ITITITITIT really is a great time to get a taste ofluxury cruising at prices we’ve never seenbefore – or to experience a superior shipsailing new itineraries in Australianwaters. For example, in March next year, theQueen Mary 2 is embarking on its first-ever Australian coastal voyage. Departing from Sydney on 8 March2010, the six-night voyage features theQM2’s maiden calls to Adelaide andFremantle, which would be a reallyexciting time to be onboard as an Aussie. Prices start at $2199pp and cabins arestill available. Talking to ecruising.travel’s businessdevelopment manager Richard Davey, Irealised just what a significant opportunityit is! He pointed out that Australians used tohave to pay about $10,000 for aminimum three-week cruise on the QM2,but now you can have a shorter samplefor a quarter of the cost. As Richard said, “You can get greatvalue and luxury at the same time -whereas before now, value and luxurywere usually mutually exclusive terms!” US cruise lines are also a great bargainwith their fares priced in US dollars, andthe Australian dollar sitting at around 93US cents today. I was talking this week to people fromSeaDream and Silversea Cruises whoboth reported that 2009 has been thebiggest year of bookings from Australians. Karen Christensen, Silversea regionaldirector Australia, said bookings havebeen so strong that they have decided tointroduce ‘Circumnavigation Voyage ofAustralia’ aboard Silver Shadow inJanuary to February 2011. The 30-day cruise will take in smallerports including Willis Island, Cooktown,Broome, Exmouth, Albany, Port Lincoln,Kangaroo Island and Geelong, as well asstate capitals Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart,Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin. “The cruise will go on sale in the nextcouple of weeks and those interested injoining the voyage will need to makeadvance registrations with their travelagents to ensure the best suites,”Christensen told Cruise Weekly. Local luxury for the budget buyer!Never before has there beena better time to book a luxurycruise, with huge discountsand shorter segments inAustralia now offered byhigh-end cruise lines. SILVERSEA’S SILVER WHISPER AND NORTH STAR

RRRRReadeadeadeadeadyyyyy, on your Mar, on your Mar, on your Mar, on your Mar, on your Marquesas, go!quesas, go!quesas, go!quesas, go!quesas, go!Location: Port of Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia, 9 deg 48.33 W, 139 deg01.86 W. If there ever was a perfect outpost as sanctuary for troubled artists, refuge for waywardseamen and magnet for restless adventurers, then the far flung islands of the Marquesaswould have to be it. Sure, you can catch one of the easy flights from Tahiti and bum around, but for anauthentic arrival, come as Cook, Porter and Melville did; aboard ship. Unless your name is Packer, whose private ship is moored in Tahiti as you read this, youcould not conduct a more thorough exploration of this dramatic, geologically youthfularchipelago than with the Compagnie Polynesienne de Transport Maritime (CPTM) sailingyear round with Aranui 3. For the trivia-minded, this the locationfavoured by the disturbed French master,Paul Gauguin, and publicity-exhaustedBelgian pop idol, Jacques Brel. Both, despite contrasting, if short, relations with the locals, also chose to beburied here. As with all true adventure cruises, this isa voyage of discovery and learning. Each island port reveals a little more ofthis fascinating culture and its catastrophic demise. Although modern Marquesans enjoy comforts provided by their French colonialoverlords, the 8000 ‘survivors’ are the tail end of a prominent civilisation that numberedaround 100,000 until the beginning of the 19th Century. Although freedom to practice (most) ancient arts and customs is restored, white manhas a lot to answer for in the Marquesas. The Aranui 3 is the CPTM’s fifth vessel to ply this route, an exclusive freight/passengeroperation that has grown from humble beginnings over 50 years. This newest vessel was built to a German design in Romania in 2003 and flies theFrench flag. GRT is 7000 tons and passenger capacity is 198 across four grades fromfancy suites (14) with balcony, nine deluxe staterooms, 63 standard cabins and 18 berthsin three dormitory-style rooms. Expect to spend your time mingling with worldly folks from all over. Our near-capacity complement consists of mainly Germans and French, with ascattering of Americans, Canadians, Brits and sundry EU countries. We are bankers and academics, builders and cab-drivers, flashpackers and corporaterefugees with an average age of around 60, (but under 50s should also be encouraged). The voyage is a great opportunity to exercise second language skills and swap tall taleswith seasoned travellers, friends are made easily in this eclectic human trail mix.

With any cruise like this you need personalversatility -the schedule will almost certainlybe interrupted or altered en route due to theprimary function of freight delivery. Difficult cargo and sea conditions will alsodictate time in port and shore activitiesoffered, there’s no point bleating “... but thebrochure says ...!” because it warns you that[stuff] will happen and it does. In my mind, none of this is sufficient reasonnot to go because the Marquesas are

definitely one of the few remaining corners of the world worth every effort. Book through a specialty cruise office, discounts are sometimes offered and ask lots ofquestions.
