In a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday over the drastic depreciation of the national currency against foreign currencies, Prime Minister Ahmed bin-Daghr said Yemen needs an economic summit with the Arabian Gulf countriesto look into Yemen’s situation.

In September 2014 Yemen saw a coup by the Houthi militia that evolved in 2015 to a war that has since plunged the country in an unprecedented humanitarian and economic crises including the devaluation of the Yemeni Riyal from a pre-war exchange rate of nearly YR 214 to the present YR 800versus one US dollar.

“Yemen needs a Yemeni-Gulf economic conference at a summit-levelto look into its situation,” said bin-Daghr, adding, “We cannot win the battle againstHouthis and their Iranian allies in wretched conditions the Yemeni people

suffer.”

Bin-Daghr called on the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to streamline the use of their granted deposit for Yemen’s central bank and Yemeni companies and traders who want hard currency to import commodities to their country.

He praised Saudi Arabia for granting Yemen an oil products grant and most recently a USD 200 million deposit to Yemen’s central bank to shore up the Riyal, saying the deposit will put an end to this appalling devaluation of the Riyal.

He also called for neutralizing the country’s resources of oil, gas and taxes.

He also said:”I call on the Houthi rebels to cede to the government (at least) the financial authority and therefore deal responsibly with the Central Bank in Aden. In

return, we are ready to bear the full responsibility in managing the economic, financial and fiscal policy and bear any consequences for that before our people and the international community.”

Bin-Daghr pointed to the fact that the root cause of this economic deterioration and continuous depreciation of the Riyal is the Houthimilitia’s sabotage of Yemen’s historical transformationby mounting the 2014 military coup and triggering the ongoing conflict in 2015.

Government warns of riots harming Yemen’s national

securityThe Cabinet has continued its meetings on Wednesday for discussing current conditions and latest political, security and economic conditions, especially those associated with improving the price of local currency against foreign currencies.

Presided over by Prime Minister Ahmad Obeid bin-Daghr, the meeting confirmed support to President Hadi as legal president to the Republic of Yemen and his federal project rejecting Houthi and separatist rebellion and all terrorist acts.

The cabinet valued the recent Saudi grant of USD 200 million and confirmed that the grant will help keeping the economic condition stable.

The government demanded unifying the financial and administrative cadre to all military and security units in the framework of the financial and administrative cadre of the ministries of defense and interior and calling different parties not to pay salaries to illegal military and security

units.

The Minsters Council directed a call to the so –called “the Transitional Council” to work politically and abandon any military and security units do not work under the legal authority.

It also called all parties to return to political activities away of calls to riots, which will harm all and will not exclude anyone.

The council urged the political parties, social organizations and Yemeni people to reject sabotage acts and regional incitement calls called by some to undermine the state and its efforts of normalizing life and stressed unifying fronts for protecting the unity of Yemen and its security and stability.

The cabinet denounced the kidnapping of the Head of Islah Charitable Society in Aden Mohammad al-Shugaina and killing him barbarically.

The council urged the security authorities in Aden to shoulder responsibility tostrongly face the serial of chaos and crimes

and protect citizens, warning of any little doing.

“The sole beneficiary from this chaos are Houthi rebels and their allies in terrorist Iranian regime, which support their plots and political calls for chaos and violence and security and service failure for propagating legality and Saudi-UAE-led Arab Coalition have failed in managing the country and handing it over to violent and terrorist groups and failed to provide security and peace to Yemeni people,” said the ministers.

In a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday over the drastic depreciation of the national currency against foreign currencies, Prime Minister Ahmed bin-Daghrblamed the Houthi militia’s coup of September 2014 and secondly other causes for “the collapse” of the national currency.

In September 2014 Yemen saw a coup by the Houthi militia that evolved in 2015 to a war that has since plunged the country in an unprecedented humanitarian and economic crises including the devaluation of the Yemeni Riyal from a pre-war exchange rate of nearly YR 214 to the present YR 800 versus one US dollar.

“The causes that led to the collapse of the Riyal are the Houthi coup and new political causes which the Houthis, the separatists and the terrorists and their backer conducted in sync,” said bin-Daghr.

“But our defense of the supreme national interests will not falter the least bit, we will safeguard Yemen united, federal and

new,” he said.

“It is no secret that the attacks on the government come from these three parties together with Iran.”

“Houthis have destroyed Yemen, therefore we have a long time to suffer as a result,” he emphasized.

Citing the rebels’ operation of their own de factocentral bank and collection of revenues to it in Sana’a as another setback to the government, he said: “There are two financial and fiscal policy administrations , there is a Houthi mess up that aims to destroy our country.”

The Houthi coup and forcing of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government out of Sana’a in2015 “caused the state to lose 85% of its financial resources.”

Furthermore, he said, “in the last two weeks Houthis assigned some banks and money exchangers to buy the US dollar from all over Yemen at any expense”causing eventually this dramatic depreciation.”

“A sufficient evidence is thata number of money exchangers closed business blaming ‘a party’ they did not name for the collapse. This party to our best knowledge and the knowledge of others, is none other than the Houthis,” he said.

He said that some of the individuals assigned by the Houthis to buy the dollars any expense have been arrested in Aden.

“To be realistic, this is not the only reason of the collapse though. There are other causes the most important of which is the suspension of oil and gas export.”

He also named several more causes that lead to the overall economic deterioration and in particular the Riyal collapse; the informal speculation in oil trade, the irregularities in the military and security setup in the provinces liberated from Houthis and the spike in assassinations and other destabilizing acts in these provinces.”
