It is important to realize that use of appropriate technology does not mean turning the clock back to the 18th or 19th century. Although the technology involves simple, easy-to use and repair designs, it is based on sophisticated, 20th-century technologies. One example is the inven-tion of photovoltaic, or solar cells that convert solar energy, a renewable

energy source, into electricity for homes and businesses.

One reason that cats are happier than people is that they have no newspapers.

The reflections keep flowing as Facebook has published its 2014 Year in Review. In it, the social network takes a moment to remember the chal-lenges and triumphs of 2014 and celebrate the moments that connected

whole. The World Cup, for example, drove more conversation than any other

event in Facebook history. Elsewhere, people shared more than 17 million Ice Bucket Challenge videos on the site to raise awareness for the neuro-

degenerative disease ALS.

7 Tricks to Write an Effective Cold EmailI speak with people all the time who ask me how I got in touch with some-one at a movie studio or a management company. When I tell them it was through a cold email, I always get the same response: “Those work? How

did you get to them and actually get a response?”

While a lot of work that I do comes through previous relationships and someone connecting me to someone else, I certainly don't know every-one and I have found cold email to be very successful in building business

opportunities, but only if it is done the right way.Below are some tips and tricks that I have found work well for me in

making cold email effective:

Say goodbye to VLC as Windows 8.1 gets native MKV support

Xbox One received native Matroska Multi-media Container (MKV) file support earlier this year and now, Micro-soft has extended support to its current operating system. As of writing, those run-ning Windows 8.1 can play MKV files without having to download a third-party media player.MKV files are often associated with pirated movies and television shows found on BitTorrent and other popular file-sharing platforms. Windows’ lack of native support for MVK has led to the popularity of standalone media players like VLC but that could soon change.By baking support right into Windows, Microsoft is also giving the open standard container a much-needed boost of legiti-macy. And while some may argue that support has arrived a bit late with Windows 10 looming on the horizon, it's better late than never in my book.Speaking of, Windows 10 will also carry native MKV support in addition to support for Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) files. FLAC is a lossless audio compression format that provides much higher audio quality compared to lossy formats like MP3. Despite being around since 2001, it still hasn’t really taken off even with the advent of high-quality streaming sources and dedicated FLAC audio play-ers.As for MKV support in Windows 8.1, it’s worth point-ing out that it’s still limited by the operating system’s codec and subtitle support. I haven’t tried it out yet but if it’s just terrible, I suppose VLC is always an option.

7 Innovators That Changed Retail Forever

Famed management expert Peter Drucker once said, “If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old.” As simple as this advice is, innovative thinking is still the exception, not the rule. So

when a company does change the direction of its industry for the better, it’s certainly something to celebrate.

In that spirit, I’ve put together a short list of my retail superheroes -- seven innovators who revolutionized the way people shop. These pioneers weren’t necessarily the first in their fields, but they will most certainly be remembered for their willingness to embrace

original thinking.http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/239561

As someone that has never been a morning person, the dreaded sound of an alarm clock is probably the least pleasant way to start my day. I do

alright if another person is around to wake me up but that luxury isn't always at my dis-

posal. An app called Wakie, however, could certainly better my odds of being woken up by another

human.Described as a social alarm

clock, Wakie lets those needing to get up at a specific time –

sleepyheads – set the date and time for their “alarm.” When the time comes, the app will search for

someone that is awake – Wakies, as they are called – and initiate an in-coming call.

It’d no doubt be a bit awkward to get a call from a complete stranger each morning but for some, it’s better than the alternative of a blaring alarm. And who knows, perhaps you’ll meet some interesting people in

the process or even strike up a friendship. In the event there are no Wakies to call you, the app will play an automated

message instead.Wakie co-founder and CEO Hrachik Adjamian said a lot of people keep

hitting the snooze button on their alarm clocks, making it harder to wake up. According to their research, a one-minute conversation with a stran-ger wakes up the brain with a 99 percent guarantee. That’s impressive

when you consider how easy it is to simply hit the snooze button and ac-cidentally fall back asleep.

Wakie has been available for Android and Windows Phone for quite some time but just debuted on iOS. It’s available free of charge although the

company is planning a premium version that’ll include benefits like longer calls and the ability to pick the gender of the person you connect to.

8 Simple Tips for Giving the Best Business Holiday Gifts

During the holiday season, many entrepreneurs show their gratitude to business partners by sending greeting cards and giving corporate gifts. These gestures often vary in scale and cost, but one thing I have found consistent in my years of running businesses is the astonishing amount

of wastefulness due to completely irrelevant or useless gifts that end up at the bottom of a wastebasket or, worse, in a white elephant gift ex-

change.

Choosing effective and impactful corporate gifts for your business part-ners is not as difficult as many believe. Just follow these few tips and get

the best bang for your buck.

5 Tips for Coping With Stress at Work Starting First Thing in the Morning

You go to work, either as an employee or an entrepreneur -- it doesn’t matter which -- because you are there to perform your best. You want to love what you do. You want to be paid well. You want to be appreci-

ated. You don’t want your job to be what crushes you or makes you feel sick.

However, sometimes you can start the day with a great attitude, ready to be challenged. But then suddenly it’s all blown apart by the nasty looks from someone you are eager to please, the negative gossip that brings

you down or the demanding boss or client who is never happy.

What to do? You need coping techniques and strategies that are actually proven to work.
