    Etymology

    In his 1986 Indian Names in Michigan,Virgil Vogel explained when KalamazooCounty was formed on July 30, 1830, itwas allegedly named from the Indianname of the river, Ke-kanaamazoo,the boiling pot. In the 1821 Treatyof Chicago, the village of Match-e-benarh-she-wish, was described as at thehead of the Kekalamazoo river.

    Vogel suggests that the word may befrom the Miami, because of the Vogelcites Father Chrysostam Verwyst stat-ing the name Kalamazoo comes fromOjibwe as a corruption of Kikanam-soso meaning it smokes, or he istroubled with smoke and pronouncedkee-kah-nah-mo-zo or kee-kau-nau-mo-zo. Vogel also cites William R.

    Gerard as concurring in this opinion,that Kalamazoo is a slight alterationof older Ojibwe kikalmoza, meaninghe is inconvenienced by smoke.

    Western Michigan University (WMU)

    is a public university located in Ka-lamazoo, Michigan, United States.The university was established in1903 by Dwight B. Waldo, and as ofthe Fall 2010 semester, its enrollmentis 25,045. WMU has one of the larg-est aviation programs in the UnitedStates, and it is the site of the annualInternational Congress on MedievalStudies. The universitys athleticteams compete in Division I of theNCAA and are collectively known asthe Western Michigan Broncos. Theycompete in the Mid-American Confer-ence for most sports.

    Kalamazoo College, also known as KCollege or simply K, is a private lib-eral arts college in Kalamazoo, Michi-gan. Founded in 1833, the college isamong the 100 oldest in the country.Today, it produces more Peace Corpsvolunteers per capita than any otherU.S. academic institution.

    Kalamazoo has four local breweries and brewpubs that produce a variety of beer styles.Perhaps the best-known is Bells Brewery, established as the Kalamazoo Brewing Companyin 1985 by Larry Bell. The brewery has expanded from its original Kalamazoo location,which houses the Eccentric Cafe, to another brewery in nearby Comstock. Bells beer is sold

    by retailers in many parts of the country.

    A project of Kalamazoo Valley Community College, The Kalamazoo Animation Festival Inter-national (KAFI) encourages and educates animation artists, promotes Kalamazoos anima-tion industry, and provides community entertainment. In addition to a biannual festival,KAFI sponsors events such as lm screenings and workshops throughout the year.

    KAFIs rst festival drew 235 submissions and nearly 1,000 attendees in 2002. A second

    festival was held in 2003. Since then,an every-other-year schedule has beenadopted. The 2007 festival attractedmore than 500 entries from 37 coun-tries. In addition to an animated lm

    competition with $15,000 in prizesawarded, the festival features eventsfor students, artists, educators, lm-makers and the general public. PastKAFI award winners include BillPlympton, and Chris Landreth.
