Sesquicentennial UPDATE The Sesquicentennial Committee is pleased to announce that our third focus in the celebration of our yearlong 150th anniversary celebra-tion is learning about and intentionally supporting mission work that takes place at our church. Our church members continually find ways to offer support here in Tupelo with initiatives like Helping Hands, Habitat for Humanity, and Weekend Backpack, and we have taken active roles in missions around the world through our mission trips to the Mississippi Delta, Mexico, Africa, Costa Rica, and other locations. We are excited to share that we will culminate our focus on missions this year with a commissioning service for the mission trip to Honduras on Sunday, June 26. We challenge you to take an active role in one of the mission initiatives at our church, and we in-vite you to make a priority of attending the church service on Sunday, June 26 as we recognize the Honduras mission trip team as a part of our sesquicentennial celebration.
Fun Facts: Did you know that First United Methodist Church of Tupelo is sending 25 church members with a total group of 70 people (other participants from Harrisburg Baptist Church Tupelo; Columbus, MS; and Arkansas) to Honduras later thissummer? The focus of this mission trip will be on building houses, supporting schools, and providing food. The team will be building 9 houses in the Tierra del Padre area, which has been set aside as a new community, and they will work to build a school in this area. They will partner with the USAid organization to provide food to the people in the area and purchase food locally to support the economy. Furthermore, our team will be connecting back with the school in Diamante that our church helped build and that currently houses desks that were donated from the Tupelo Public School District. During the Honduras mission trip that took place in January, the team distributed school supplies to the school in Diamante and took pictures of all the students. We are pleased to share that Sandra Penson came up with the idea to print all of these pictures for the students to give to them this trip with additional supplies. In terms of how you can get involved, our church family has been faithfully offering financial support to help fund the construction of the houses. We ask that you consider making a donation that can go to the house construction or to the support of the wells or the purchase of school supplies, uniforms, and local food. We want to flag that there might be a need for trans-portation support of this mission team, so please reach out to the FUMC office if you are interested in providing this necessary support. Additionally, please con-tinue to pray for the members of our congregation and broader faith family that will be participating in this worthwhile mission trip. —The Sesquicentennial Committee
