A note from Father Noel……...

Alleluia Should Be Our Mantra If realtors have a special mantra when assessing the value of any piece of real estate it would be: location, location, location. Christians, specifically Catholics, also have a mantra for Easter: alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, which we will hear repeatedly during the Easter season. Etymologically, the world alleluia comes from two Hebrew words, hallel (praise) and ya (Yahweh or God). Taken together, it means praise God or praise the Lord. Why should alleluia be our mantra for Easter time? Three points come to mind, and let us look at each one in turn. First of all, we praise God for the good He has done for us in the history of salvation; namely in creation, in the libera-tion of the Israelites from Egypt, in guiding and comforting the Israelites during the exile, and in cleansing their impurities and hardness of heart. All of these marvelous deeds or mighty acts (Magnalia Dei) that God has done for us are proclaimed in the Easter Vigil liturgy. Second, we praise God for sending Jesus to save us from our sins. God, being all-powerful, could have saved us within a split second, a snap of the fingers, a blink of an eye or with easy magic tricks. God did not choose that path. In order to realize his plan of salvation, God prepared the people of Israel, and from this family line came the Messiah. Vatican II makes this clear, after the fall of our first parents, God did not abandon us. He promised to lift us up by promising redemption through the coming of Jesus, so as “to deliver us from the darkness of sin and death, and to raise us up to eternal life (DV 3).” Third, we praise God because through Christ’s resurrection, all of us are invited to be in communion with Him, to live with Him forever, and ultimately, to become sharers in His divine life (DV 2; GS 19). Through the reception of the three sacra-ments of initiation (baptism, confirmation and eucharist), catechumens are now partakers in this divine life. Similarly, through the renewal of baptismal promises, the divine life, which was lost by sin after baptism, is once again regenerated in us. To sum it up, we have all the reasons to be jubilant this Eastertide because God has done great things for us. He sent us Jesus to be our redeemer, and invites us to be with Him eternally. St. Augustine, in one of his Easter sermons, enunciated a brilliant statement which became legendary: “We are Easter people and alleluia should be our song.” In like manner, it is apt and proper to say that we are Easter people, and alleluia should be our mantra, because Jesus is alive and risen in our midst.

May you have a life-giving Easter celebration! Fr. Fr. Noel de Lira

Faith Formation...

Reflecting on God’s Word When you compare the apostles before and after Jesus’ death, you can see that not only did something special happen to Jesus at his resurrection, but a wonderful change took place in the apostles as well. Up until the death of Jesus, the apostles did not come off very well. When the chips were down, they ran. But after the Lord has risen and appeared to them, we get a very different picture. In the Acts of the Apostles Luke gives us the most detailed description of what went on after the Holy Spirit descended upon this little community praying in the upper room. The most obvious gift was courage, a word that has the same root as “heart.” They were given a new heart. The Holy Spirit breathed new life into them and gave them a heart passionately in love with Christ, on fire to preach the gospel. And so they went to the heart of their city, the temple, and there they preached and taught about Jesus, witnessing to him as the Messiah, the Holy and Righteous One, the Author of Life. They performed “many signs and wonders” (Acts 5:12), healing the sick and casting out unclean spirits. There they were arrested and taken to prison and beaten, only to return to the temple and do it all again, and be arrested again. Through all this they were joyful. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is remembered for saying that perhaps he would believe in our redeemer if we Christians looked a little more redeemed. Do you? —James A. Wallace, C.SS.R.
