A Note from the Editor
PCC started off 2009 with the first official ride at the
new Putrajaya Mountain Bike park on New Years day.
Though not completed yet, most of the trails are ride-
able and we certainly took advantage of that. From
the rolling cross country trails to the beautifully
designed 4X track that had most of us going up for
many more runs. We even had the course designer
Didier show us a few moves that put most of the riders
to shame, despite his size.
Im sure as time goes along, the trail network there will
grow. As it is, the cross country trails link up beautifully
all the way to the base of the 4X track and then back to
the car park again in approximately a 9 to 10 km loop.
Perhaps in time, the trails will rival that of Kiara in
terms of technical prowess and Kemensah for the
diversity in climbs and long smooth flowing descents.
Last weekends RRI session attracted the fair share of
riders for its mosquito buffet spread, we being the
spread. However the less punishing gradients coupledwith the fun downhill section always bring the fun party
goers out to this trail. The mossie fest was a little
unbearable which encouraged most people to ride that
little faster. Hmm, interesting motivation.
As for the road ride via the newGenting Sempah, read
the ride report on all the fun and games that was had.
Supposedly a great new start.
Part of the initiative to make the newsletter more
interesting, we have Pedal to Crank: the Interviews as
part of our weekly (or perhaps fortnightly) addition.
We will be adding more to the newsletter in the future,
so keep a look out for it.
As for this week, dont forget that the TRAKS Trail Day
thats happening at Kota Damansara. Lend our friends
there a hand in building and learning a thing or two on
trail building.
See you on the trails.

Mud + Dirt by The English Nose
From the mossie fest of RRI, we take to the rolling planes of the old prison loop, essentially the original Stage 1 of
Presidential. Starting from Kajang Perdana, climb up all the way to the top and then a fabulous downhill to Nirvana
where we shall break for makan. Then we have the option of riding out to the tar road and back to KP via the quarry and
houses OR do the original Stage 4 way back. We decide when we get to the tar road. Not been here for a while so hopethe trail is all looking good

Pains by Swee Chuan Khoo
The one that bite the dust
"For beginners, go slow and its quite enjoyable", I was thinking, yeah, why not, I got nothing to do on the first day of 2009, and it has
been 5 months since my first PCC ride. Fighting the hangover from
too much vodka the night before, made myself ready to drive to
PICC early in the morning. Got there 30 minutes early, can't figure
out where is the nearest mamak stall, getting hungry.
Mistake number 1, no breakfast.
After the whole gang arrived at the meeting point in front of the
PICC guard house, the convoy departs to the park. While everyone
setting up their gear, my bike fell down to the road twice, bad
omen? I think so. Listened to all the experts chatting before the ride,
switchback? Tabletop? What?!?! 5 months of practice on Rover andBukit Hari Track can never prepare me for what it has in store for
me. Single track? What single track?
Mistake number 2, not knowing one's limit.
The rest of the riders were so helpful, giving encouragement and
advices. Special thanks to Choi for helping me got through the first
loop and found my water bottle. Well, basically I push my bike most of
the way. I owe you a power bar, and couple of beers to wash it down.
Too bad I can't able to complete the trails, after a "spectacular" fall
from the bike, the thigh was just too painful to even ride on the
normal flat road. Don't worry nothing serious, bruises here and there.
It was definitely a humbling experience for me; it taught me how
much I still need to learn.
Some advices that I gathered from the gang
1. Eat some breakfast before the ride
2. Apply the front brake gently, do not jammed it
3. Ride slow and relax
4. Setting the seat slightly lower to allow positioning the rear end
further back, more traction to the rear wheel
5. If the cliff is on the left side, push from the left leg.
6. Adjust the gear shifter higher so that I can still reach it while going
downhill with rear end way back
7. Do not look down at the front wheel, focus further in front
8. Don't panic (that was mine)
I will not give up, will practice more, finding some trails which can
provide a downhill to learn and practice the technique, maybe dream
trail? but one day, after few more months of trail ride under my belt, I
will come back to the park and actually enjoy it.
Thanks to Alvin for organizing the ride, the rest of the gang for the
advice and encouragement.

