So that you will have more enjoyment and longer life from your awning

If you buy an awning, you want to enjoy it for a long time. Especially from the

fabric and its colours. It is therefore sensible to obtain information about the

properties and qualities of fabric before buying. What are the most important

aspects of the fabric? How do the colours retain their brightness? What should

you remember for the cleaning? Our little guidebook will answer these and

other questions. So that your sunscreen will keep its shine for a long time!

As in radishes: Yarn dyeing has only a superfi cial eff ect.

There are many methods of applying the colour to an awning fabric. Spinneret technology is the most extensive method which results in the highest quality fi nished product. Each fi bre has the colour pigment locked in during the produc-tion process, even before they are pun into the yarn. This gives locked in depth to the colour – like the carrot it maintains its brilliance.

Yarn dying is superfi cial in comparison

Yarn/piece or core dyeing involves immersing the fi nished woven fabric into the colour dye. The result is fabric where the colour doesn’t run fully through the yarn. Because of this it will not remain permanently light resistant.

The location makes the fabric designBright, shining colours are classics for awnings. They guard against sun radiation but still let a lot of light onto the patio. But: They are also care-intensive – especially when they are exposed to dust, soot, dirt and leaves.

Look for the right fabric

Awning fabrics are technical textiles, they consist of either acrylic or polyester fi bre, both have the qualities. Acrylic is more colour fast, polyester has more stability in form. The larger the awning the more important the stability.

Rule of the thumb: the more restless, the less sensitiveIf your house is located on a busy street or if there are a lot of trees in the vicinity, you should select dark colours or a striped pattern. Because residues of leaves, pollen, soot and bird droppings cannot be so easily detected on a dark, multi-coloured surface. Your awning will retain its appearance longer.

1. Rule of the thumb: polyester for large awningsThe wider the awning, the more chance of fabric sag. Therefore polyester makes sense for larger awnings as it has better memory eff ect and recovery properties. This retains its stability in form.

2. Rule of the thumb: acrylic for intensive useAcrylic is the safer choice if the awning will be more frequently used, as the colours are maintained in this material. For this reason, acrylic is used for sun protection in restaurants, on boats or for cabriolet roofs.

Retract awning when it rains – let the wet awning dry

Care – but not the hard wayHigh-pressure cleaners and washing machines are absolutely taboo – they damage the fabric. The following procedure will clean the fabric and protect it at the same time: � Remove loose dirt, but do not rub! � Moisten the fabric with clear water, this will soften dried dirt.

Modern awning fabric has water- repellent properties. But persistent humidity is still potentially damaging

for your fabric. If it is retracted, the woven fabric cannot dry. Discolouration

is formed due to water stains. Furthermore, moisture favours fungal infestation. This will lead to mildew. Therefore: Always ensure that your awning is dry!

Note: Never extend the awning when it is raining. Otherwise water puddles could be formed, which would damage both fabric and awning. If the awning becomes wet, simply retract it wet and extend it again and leave it to dry at the next opportunity.

5 � Use lukewarm water (max. 40 °C) with a 5 to 10% solution of mild detergent.

� Us a sponge to apply the foam to the fabric, do not rub in!

� Leave the foam to work for 15 to 20 minutes. � Rinse with a lot of clear water. � Leave the fabric to dry.

Awning fabrics are high-performance products meeting stringent technical requirements. High-quality woven fabrics are used for the manufac-turing. Furthermore, laboratory tests guarantee the important properties such as stiff ness, tear- resistance, colour fastness and lots more. But the material could still change after some time, especially if the awning is frequently used.

Fresh colours by replacing the fabricFashions come and go, tastes change. Why not simply bring some fresh wind onto the patio? With a new fabric, your second living room will shine in a totally diff erent light.

By the way: Older awning woven fabrics used to be manufactured with the addition of a high quantity of formaldehyde. This substance im-proves the form stability of the fabric. For health reasons the content of formaldehyde has been reduced considerably. So don’t be surprised if your new awning is not quite as “stable” as your old one.

This cannot be excluded according to state of the art technology. These natural changes include sagging of the fabric between the seams of over-stretching in the region of the hem. The fabric could also exhibit creasing from the beginning. This is largely normal, irrespective of the manu-facturer.

Look out for the seal of qualityHigh-quality awnings must meet specifi c stand-ards. But beware: Not all fabrics have the same standard. Make sure when buying that the fabric is compliant with the colour fastness standard DIN EN 105 B04. Furthermore, your fabric should meet the current requirements with regard to UV protection, tear-resistance, weathering fast-ness and be environmentally friendly.
