so Isaac loved him more, but Jacob was his mother's favorite son.
30
Genesis 25:19-34 29One day, Jacob was cooking some
stew, when Esau came home hungry 30and said, "I'm starving to death! Give me some of that red stew right now!" That's how Esau got the name "Edom."
31Jacob replied, "Sell me your rights as the first-born son."
32"I'm about to die," Esau answered. "What good will those rights do me?”
31
Genesis 25:19-34 33But Jacob said, "Promise me your
birthrights, here and now!" And that's what Esau did. 34Jacob then gave Esau some bread and some of the bean stew, and when Esau had finished eating and drinking, he just got up and left, showing how little he thought of his rights as the first-born.
This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.
32
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV
R: : The Psalm is Psalm 119105Your word is a lamp that gives light
wherever I walk. C: 106our laws are fair, and I have
given my word to respect them all. R: 107I am in terrible pain! Save me,
LORD, as you said you would. C: 108Accept my offerings of praise
and teach me your laws.
33
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV
R: 109I never forget your teachings, although my life is always in danger.
C: 110Some merciless people are trying to trap me, but I never turn my back on your teachings.
34
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV
R: 111They will always be my most prized possession and my source of joy.
C: 112I have made up my mind to obey your laws forever, no matter what.
C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.
35
Second readingR: The Second Reading is written in
Chapter 8 of Romans, beginning at Verse 1.
Romans 8:1-11
You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit CEV
36
Second readingIf you belong to Christ Jesus, you won't
be punished. 2The Holy Spirit will give you life that
comes from Christ Jesus and will set you free from sin and death.
3The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak.
37
Second readingBut God set you free when he sent his
own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ's body to condemn sin. 4He did this, so that we would do what the Law commands by obeying the Spirit instead of our own desires.
5People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves.
38
Second readingEveryone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit
thinks about spiritual things. 6If our minds are ruled by our desires,
we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.
7Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God's laws. 8If we follow our desires, we cannot please God.
39
Second reading9You are no longer ruled by your
desires, but by God's Spirit, who lives in you.
People who don't have the Spirit of Christ in them don't belong to him.
10But Christ lives in you. So you are alive because God has
accepted you, even though your bodies must die because of your sins.
40
Second reading11Yet God raised Jesus to life! God's Spirit now lives in you, and he will
raise you to life by his Spirit. This is the Word of the LordC: Thanks be to God.

M: The Holy
Gospel is written in Chapter 11 of the Gospel according to St Matthew beginning at verse 16.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
41
M: 1That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee, where he sat down to teach. 2Such large crowds gathered around him that he had to sit in a boat, while the people stood on the shore. 3Then he taught them many things by using stories.
He said: A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field.
4While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds.
5Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn't very deep. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have enough roots.
7Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants.
8But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants produced a hundred or sixty or thirty times as much as was scattered. 9If you have ears, pay attention!
18Now listen to the meaning of the story about the farmer:
19The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message about the kingdom, but don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches the message from their hearts.
20The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away. 21But they don't have deep roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
22The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. But they start worrying about the needs of this life and are fooled by the desire to get rich. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything.
23The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and understand the message. They produce as much as a hundred or sixty or thirty times what was planted.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to you, O Christ.
M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the seed of God's word planted in our hearts. May it bear fruit in our lives.
C: Amen.
APOSTLE’S CREED
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
APOSTLE’S CREED
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
APOSTLE’S CREED
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen
*or: Christian; ‘catholic’ here means ‘universal’

Hymn
We sing :
Filled with the Spirit’s power
LH 773 CAL 293
John Raphael Peacey 1896-1971, alt.
58
Filled with the Spirit’s power
1. Filled with the Spirit’s power, with one accord
the infant church confessed its risen Lord:
O Holy Spirit, in the church today
no less your power of fellowship display.
59
Filled with the Spirit’s power
2. Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire,
that unity may be our great desire:
give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call,
and readiness in each to work for all.
•
60
Filled with the Spirit’s power
3. Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace
in your strong care all people of each race:
like wind and fire with life among us move
till we are known as Christ’s, and Christians prove.

Hymn
We sing :
And can it be, that I should gain
v. 1,4,5
TIS209/LH67 CAL 293
Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
63
And can it be, that I should gain
1. And can it be, that I should gain
An interest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain;
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be
That You, my God, should die for me?
64
And can it be, that I should gain
4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night:
Your eye diffused a quickening ray -
I woke; the dungeon flamed with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed You.
65
And can it be, that I should gain
5. No condemnation now I dread:
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Closing hymn
Sent out by God’s blessing
LHS 844 CAL293
Omer Westendorf 1916 - , alt.
88
Sent out by God’s blessing
1. Sent out by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the people of God from his dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended; O now be extended
the fruits of this service in all who believe.
89
Sent out by God’s blessing
The seed of his teaching, receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
His grace did invite us, his love shall unite us
to work for God’s kingdom and answer his call.
90
Sent out by God’s blessing
2. With praise and thanksgiving to God ever-living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
embracing his children of each tribe and race.
91
Sent out by God’s blessing
With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;
unite us as one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving
give honour to Christ and his name that we bear.
