    Culture

    Beijing is a metropolis in northern

    China and the capital of China. It is a

    major transportation hub, with dozens

    of railways, roads and motorways pass-

    ing through the city. Beijing is regarded

    as the political, educational, and cul-

    tural center of China.

    Beijing or Peking opera is a traditional

    form of Chinese theater well known

    throughout the nation. Commonly

    lauded as one of the highest achieve-

    ments of Chinese culture, Beijing opera

    is performed through a combination

    of song, spoken dialogue, and codied

    action sequences involving gestures,

    movement, ghting and acrobatics.

    Olympics

    Affectionately known as Birds Nest, it

    is situated in Olympic Green Village,

    Chaoyang District. It was designed

    as the main stadium of 2008 Beijing

    Olympic Games. The Olympic events

    of track and eld, football, gavelock,

    weight throw and discus were held

    there. Since October, 2008, after the

    Olympics ended, it has been opened as

    a tourist attraction.

    Beijing was awarded the Games over

    four competitors on July 13, 2001, hav-

    ing won an absolute majority of votes

    from members of the International

    Olympic Committee (IOC) after two

    rounds of voting.[2] The Government

    of the Peoples Republic of China pro-moted the Games and invested heav-

    ily in new facilities and transportation

    systems.

    Population
