WEEKLY BRIEF

A Message From Rabbi Adler As Moshe rebukes Am Yisrael for a variety

of transgressions over the course of 40

years in the desert he states ״ וידעת כי לא

G-D is not בצדקתך ה׳ אלוקיך נותן לך ״ ,

awarding you Eretz Yisrael on account of

your piety, כי עם קשה ערף אתה “ for you

are a stubborn nation and are unfaithful

to G-D over a long period of time.

Ultimately He awarded you Israel because

of my prayers.

I would like to suggest that Moshe did provide a reason for HKBH

awarding Israel based on a feature of Am Yisrael. The Gemara in Yevamot

( 121A ) states that Rabban Gamliel was traveling by boat, he witnessed

another boat capsized and he felt particularly bad because a prime talmid

was on the boat. It was Rabbi Akiva. When Rabban Gamliel returned to

his class he noticed Rabbi Akiva sitting and absorbing the lesson. He asked

him how did you survive? And he answered there was a board from my

sunken ship which I latched unto and every wave that was generated I

placed my head it it’s direction. When you have a stiff neck you can not

look behind you. You must keep looking forward. That is how Rabbi Akiva

survived, not by looking at his terrible calamity, but only looking forward

towards the future.

This is why we received Israel. Yes, we did not deserve it but we

were stiff necked and kept our faces looking forward toward Israel. Today

as well we find ourselves in a terrible challenge. Life has been drastically

altered, but let us be stiff necked and keep looking forward to another

Yamim Noraim when we hopefully hear HKBH say in full force “ויאמר ה ’
