Learning Project – Term 6 Week 5– Year 1 1 Weekly Maths Tasks Weekly English Tasks This week, we will be learning about division. Your child will have done a little bit of learning about this in Reception, but for the most part this is a new topic. Please work through the teach sheets carefully and go as slowly as you need to. We have decided not to cover written division ‘number sentences’ (such as 8 ÷ 4 = 2) but to focus on practical and pictorial approaches. This was decided after consultation with Year 2 teachers, who will cover this topic in more depth in September. Watch this wonderful story clip with your grown-up at home. The story is set in a fantasy world and is all about a man who is sailing his boat through the sky when he comes across something amazing…! https://www.literacyshed.com/onceinalifeti me.html After watching, discuss the following question together: What happened in the story? How did the man feel at the start of the story? How did he feel when the turtles flew over? What did you like/ dislike about the story? Main activity Today you are going to imagine that you are the Sky Explorer in the story and you are going to use your senses to imagine what it would be like standing on the deck of the boat. Watch the clip again and then write or draw some ideas under each of the senses on the grid in the resource pack. Think about what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste whilst standing on the deck of the boat. Keep hold of your senses grid as we’ll be using our ideas in tomorrow’s English lesson! Tuesday Take a look at your senses grid from yesterday. Re-watch the story clip and add any extra ideas!

The story is set in a fantasy world and is all about a man who is sailing his boat through the sky when he comes across something amazing…! https://www.literacyshed.com/onceinalifetime.html After watching, discuss the following question together:

What happened in the story?

How did the man feel at the start of the story?

How did he feel when the turtles flew over?

What did you like/ dislike about the story?

Main activity Today you are going to imagine that you are the Sky Explorer in the story and you are going to use your senses to imagine what it would be like standing on the deck of the boat. Watch the clip again and then write or draw some ideas under each of the senses on the grid in the resource pack. https://www.literacyshed.com/onceinalifetime.html Main activity Imagine you are the Sky Explorer. Write a postcard to a friend to describe what you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste on the deck of your boat. Once you’ve finished, have a go at adding an address and drawing a picture on the front of your postcard. You can find an example postcard, template and some sentence starters to support your writing in the resource pack. Wednesday Can you remember the type of animals that come floating by in the story? That’s right, they were turtles! Today we’d like you to choose a different animal to come floating by in the story. Use ‘show, don’t tell’ to describe the animal without saying what it is. Read my example below. Can you guess the animal I’m describing? It is a beautiful, flying insect with two colourful wings that are symmetrical. You can often spot these animals in your garden or park! This animal starts its life as a different type of animal before making a cocoon and transforming into a… Main activity Write a couple of sentences to describe your new animal but remember not to say what it is! Once you’re finished, share your description with a family member or friend and see if they can guess your animal! You

could also send in your description via ClassDojo for your friends to guess! Thursday Today we are going to write our own endings to the story! Watch the clip again. https://www.literacyshed.com/onceinalifetime.html Imagine you are the Sky Explorer. Where do the turtles take you? Share some ideas with your grown-up at home. Take a look at my example story ending in the resource pack. Can you spot any of the following Year 1 skills?

Capital letters and full stops

Finger spaces

Neat, cursive handwriting

Adjectives

‘and’ to join sentences Main activity Using the template within the resource pack or some paper, write your own ending to the story. Once you’ve finished, re-read your writing and check for any mistakes. Have you included all of the Year 1 skills above? Challenge Draw a picture of the place you fly to with the turtles! Friday Watch the story clip again.

Do you like the Sky Explorer’s boat?

What do you like about it?

How does the boat fly?

What material do you think it is made

from?

Do you think it would have taken a

long time to build?

In the resource pack, take a look at the Sky Explorer’s labelled picture of his boat. Main activity Today you are going to draw and label your own sky boat! Think carefully about the material your boat will be made from, how it will fly and any exciting features it might have! We have also included some examples in the resource pack. Once you’ve drawn your boat, label it with adjectives and nouns e.g. shiny windows. We’d love to see a picture of your amazing sky boat! Challenge: write some sentences to describe your sky boat.

