HUMANITIES REFERENCING GUIDE

Definitions Bibliography: A Bibliography is a list of sources (books, Internet articles, documentaries, journals, etc) that you have used in your research and/or referenced in your assignment. Every source you took notes from and/or referenced needs to be in your bibliography. The list, which appears at the end of an assignment, must be made in alphabetical order using the first letter of the entry for each sources. Reference List: A Reference List is a list of all sources (books, Internet articles, documentaries, journals, etc) that you have cited in your assignment. It does not include sources that were used in research but not cited. The list, which appears at the end of an assignment, must be made in alphabetical order using the first letter of the entry for each sources. In-text referencing / citing: When you ‘cite’ a source that means you quote direction from a source (called quoting) OR you use information from a source in your own words (called paraphrasing). When you do this, it’s important to refer to the author’s name in order to do some sort of evaluation or analysis of the source. Furthermore, you must include some minor details of the source in brackets – usually the author’s surname and the year (Wheeler, 2009). Sometimes it also includes the page number the quote / information came from.

HOW TO DO A BIBLIOGRAPHY OR REFERENCE LIST The information you need and how you record it depends on the type of source – so the ‘How To’

guide is split up according to type of source. Note that this style of bibliography is APA and is widely used at universities.

How to do ‘In-text’ referencing?

When citing any source within your writing you should include the following information in brackets: (Author’s surname, year, page number)

One historian in particular calls this event “a watershed moment in Australian history” (Spencer, 2014, p34).

If you don’t have a page number (eg. if it’s from a website) then simply don’t include a page number: (Author’s surname, year)

One historian in particular called this event “a watershed moment in Australian history” (Spencer, 2014).

If you use the author’s name within your sentence (a good idea) then there is no need to repeat the name within the brackets:

British historian Spencer called this event “a watershed moment in Australian history” (2014, p34).

You can if you like place the referencing immediately after the author’s name, rather than at the end of the sentence:

British historian Spencer (2014, p34) called this event “a watershed moment in Australian history”.

4.0 Conclusion – The High Line Exemplar

The New York City High Line is certainly an engaging space. It’s a long, elevated park thatintroduces a serene natural environment into one of the biggest, busiest cities in the world. It is having wonderful impacts in regards to the environment, there is no doubt about that.Socially, it’s a great place to meet people, to hang out, and to soak in the aesthetics of thegardens. The only problem with this space at the moment is that it is not performing welleconomically. It is cheap to maintain, however there is not a lot of business being done onthe High Line. The New York City Council’s Vision of creating affordable, green, andengaging spaces demands that this public space is making a profit for the city. Thisproposal achieves that vision. We can ensure that not only tourists and retirees, but alsolocal workers access the businesses there at peak eating times. The new bus stop, entryway and e-paper signs will increase the accessibility and marketability of the High Line. Itwill bring in local workers and it will ensure the long term economic success of this publicspace.
