Weekly Message Dear Parents,

Weekly message Dear Parents, This week all classes continued on their learning journey with only minimal interruptions for Kindergarten due to the roofing work. In other news I’d like to share: C Block Roofing As I have already mentioned, work on the roof of C Block is now well under way with the Western wing of the building completed today. R U OK Day Thursday was R U OK Day where we are asked to check up on friends and loved ones to ensure that they are feeling safe and secure. Mental health is an important part of all our lives, and with the added pressures caused by COVID-19, our community is seeing many people facing great difficulties in their lives. At our school, we are constantly checking on the emotional well-being of our students and staff members, so it was no surprise to see that Stage 2 students joined together to make a large R U OK graphic of hands to display at the front of our new building. Please follow their lead and check on your loved ones.

Don’t forget our P&C are still seeking recipes for the P&C Recipe Book. More information is located further on in this newsletter.

Teacher Professional Learning On Wednesday evening all of our teaching staff joined (through ZOOM) for a professional learning session focusing on the effective use of data to help inform us in our school planning. As our world becomes much more complex it is critical that, as teachers, we know where students are up to in their learning and where they need to go to next. Collecting and analysing information about their learning helps us to provide ongoing relevant and appropriate teaching. Kindergarten 2021 Enrolments We are currently planning for 2021 and need to know our student numbers. If you know anyone who is seeking to enrol their child in Kindergarten next year, please direct them to our Kindergarten Expo link on our webpage. Kindergarten Expo link Parent Survey Please don’t forget to complete our Parent Survey. Below is the link to the survey about our school. This will provide us with valuable feedback to inform our planning over the coming years as we develop our new School Improvement Plan. Please take the time to complete the survey as we value your input into our school. Parent Survey link School Canteen Closed Our school canteen remains closed until further notice, so students coming to school need to bring their own fruit, recess and lunch supplies. Please remember to pack a drink bottle as current health advice is not to use our bubblers for anything except filling water bottles. Use of Non-Educational Mobile Devices Last year, there was considerable publicity in the media around the use of mobile phones and other communicative devices (eg the new watches that are phone enabled) in schools, with a declaration that from the beginning of 2020, all such devices will be banned from all NSW Department of Education Primary Schools, unless there is a significant legitimate need ie a medical condition that requires monitoring etc by such a device. Consequently, if you believe your child needs to have a device at school, please fill in the attached form and return it to me via the school office, so that I can determine whether the need is a genuine one, and so that I have a record of the request on file.

Finally, please remember that we still need to be social distancing at all times. With the number of COVID infections again rising in NSW we need to be vigilant in keeping everyone safe. Kind regards Harold Cosier

Instructional Leader Update - Imaginative Writing

The current English and Geography integrated unit of work for Early Stage One is titled People Live in Places and the children are learning to write imaginatively. Throughout the unit students will explore the places they live in and belong to and develop an understanding of what makes a place special and how this may differ for different people. Students will also learn about the importance of looking after places and explore how the location of places can be represented. To inspire their creativity the children are using Loose Parts and Materials to support the imaginative writing process. Using the equipment the children are creating storyboards that show the characters, setting and sequence of events to create an imaginative piece of writing. Here are some lovely images that show the children creating their ideas.

Book Fair

Last week WPS held a book fair in the library. It was incredibly well attended by the children and supported at a distance by the parents. Thank you so much for all the support. Thanks also to the teachers who gave up their mornings to help out and to the library monitors who helped out at lunchtime. Many of the titles sold out and replacement copies had to be ordered. I understand and share the frustration of the children and the parents that are still waiting for their books. They have been ordered and I have been in contact with the supplier to try to hurry them along. Be assured that the moment they arrive they will be distributed to the eager children. Chess Congratulations to Olivia, Juliette, Lars and Quan who overcame cancellations and rescheduling to play all 3 rounds of the interschool chess competition in one afternoon recently. The team performed really well, representing their school with distinction.

USE OF NON-EDUCATIONAL MOBILE DEVICES

Dear Parents, Last year, there was considerable publicity in the media around the use of mobile phones and other communicative devices (eg the new watches that are phone enabled) in schools, with a declaration that from the beginning of 2020, all such devices will be banned from all NSW Department of Education Primary Schools, unless there is a significant legitimate need ie a medical condition that requires monitoring etc by such a device. As we have now entered 2020, this ruling is in place, so please be advised that unless there is a significant legitimate need, identified by you in the note below, such items are not to be brought to school. Consequently, if you believe your child needs to have a device at school, please fill in the attached form and return it to me via the school office, so that I can determine whether the need is a genuine one, and so that I have a record of the request on file. Please understand that if you choose to permit your child to bring such a device to school, we cannot be responsible for the security of these devices, and that its presence at school will be at your risk. Storage of such devices at school has been an ongoing issue, as school staff are understandably reluctant to be responsible for what is quite valuable property. Consequently, if the device is damaged or stolen, we will not be taking any responsibility for that loss or damage. My expectation would also be that the device would not be in use at school (ie while the student is on school grounds) unless specific permission is given. While I understand that mobile devices are very much a part of everyday life for all of us, our primary focus at school is learning, and we believe that it is far more effective for students to engage in that learning without the distraction that mobile devices potentially offer. Yours sincerely,

Harold Cosier Principal