Please practise reading and spelling the last 6 months of the year:

Let’s Experiment

For this week’s experiment, let’s make our drawings come to life! All you need is a smooth surface like a glass bowl or plate, some water and a whiteboard marker. Follow the instructions in the Creative Resource Pack to make your drawings move around. You can also watch a video of the experiment here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56diV8cdeDc&feature=youtu.be What stories can you make up with your moving drawings? Can you pull your drawings out of the water?

Let’s Explore

Have a go at making a smelly magic potion using things you can find on a walk in the woods or in your garden. What wish will you make with your special magic potion? You can find some instructions here: http://www.treetoolsforschools.org.uk/activities/pdfs/pdf_woodland_potions.pdf

Let’s Create

We have really been enjoying origami in school, and we saw some fantastic whales from home learners last week. This week, we are going to make a twirling bird and a talking dog! Please find the instructions in the Creative Resource Pack. Tip: when we tried this out, we found it helped if an adult makes the square to start with.

As an extra challenge, can you say and write all 12 months of the year in order? Can you tell your grown-up which month comes before and after certain months?

Monday – Teach time!

This week our maths will be all about sharing things out equally. Can you

remember what equal means?

In Reception, you practised sharing things our fairly. Can you share these sweets

out between the 2 children?

How many do they get each? Use counters or toys to help if you like!

That’s right! They get 2 sweets each!

The easiest way to divide things up fairly is to give each person one each and

take turns until you run out of sweets!

Monday – Your turn!

Find some objects around your house and share them equally!

Can you share…

6 spoons between 2 drawers

8 toys between 4 teddies

10 peas between 2 cups

12 sweets between 3 bowls

Challenge

Can you think of 3 more objects you could share into groups?

Draw a picture of the objects after you have shared them!

Tuesday – Teach time!

Yesterday we shared out some objects equally. In maths this is called

division (practise saying the word so you remember it!)

Division has a symbol just like adding (+) or taking away (-). It looks like

this!

Yesterday we learned how to divide by sharing. Today, we are going to

divide by grouping.

Look at the strawberries

There are 20 strawberries in the whole set (count them!)

They are shared into groups of 5 (double check!)

How many groups are there? _______

Friday – Teach time!

Today we are going to divide using arrays. We used arrays last week when we were multiplying!

They look a bit different, but it’s just like the pictures we did yesterday.

Look at this example:

How many groups are there? 3

Just like when we multiplied, the groups are separated by the boxes in the

array.

Here is another example:

The whole set is 15.

It is divided into

groups of 5.

Mrs Bufton’s Art Distance Learning

Hi Awesome artists! I hope that you are all well and enjoying being creative.

This week we are going to make some shadows. I am hoping that the sun will be shining otherwise you can use a torch or a lamp.

You could:

- Grab a toy and create a shadow with it onto some paper then draw around and colour in the shadow.

- Experiment with making drawings at different times of the day. What happens to the shadow?

- You could create an exciting background for your shadow art with paint, crayons or collage.

Page 36: Weekly Maths Tasks Weekly English Tasks · Watch this wonderful story clip with your grown-up at home. The story is set in a ... white fluffy clouds brown rope snapping smelly turtles

Learning Project – Term 6 Week 5– Year 1

36

- You could chalk a shadow of an object on the ground if you have some chalk.

- You could grab someone in your house and draw their shadow or ask them to draw you.

- You could use some foil to sculpt some shapes, and draw the shadows that they create. You may have to tape them onto a solid surface.

- You could make some shadow shapes with your hands.

If you are feeling adventurous, have a look at this amazing shadow art by Malaysian artist Red Hong Yi.

She places pieces of paper and other objects in a way that create a shadow picture when light is projected onto them.

Can you create something similar?

The artist Bridget Riley is famous for her optical illusion art. Have a look at some of her art. What do you think of it?