Grumbles by the Ed
It is interesting how its easier to wake up in the mornings when
we are going on rides, as opposed to going to work. The normal snooze
button was never required, because I rolled out of bed before the alarm
went off. Perhaps it was that I had ridden 3 times more than I usually
do in a week. Got to love public holidays and the fact that the in-laws
are looking after the kids whilst the wife and I hit the trails.
RRI being the normal beginners trail begged for some heavy sprinting
(because you could) and continuous movement to not only get a great
work out from it, but also to keep the mossies at bay. Alas, that was not
to be.
Ignoring the urge of the bowels and the teasing turtle head, I left the
house before unloading last nights dinner. At the beginning of the trail
as both Alvin and I were bringing up the back due to a leaking Camelbak,
I urged Alvin to continue on, and proceeded to fertilise the land.
Most RRI riders will know that staying in 1 position for any more
than 20 seconds is just a bad idea in this area. I was there for a little
more than 5 minutes.
As the group had taken a slightly different route from normal (much
better in my opinion, as it rides in a loop, with almost no back
tracking), I came to the junction with Alvin doing doughnuts whilst
waiting for me. With Yong and son coming up the rear, we kept
moving to re-join the group with mossies in tow.
Standard climbs to the radar tower, and then down the downhill
sections which have eroded slightly, I was mildly surprised that
almost all the riders didnt really want to stop. Woohoo !! The ride
kept flowing on till we got back to the car, and for some White Town
Old Coffee action. All over and done in about 1.5 to 2 hours
depending on whose opinion we took as the start time.
Perhaps as one of the riders recommended, a mossie coil in a
container hanging from the Camelbak would probably be an
essential accessory for a ride here in the future. But somehow,
unless most riders keep the mindset ofgo go go, we will continue to
donate our share of haemoglobins to the our pesky stone age
surviving species.
The week that was (4th
January 2009) T+G
The Tar and Grime officers did well in organizing a sweet and
short ride on Sunday - PCC's first ride of 2009! (clap clap cheer cheer). It
was none other than Genting Sempah, a new and improved route which
started from the mamak next to the Sekolah Teknik instead of the usual
HOA start. The lovely smell of kopi and nasi lemak sure did good for
some of the riders who arrived early on empty stomachs. For yours
truly, it was a chilly morning, but a good one for riding nonetheless.
Needless to say, Genting Sempah was packed with cyclists on this
promising first Sunday morning of the year.
We started off the ride together, with the tall, skinny ride leader leading
the way to HOA which is about 4-5kms away from the mamak. Then as
usual, once the climb started, it was every man (and woman) for his
own. Along the way, we passed a bunch of cute children pedalling their
way up with a support car accompanying them. The little rascals (of
course, this I mean in the affectionate manner of speech) made us look
like giant huffing puffing old farts who don't deserve support cars to
save our asses.
There was something in the air at Genting Sempah that seemed to
attract more and more cyclists (and monkeys too, there were so many
today!) as the morning progressed. Must be the smell. Or pheromones?
Are we any better than insects? Wacky thoughts aside, I later caught up
with a group of mature-looking cyclists (the previous L2A folk) on one of
the hairpins. Good mornings, hellos, the usual small talk.

Words by Hsing Ling
On I went. Eh? Who's that? Whoa, a little kiddo on a mountain bike
tackling the climb. Salute. On and on. More monkeys.
When I reached the last hairpin of the day before the workshop (yes,
the famous one with the splendid view of the mountain and clouds
which we don't get to enjoy anyway) I was greeted by the ever friendly
headwind. Cold. Yes, very cold. (sucking in dripping mucous) Good. All
the more incentive to reach the workshop as fast as I can to get closer
to warm bodies.
I'm at the workshop. My bad. Still cold. Guess the warm bodies idea
didn't quite work out. Many riders were regrouping and deciding
where to continue. A few from our PCC group decided to go on to
Janda Baik. There were at least two other cycling groups apart from us
at the workshop. And a dog (a very cute dog).
After Tall Skinny Ride Leader made sure everyone had reached, we
started the descent back to the mamak. The descent was quite
uneventful, apart from the monkeys trying to get in the way. Passed
more roadies and mountain bikers who were on their way up. Upon
reaching the mamak, my meter read 44 km. A very sweet and short
ride that deserves yummy warm nasi lemak! Happy Sunday New Year,
everyone!

Spare Wheels Project
Your friends have heard you rant about the drops and
the endos and have seen the breathtaking scenery
from your flickr, Facebook and not to forget the fridge
door photos.
They finally want to get off their bum and join you for
a ride but running behind you, sitting on your top tube
or dinking them are probably not the best ways for
them to experience it with you. Of course, he/she
could be shit hot, then no one would probably say
anything.
In any regards, PCC has the SPARE WHEELS PROJECT
underway. Currently made up of generous owner's
bikes, they are available for people to borrow and
ride. Some of them have been ridden more than the
villageernever mind. They've been ridden a lot.
Boon Foo has recently offered his assistance to put
together a few hard tails, and together with what we
have now, we should be able to cater for height
ranging from Snow White's pals to the Yang Mings
who want to give this ago.
In all SERIOUSNESS, if you have someone who wants
to join us for a ride, please do not hesitate to drop us
a line and we WILL do our best to get them a bike for
the next suitable ride. Take note that there will be a
$15.00 charge to cover expenses such as ferrying thebike around, washing it and of course its ongoing
maintenance.

PEDAL TO CRANK Get to know your PCC Riders....
ROB THE ENGLISH NOSE SCHORR
PCC Now Gone President 2008
M+D Ride Director 2009
Having lead the club brilliantly for 2 years, this stupid fast, crazy fit
Englishman from Sussex, now more Malaysian then some
Malaysians I know, is this years M+D Ride Director. The standard
list of questions have returned with some answers that perhaps
we didnt really need to know.
1. When did you start riding and who got you involved?
Probably about 1983. My brother would have been the likely
suspect.
2. Why did you start riding?
To get away from my brother.3. Why do you continue riding?
Fresh air, fitness, freedom, friends. Just for the love if bikes really.
4. What (or Who) do you ride now? Give us the juicy details.
MTB 99% of the time, but a bit of road touring never goes a miss. I
find riding behind vehicles exhausting.
My bike - the Santa Cruz Superlight. 12 year old design and not
changed. Simple and functional, just like me.
5. What and why (is it) your favourite trail?
Broga. Rolling hills, beautiful vistas, fresh air, not too many
leeches or mozzies.
6. What type of rider would you consider yourself?
Frantic: as in fast and flowing trails are what I enjoy with the odd
sprint for extra speed and the odd jump thrown in for good
measure.
7. What is your dream bike?
Very tough question. I think a Honda Africa Twin or a 1983 Suzuki
GSX 1100. Bicycle - er I think a Titus FTM Exogrid with new Cobolt
Wheels.
8. What is your favourite ride food (include drink)Carmen's Meusli bar, rasins, chocolate and water mixed with
isotonic drink.
9. Do you fantasize about riding when you are not?
Occasionally, quite often on a Monday
10. Do you or did you sleep naked with your bike?
Yes
