Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:10 that people will be lost "because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved." Satan wants to distract us with the cares and deceits of this world. He does not want us to read and study our Bibles every day. He knows that we be- come weak and vulnerable when we fail to study. Our strongest defense is a shield of faith. How do we obtain that shield of faith to protect us? Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God." The more we study the word of God the stronger our faith will be. If we want to protect ourselves against Satan we must have a strong faith. In years past we in the churches of Christ were known as "walking Bibles" because brethren then studied their Bibles. But sad to say, this is no longer true because we have failed to study God’s word, as we should. But what happens when we fail to study God’s word and become spiritu- ally starved? 2 Peter 3:16 says that those who are "untaught and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the scriptures." We cannot understand God’s word unless we study it. And because of this Jesus says in Matthew 15:14, "They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a ditch." To keep from wandering around in spiritual darkness, let’s study God’s word so that "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalms 119:105). Why Study God’s Word

Just as we eat 3 meals a day to sustain our physical bodies, we

must also feast on God’s word daily to sustain our souls. If we don’t we

are in danger of losing our souls. God says in Hosea 4:6, "My people are

destroyed for a lack of knowledge." People will be lost because they did

not care enough to read and study God’s instruction book on how to go to

Heaven.

Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:10 that people will be lost "because

they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved." Satan

wants to distract us with the cares and deceits of this world. He does not

want us to read and study our Bibles every day. He knows that we be-

come weak and vulnerable when we fail to study. Our strongest defense

is a shield of faith. How do we obtain that shield of faith to protect us?

Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the

word of God." The more we study the word of God the stronger our faith

will be. If we want to protect ourselves against Satan we must have a

strong faith.

In years past we in the churches of Christ were known as "walking

Bibles" because brethren then studied their Bibles. But sad to say, this is

no longer true because we have failed to study God’s word, as we should.

But what happens when we fail to study God’s word and become spiritu-

ally starved? 2 Peter 3:16 says that those who are "untaught and unstable

twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the scriptures."

We cannot understand God’s word unless we study it. And because of

this Jesus says in Matthew 15:14, "They are blind leaders of the blind.

And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a ditch."

To keep from wandering around in spiritual darkness, let’s study

God’s word so that "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my

path" (Psalms 119:105). Let’s not endanger our souls by a lack of study

of God’s word. Let’s take time to study it daily. Michael Reed - Minister

hugged the preacher, making the waders of no

use.

“Thank you, Brother Boyd,” Albert

whispered. “Now please get my wife and son in

here and get them saved, too!”

After it was all over, and the church

folks had welcomed them into the church, hugs

had been given, tears shed, congratulations of-

fered, Albert walked back to the baptistery and

looked down into the water.

“Lord, I know you said that you have

washed away my sins. I know that must be some

powerful dirty water in there now. I promise you

that I will do my best. I am now yours to do with

as you want. Thank you.”

Jason

Tap Root—Conclusion

By Clint Hale The following evening, Albert, Bill, and Punkin put on their best clothes. Bill

carried her worn Bible and a notebook. She intended to pay attention, take notes, and

verify the preacher’s message. Albert was not sure what to expect. He had not been in

a church building, besides for weddings and funerals, in his entire life. Just a few hours

before, he would have not expected this to change. Still, there was no real expectation.

He felt cornered by his promise to Punkin and his own jumbled conscience. Punkin was

elated. He had inherited his mother’s piety, and his father’s tenacity. He knew that God

was opening a door that had always seemed locked. While he did not know the particu-

lars, he figured that was God’s business. He was just getting his Daddy to church.

Albert was mesmerized. During his life, he had heard many, if not most, of the

hymns, but they seemed to have a different feel on this night. The words connected to

him in a way that they had failed to do in the past. His singing voice left some to be

desired, and he often stumbled over the words, but the zest with which he engaged the

songs demonstrated the passion in his heart. When Brother Boyd began his sermon,

Albert was mesmerized.

Bill, being a good devout Baptist, was not so enthralled. The singing sounded

odd to her, since there was no piano or organ, as she was accustomed to hearing. In one

of the oddities of the Church of Christ, they eschewed all use of musical instruments in

worship. The sermon was not bad, but she was used to sermons. She took copious

notes, in order to verify that what this traveling preacher said matched up with the Scrip-

tures.

(After attending VBS services for the full time, God moved in Albert’s heart)

“Albert, you have come to be baptized into Christ. Do you renounce your sin-

ful past, and willingly accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Do you intend to

have your sins washed away? Do you make the good confession that Jesus Christ is the

Son of God?”

“I do,” Albert meekly warbled.

“Then I do baptize you in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy

Spirit, unto the remission of your sins…”

At that point, Albert was dunked completely under the water by the preacher.

As he was brought up out of the water, Brother Boyd continued:

“…raising you to walk in newness of life. Welcome Brother Albert.” Albert
